The Role of Vitamin D on the Wound Healing Process: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D is an essential steroid hormone that consists of two forms, namely vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which can be obtained from exposure to sunlight, synthesis of vitamin D in the skin, food and dietary supplements. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in several countries including Indonesia is still high, while the role of vitamin D is very important including accelerating the wound healing process, increasing the immune system, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial. PURPOSE: This case report aims to find out the role of vitamin D in the wou

Stresses make microbe undergo programmed cell death: Mechanisms and opportunities.

In recent years, programmed cell death (PCD) has attracted the attention of many scholars as an active death process. PCD refers to an active extinction process that occurs after cells receive a certain signal or are stimulated by certain factors in order to maintain the stability of the internal environment. It is orchestrated by precise molecular circuitry. Initially, PCD was thought to exhibit altruistic behavior of "active devotion", a physiological characteristic of multicellular organisms. However, many evidences show that PCD also exists in microbe, and researchers in recent years have

Redundant neural circuits regulate olfactory integration.

Olfactory integration is important for survival in a natural habitat. However, how the nervous system processes signals of two odorants present simultaneously to generate a coherent behavioral response is poorly understood. Here, we characterize circuit basis for a form of olfactory integration in Caenorhabditis elegans. We find that the presence of a repulsive odorant, 2-nonanone, that signals threat strongly blocks the attraction of other odorants, such as isoamyl alcohol (IAA) or benzaldehyde, that signal food. Using a forward genetic screen, we found that genes known to regulate the struct

Community Group Model Building as a Method for Engaging Participants and Mobilising Action in Public Health.

Group model building (GMB) is a qualitative method aimed at engaging stakeholders to collectively consider the causes of complex problems. Tackling inequities in community nutrition is one such complex problem, as the causes are driven by a variety of interactions between individual factors, social structures, local environments and the global food system. This methods paper describes a GMB process that utilises three system mapping tools in a study with members of a multicultural, low-income community to explore declining fruit and vegetable intake in children. The tools were: 1) graphs over

Enantioselective fate of dinotefuran from tomato cultivation to home canning for refining dietary exposure.

Understanding the enantioselective fate of chiral neonicotinoid dinotefuran is of vital importance for accurate dietary exposure assessment and food safety regulation. The study investigated the enantioselectivity in respect to dissipation, metabolism, and removal, of dinotefuran from tomato cultivation to tomato paste processing. The chiral analytical method of dinotefuran, UF and DN was developed in tomato using ultrahigh performance supercritical fluid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Under greenhouse cultivation R-dinotefuran preferentially degraded (T1/2, 9.1-12.6 days), resulting

Molecular basis of resistance to organophosphate insecticides in the New World screw-worm fly.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of insecticide resistance is a fast-paced example of the evolutionary process of natural selection. In this study, we investigated the molecular basis of resistance in the myiasis-causing fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to dimethyl-organophosphate (OP) insecticides. METHODS: By sequencing the RNA from surviving larvae treated with dimethyl-OP (resistant condition) and non-treated larvae (control condition), we identified genes displaying condition-specific polymorphisms, as well as those differentially expressed. RESULTS: Both analyses revealed

The occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes is associated with built environment microbiota in three tree fruit processing facilities.

BACKGROUND: Multistate foodborne disease outbreaks and recalls of apples and apple products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes demonstrate the need for improved pathogen control in the apple supply chain. Apple processing facilities have been identified in the past as potential sources of persisting L. monocytogenes contamination. In this study, we sought to understand the composition of microbiota in built apple and other tree fruit processing environments and its association with the occurrence of the foodborne pathogen L. monocytogenes. RESULTS: Analysis of 117 samples collected from

Proteomic Analysis of the Downstream Signaling Network of PARP1.

Poly-ADP-ribosylation (PARylation) is a protein posttranslational modification (PTM) that is critically involved in many biological processes that are linked to cell stress responses. It is catalyzed by a class of enzymes known as poly-ADP-ribose polymerases (PARPs). In particular, PARP1 is a nuclear protein that is activated upon sensing nicked DNA. Once activated, PARP1 is responsible for the synthesis of a large number of PARylated proteins and initiation of the DNA damage response mechanisms. This observation provided the rationale for developing PARP1 inhibitors for the treatment of human

Catalytic amino acid production from biomass-derived intermediates.

Amino acids are the building blocks for protein biosynthesis and find use in myriad industrial applications including in food for humans, in animal feed, and as precursors for bio-based plastics, among others. However, the development of efficient chemical methods to convert abundant and renewable feedstocks into amino acids has been largely unsuccessful to date. To that end, here we report a heterogeneous catalyst that directly transforms lignocellulosic biomass-derived α-hydroxyl acids into α-amino acids, including alanine, leucine, valine, aspartic acid, and phenylalanine in high yields. Th

In Vivo Mercury Demethylation in a Marine Fish (Acanthopagrus schlegeli).

