Children's selective trust in technological informants: A meta-analysis.

Children increasingly encounter technology as a source of information, yet evidence of whether they trust technological informants more or less than human informants is mixed. The present meta-analysis synthesizes 20 studies (27 experiments; N = 8,772; ages 3-10 years) to examine children's selective trust in technological versus human informants and to identify theoretically motivated moderators of this trust. Across studies, there was no overall preference for technological or human informants. However, substantial heterogeneity emerged. Multivariate metaregression revealed four significant

N4-acetylcytidine modification of LncRNA GFOD1-AS1 promotes high glucose-induced dysfunction in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells through stabilization of DNMT1 protein.

Emerging evidence supports that angiogenesis is essential for the wound healing of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), and high glucose (HG)-induced dysfunction of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells is a key factor that hinders angiogenesis. However, the underlying mechanisms by which HG leads to the dysfunction of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells has not been fully elucidated. In the present investigation, we discovered a significant upregulation of the long non-coding RNA GFOD1-AS1(GFOD1-AS1) in the ulcer margin samples of patients with DFU and the HG-induced dysfunction model o

A Nasal Aerodynamics Perspective of Retronasal Olfaction: Rodents vs. Humans.

INTRODUCTION: Odor perception can be achieved through ortho or retronasal routes, with the latter being an important component of flavor perception. There are significant olfactory differences that exist between rats and humans and by understanding the role of structural differences, further insight can be gained into the mechanism of odorant perception via ortho or retronasal routes. METHODS: 3D human and rat (Sprague Dawley) computational models were used to investigate nasal anatomy impact on ortho vs. retronasal odorant transport to the olfactory epithelium. The nasal pharynx region was m

Human ex vivo spinal cord slice culture as a useful model of neural development, lesion, and allogeneic neural cell therapy.

BACKGROUND: There are multiple promising treatment strategies for central nervous system trauma and disease. However, to develop clinically potent and safe treatments, models of human-specific conditions are needed to complement in vitro and in vivo animal model-based studies. METHODS: We established human brain stem and spinal cord (cross- and longitudinal sections) organotypic cultures (hOCs) from first trimester tissues after informed consent by donor and ethical approval by the Regional Human Ethics Committee, Stockholm (lately referred to as Swedish Ethical Review Authority), and The Nat

Retroviral insertional mutagenesis in telomerase-immortalized hepatocytes identifies RIPK4 as novel tumor suppressor in human hepatocarcinogenesis.

Carcinogenesis is a multistep process involving alterations in various cellular pathways. The critical genetic events driving the evolution of primary liver cancer, specifically hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), are still poorly understood. However, telomere stabilization is acknowledged as prerequisite for cancer progression in humans. In this project, human fetal hepatocytes were utilized as a cell culture model for untransformed, proliferating human liver cells, with telomerase activation as first oncogenic hit. To elucidate critical downstream genetic events driving furthe

Human health risk associated with brominated flame-retardants (BFRs).

The purposes of this review are to assess the human exposure and human and experimental evidence for adverse effects of brominated flame-retardants (BFRs) with specific focus on intake from seafood. The leakage of BFRs from consumer products leads to exposure of humans from fetal life to adulthood. Fish and fish products contain the highest levels of BFRs and dominate the dietary intake of frequent fish eaters in Europe, while meat, followed by seafood and dairy products accounted for the highest US dietary intake. House dust is also reported as an important source of exposure for children as

Completely humanizing prolactin rescues infertility in prolactin knockout mice and leads to human prolactin expression in extrapituitary mouse tissues.

A variety of fundamental differences have evolved in the physiology of the human and rodent prolactin (PRL) systems. The PRL gene in humans and other primates contains an alternative promoter, 5.8 kbp upstream of the pituitary transcription start site, which drives expression of PRL in "extrapituitary" tissues, where PRL is believed to exert local, or paracrine, actions. Several of these extrapituitary PRL tissues serve a reproductive function (eg, mammary gland, decidua, prostate, etc), consistent with the hypothesis that local PRL production may be involved in, and required for, normal repro

Macaque models of human infectious disease.

Macaques have served as models for more than 70 human infectious diseases of diverse etiologies, including a multitude of agents-bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, prions. The remarkable diversity of human infectious diseases that have been modeled in the macaque includes global, childhood, and tropical diseases as well as newly emergent, sexually transmitted, oncogenic, degenerative neurologic, potential bioterrorism, and miscellaneous other diseases. Historically, macaques played a major role in establishing the etiology of yellow fever, polio, and prion diseases. With rare exceptions (Cha

Agonist-dependent consequences of proline to alanine substitution in the transmembrane helices of the calcitonin receptor.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transmembrane proline (P) residues in family A G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) form functionally important kinks in their helices. These residues are little studied in family B GPCRs but experiments with the VPAC1 receptor and calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CL) show parallels with family A receptors. We sought to determine the function of these residues in the insert negative form of the human calcitonin receptor, a close relative of CL. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Proline residues within the transmembrane domains of the calcitonin receptor (P246, P249, P280, P326,

Effects of an embodied micro-film intervention on ethical sensitivity, compassion, and ethical decision-making in nursing students: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Bridging the "knowing-doing gap" remains a central challenge in nursing ethics education. Traditional didactic methods often position students as disembodied observers, limiting the transformation of ethical knowledge into practical competence. OBJECTIVE: To address the "knowing-doing gap" in ethics education, this study aimed to develop and evaluate an innovative micro-film intervention, guided by embodied cognition theory, and to assess its impact on key components of nursing ethical competence. DESIGN: A mixed methods study employing a two-arm cluster-assigned quasi-experiment

ECSIT is a critical limiting factor for cardiac function.

