Urethral support in female urinary continence part 1: dynamic measurements of urethral shape and motion.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urethral closure mechanism dysfunction in female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is poorly understood. We aimed to quantify these mechanisms through changes in urethral shape and position during squeeze (voluntary closure) and Valsalva (passive closure) via endovaginal ultrasound in women with varying SUI severity. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 76 women who presented to our tertiary center for urodynamic testing as preoperative assessment were recruited. Urodynamics were performed according to International Continence Society criteria. Urethral pres

Non-union and use of proton pump inhibitors in the treatment of femoral and tibial shaft fractures: a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most frequently used drugs worldwide. Previous research has shown that they could increase the risk of fracture and interfere with the fracture healing process. In this study, we analyzed the effect of PPIs on the risk of fracture non-union in patients with femoral and tibial shaft fractures. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted at our institution, including a total of 254 patients who underwent fixation surgery for a femoral or tibial shaft fracture between January 2012 and December 2017. We defined cases as patients who experie

Chronic arsenic exposure lowered sperm motility via impairing ultra-microstructure and key proteins expressions of sperm acrosome and flagellum formation during spermiogenesis in male mice.

Arsenic (As) poisoning and its potential reproductive functional lesions are a global environmental concern. Recent studies shown that spermiogenesis tends to be a major target process in arsenic-induced male infertility, however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully illuminated. In the present study, 32 fertility related indices including sperm motility, dynamic acrosome formation and sperm flagellum during spermiogenesis in testes were evaluated in adult male mice treated with 0, 0.2, 2, and 20 ppm As2O3 via drinking water for 180 consecutive days. The results showed that out of 32 indice

Postural changes in optic nerve and optic nerve sheath diameters in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and spontaneous intracranial hypotension: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system. Approximately 30% of patients experience orthostatic headaches. Orthostatic headaches also are a hallmark symptom in spontaneous intracranial hypotension. While the cause of orthostatic headaches in spontaneous intracranial hypotension can be linked to the cerebrospinal fluid loss at the spinal level and consecutively reduced intracranial pressure in the upright position, the cause of orthostatic headaches in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome still remains unknown. The present study exa

Transacylation in Ferrocenoyl-Purines. NMR and Computational Study of the Isomerization Mechanism.

In the reaction of purines with ferrocenoyl chloride in dimethylformamide (DMF), a regioselective acylation occurred. The two products have been isolated and, according to detailed NMR analysis, identified as N7- and N9-ferrocenoylated isomers. In a more polar solvent, for example, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), the two isomers interconvert to each other. The N7/N9 isomerization was followed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, until dynamic equilibrium was reached. Both kinetics and thermodynamics of the transacylation process are governed by a C6-substituent on the purine ring (R = NH2, Me, NHBz, OBz). The

Dynamic Changes in Helicobacter pylori Status Following Gastric Cancer Surgery.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori eradication is recommended in patients with early gastric cancer. However, the possibility of spontaneous regression raises a question for clinicians about the need for "retesting" postoperative H. pylori status. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative gastrectomy at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and had a positive H. pylori status without eradication therapy at the time of gastric cancer diagnosis were prospectively enrolled in this study. H. pylori status and atrophic gastritis (AG) and intestinal metaplasia (IM) histologic status were asse

Differentiating progress in a clinical group of fibromyalgia patients during and following a multicomponent treatment program.

OBJECTIVE: Treatments including multiple nonpharmacological components have beneficial effects on the key symptoms of fibromyalgia, although effects are limited and often do not persist. In this study, we examined different patterns of clinical progress and the dynamic interplay between predictors and outcomes over time. METHODS: Fibromyalgia patients (N=153; 135 women) followed a multidisciplinary group program spanning 12weeks, aimed at "regaining control over daily functioning". Anxiety, depression, pain coping and kinesiophobia were used as predictor variables. Outcome variables were pain

Glucose derivatives substitution and cyclic peptide diameter effects on the stability of the self-assembled cyclic peptide nanotubes; a joint QM/MD study.