Mercury (Hg) in fish has attracted public attention for decades, and methylmercury (MeHg) is the predominant form in fish. However, the in vivo MeHg demethylation and its influence on Hg level in fish have not been well-addressed. The present study investigated the in vivo demethylation process in a marine fish (black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli) under dietary MeHg exposure and depuration and quantified the biotransformation and interorgan transportation of MeHg by developing a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model. After exposure, we observed a 2-fold increase of the whole-

The Use of Stilbene Scaffold in Medicinal Chemistry and Multi- Target Drug Design.

The stilbene scaffold is a basic element for a number of biologically active natural and synthetic compounds, and it is considered as a privileged structure. Stilbenes exemplified by resveratrol, combretastatin A-4 and pterostilbene are of significant interest for drug research and development because of their potential in therapeutic and preventive application. Resveratrol, present in grapes and other food products, plays a role in the prevention of several human pathological processes and has been suggested as an anticancer agent. Moreover, recent evidence has revealed its potential effect o

Roles of "Wanting" and "Liking" in Motivating Behavior: Gambling, Food, and Drug Addictions.

The motivation to seek out and consume rewards has evolutionarily been driven by the urge to fulfill physiological needs. However in a modern society dominated more by plenty than scarcity, we tend to think of motivation as fueled by the search for pleasure. Here, we argue that two separate but interconnected subcortical and unconscious processes direct motivation: "wanting" and "liking." These two psychological and neuronal processes and their related brain structures typically work together, but can become dissociated, particularly in cases of addiction. In drug addiction, for example, repea

Nanofiltration and sensing of picomolar chemical residues in aqueous solution using an optical porous resonator in a microelectrofluidic channel.

For the first time the use of a porous microresonator placed in a microelectrofluidic system for integrated functions of nanofiltration and sensing of small biomolecules and chemical analytes in extremely dilute solution was proposed and investigated. As an example, aminoglycosides in drug residues in food and livestock products were considered as the trace chemical analyte. The filtration process of the charged analyte in aqueous solution driven by an applied electrical field and the accompanying optical whispering-gallery modes in the resonator are modeled. The dynamic process of adsorption

Leaf volatile emissions of Betula pendula during autumn coloration and leaf fall.

Deciduous trees remobilize the nitrogen in leaves during the process of autumn coloration, thus providing a high quality food source for aphids preparing to lay over-wintering eggs. It has been suggested that aphids may use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to: (a) select leaves where nutrient remobilization has started and induced defenses are reduced; and (b) detect the time of leaf abscission. We analyzed VOCs emitted by the foliage of Betula pendula Roth. during autumn coloration and from leaf litter just after leaf fall. We tested the hypothesis that costly, photosynthesis-related terpene

Inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12 exposed to pressures in excess of 300 MPa in a high-pressure homogenizer.

Homogenization is used widely in the dairy industry to improve product stability and quality. High-pressure homogenization (HPH) of fluid foods up to pressures of 300 MPa has demonstrated excellent potential for microbial inactivation. Microbial inactivation can be enhanced during HPH with the inclusion of antimicrobial compounds. Escherichia coli K-12 cells, grown statically or in chemostat, were exposed to HPH processing pressures of 50 to 350 MPa in the absence or presence of the antimicrobial nisin. Valve temperature was regulated by a water bath and pressure, and temperature data were rec

Trichinae certification in the United States pork industry.

Control of Trichinella infection in U.S. pork has traditionally been accomplished by inspection of individual carcasses at slaughter or by post-slaughter processing to inactivate parasites. We propose that an alternative to individual carcass testing or processing can be used when pigs are raised in production systems where risk of exposure to Trichinella spiralis has been mitigated. Declines in prevalence of this parasite in U.S. domestic swine during the last 30 years, coupled with improvements in pork production systems, now allow Trichinella control to be shifted to the farm through implem

Consumer knowledge and practices to pork safety in two Taenia solium cysticercosis endemic districts in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Globally, Taenia solium can cause cysticercosis in humans (including neurocysticercosis) and in pigs through ingestion of eggs and taeniasis in humans through ingestion of raw/undercooked pork contaminated with mature cysts. It is now recognised globally as one of the most prevalent food-borne parasitic diseases. The majority of cases have been reported in developing countries where consumption of food produced under unhygienic conditions is prevalent, exacerbated by lack of food safety education. The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and practices of consumers towar

[Large dams, health and nutrition in Africa: beyond the controversy].

The population in sub-Saharan Africa is growing faster than increases in food production, resulting in a net decrease in food production per capita. The Food and Agriculture Organization has stated that there is a "risk of widespread hunger" which could be prevented by "effective planning of water resources". However, the potential effects of such schemes on the human population are often inadequately assessed and the effect of large dams on human health is not clear. The potential risk to human health of water resources was emphasized a few years ago but no effective preventive programs were