Evolutionarily conserved signaling intermediate in Toll pathways (ECSIT) is a protein with roles in early development, activation of the transcription factor NF-κB, and production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) that facilitates clearance of intracellular bacteria like Salmonella. ECSIT is also an important assembly factor for mitochondrial complex I. Unlike the murine form of Ecsit (mEcsit), we demonstrate here that human ECSIT (hECSIT) is highly labile. To explore whether the instability of hECSIT affects functions previously ascribed to its murine counterpart, we created a p

Distribution of the regulatory peptide alarin in the eye of various species.

Alarin is a recently discovered regulatory peptide with vasoconstrictive properties in murine skin. Control of vasoconstriction/-relaxation is essential for ocular blood flow and hence the eye's homeostasis, and regulatory peptides are involved in regulation of ocular blood flow. Here we describe the existence and distribution of alarin in the eye of human and potential experimental animals (rat, mouse). Eyes of rat, mouse, and human were prepared for immunohistochemistry against murine and human alarin, respectively. Additionally, double staining experiments for alarin and CD31 were performed

Brain transplantation of immortalized human neural stem cells promotes functional recovery in mouse intracerebral hemorrhage stroke model.

We have generated stable, immortalized cell lines of human NSCs from primary human fetal telencephalon cultures via a retroviral vector encoding v-myc. HB1.F3, one of the human NSC lines, expresses a normal human karyotype of 46, XX, and nestin, a cell type-specific marker for NSCs. F3 has the ability to proliferate continuously and differentiate into cells of neuronal and glial lineage. The HB1.F3 human NSC line was used for cell therapy in a mouse model of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) stroke. Experimental ICH was induced in adult mice by intrastriatal administration of bacterial collagenas

Integrating physical activity into the workplace: opportunities for enhancing employee health.

INTRODUCTION: Human health is closely linked to physical, social, and ecological environments. Since people spend a large portion of their time at work, this setting plays a key role in well-being. Desk workers often remain sedentary for 8-10 h daily, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and pain. The UP150 office concept aims to promote movement during working hours, supporting the mind-body connection, improving relationships, and enhancing both health and work quality. This study builds on previous research by evaluating the effects of the UP150 concept after 2 years of implemen

Association Between Rotarod Tests and Myelin Basic Protein in the Confirmation of the Cuprizone-Induced Rat Multiple Sclerosis Model and the Relationship of These Parameters with Dietary Zinc Status.

INTRODUCTION: Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is widely used for studies of human inflammatory demyelinating diseases. The cuprizone model is one of the most frequently used. The cuprizone model is a toxic demyelination model. The most significant challenge in this experimental model is demonstrating the development of MS in animals with experimental evidence. Two tests stand out in demonstrating the development of disease in cuprizone-induced rat MS models. The first is the Rotarod test. The Rotarod test is an experimental test that has become frequently used in recent years i

Addressing the liver progenitor cell response and hepatic oxidative stress in experimental non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis using amniotic epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease globally and in its inflammatory form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, patient education and lifestyle changes are the major tools to prevent the continued progression of NASH. Emerging therapies in NASH target known pathological processes involved in the progression of the disease including inflammation, fibrosis, oxidative stress and hepatocyte apoptosis. Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) were previously shown to be beneficial in

The role of cervical muscles in mitigating concussion.

OBJECTIVES: Increased neck strength has been hypothesized to lower sports related concussion risk, but lacks experimental evidence. The goal is to investigate the role cervical muscle strength plays in blunt impact head kinematics and the biofidelity of common experimental neck conditions. We hypothesize head kinematics do not vary with neck activation due to low short term human head-to-neck coupling; because of the lack of coupling, free-head experimental conditions have higher biofidelity than Hybrid III necks. METHODS: Impacts were modeled using the Duke University Head and Neck Model. Fo

Transplantation of genetically modified hepatocytes after liver preconditioning in Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocyte transplantation is a potentially less invasive alternative to liver transplantation for treating inherited metabolic liver diseases. We developed an autotransplantation protocol of ex vivo genetically modified hepatocytes combining lentiviral transduction and transplantation after liver preconditioning by partial portal vein embolization. We investigated the metabolic efficiency of this approach in Watanabe rabbits, animal model of familial hypercholesterolemia. METHODS: Our autotransplantation experimental protocol was used in two groups of rabbits (n = 10), experiment