Dynamical behavior and the stability of eighteen nanostructures composed of cyclic peptide (CP) with the general structure of the cyclo(CO(CH2)n=4, 6, 10COCyst), in the gas phase, water and chloroform were investigated during 50ns molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. CP dimers and cyclic peptide nanotubes (CPNTs) are more stable in chloroform than water and this stability is reversely correlated with the ring size of the CP units. Also the effect of glucose derivatives substitution, d-glucose (S1) and N-methyl-d-glucamine (S2), on the stability and other physicochemical properties of the CP dim

Dynamic Analysis of the Conditional Oscillator Underlying Slow Waves in Thalamocortical Neurons.

During non-REM sleep the EEG shows characteristics waves that are generated by the dynamic interactions between cortical and thalamic oscillators. In thalamic neurons, low-threshold T-type Ca(2+) channels play a pivotal role in almost every type of neuronal oscillations, including slow (< 1 Hz) waves, sleep spindles and delta waves. The transient opening of T channels gives rise to the low threshold spikes (LTSs), and associated high frequency bursts of action potentials, that are characteristically present during sleep spindles and delta waves, whereas the persistent opening of a small fracti

Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of a Mortality Event among Central African Great Apes.

In 2006-2007 we observed an unusual mortality event among apes in northern Republic of Congo that, although not diagnostically confirmed, we believe to have been a disease outbreak. In 2007-2011 we conducted ape nest surveys in the region, recording 11,835 G. g. gorilla nests (2,262 groups) and 5,548 P. t. troglodytes nests (2,139 groups). We developed a statistical model to determine likely points of origin of the outbreak to help identify variables associated with disease emergence and spread. We modeled disease spread across the study area, using suitable habitat conditions for apes as prox

The cross-sectional area of the gluteus maximus muscle varies according to habitual exercise loading: Implications for activity-related and evolutionary studies.

Greater size of the gluteus maximus muscle in humans compared to non-human primates has been considered an indication of its function in bipedal posture and gait, especially running capabilities. Our aim was to find out how the size of the gluteus maximus muscle varies according to sports while controlling for variation in muscle strength and body weight. Data on gluteus maximus muscle cross-sectional area (MCA) were acquired from magnetic resonance images of the hip region of female athletes (N=91), and physically active controls (N=20). Dynamic muscle force was measured as counter movement j

Biochemical and histopathological alterations in Biomphalaria glabrata due to co-infection by Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Echinostoma paraensei.

The effect of concurrent infection by Echinostoma paraensei and Angiostrongylus cantonensis on the activity of the enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and the concentration of total proteins, uric acid and urea in the hemolymph of Biomphalaria glabrata were investigated. Additionally, histopathological studies were conducted to better understand the dynamics of ontogenic development of both helminths in the host and the possible biochemical effects. Co-infections by helminths and other parasites often occur due to the wide distribution of helminths and t

Dynamic changes of XPA, XPC, XPF, XPG and ERCC1 protein expression and their correlations with levels of DNA damage in human bronchial epithelia cells exposed to benzo[a]pyrene.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a ubiquitously distributed environmental pollutant known to cause DNA damage, which may be repaired through nucleotide excision repair (NER). However, little is known about dynamic changes in levels of DNA damage and their correlations with levels of NER proteins in cells exposed to BaP. In a series of experiments using the human bronchial epithelia cells (16HBE) exposed to different concentrations of BaP for different times, we measured dynamic changes in levels of DNA damage and expression of NER subunit xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) groups A, C, F, G (XPA, XPC, XPF, XPG

Spontaneous breathing or mechanical ventilation alters lung compliance and tissue association of exogenous surfactant in preterm newborn rabbits.

In preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome, surfactant administration followed by immediate extubation to spontaneous breathing with nasal continuous positive airway pressure reduces the need for mechanical ventilation. With this treatment approach, repeated doses of surfactant are rarely indicated. We used a rabbit model to test the hypothesis that exogenous surfactant therapy followed by spontaneous breathing results in a more sustained initial treatment response compared with treatment followed by mechanical ventilation. Preterm rabbits (gestational age 28.5 d) were treated with

Detection and localization of proteinuria by dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging using MS325.

After renal transplantation, persistent glomerular disease affecting the native kidneys typically causes albuminuria, at least for a period of time, making it difficult to determine in a noninvasive fashion whether proteinuria originates in the native kidneys or the renal allograft. To address this problem, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using gadolinium (Gd)-based albumin-bound blood pool contrast agent (MS325) to localize proteinuria was investigated. Glomerular proteinuria was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by intravenous injection of puromycin aminonucleoside (P
