In recent years the still relatively new short-acting benzodiazepine remimazolam has been approved and clinically implemented in several countries and regions. Remimazolam is also now approved in the EU and the market launch in Germany is expected in the not too distant future. This is therefore a good point in time to summarize the current evidence for various areas of application, including general anesthesia, sedation and intensive care medicine as well as different dosing schemes.

In light of the recent Ebola virus outbreak, it has to be realized that besides medical treatment, precise algorithms for the management of complicating microbial infections are mandatory for Ebola virus disease (EVD) patients. While the necessity of such diagnostics is apparent, practical details are much less clear. Our approach, established during the treatment of an EVD patient at the University Hospital in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, provides a roadmap for reliable and safe on-site microbiological testing.

5% of all multiple myelomas manifest as solitary plasmocytomas. The multiple myeloma is the most frequent malignant transformation of the haematopoetic system, with an incidence of 2:100,000 per year. 1% of all solitary plasmocytomas are found in the extremities, accounting for less than one case per year in Germany. In this article we present the case of a fifty year old patient with a solitary plasmocytoma of the shoulder region and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involved.

Tick-transmitted borreliosis is by no means a rare infectious disease. It is found especially in southern parts of Germany. Eyes are seldom affected. The disease can lead to nerve palsy of the eye muscles. One case of panophthalmitis and one of optic disk edema have been described. The authors found a bilateral palsy of the abducens nerve in one patient with tick-transmitted borreliosis. Motility normalized under therapy with highly-dosed penicillin.

The morphologic aspect of abdominal tuberculosis are evaluated by C.T. The necrotising tuberculosis of the genitourinary tract presents course cystic lesions of fluid density. Similar morphologic criteria are seen in ileocecal tuberculosis. The peritoneal tuberculosis is characterized by large soft tissue masses of a high density which can be found in nearly all areas of the abdomen. The increased morbidity of tuberculosis in people from foreign countries living in the Federal Republic of Germany is pointed out.

In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), a tightly organised vaccination system was established in the 1950s and 1960s. In this context, the medical effort to stop the spread of infectious diseases in the post-war period was coupled with the political will to present itself as a responsible preventive state.
