Individual-specific DNA fingerprints of crocodilians were obtained by the use of Bkm-2(8) probe. Pedigree analyses of Crocodylus palustris, C. porosus and Caiman crocodilus revealed that the multiple bands (22-23 bands with Aludigest) thus obtained were inherited stably in a Mendelian fashion. Cocaine use and behavioral stress elicit variable cardiovascular responses in individuals. In the present study, we examined the effects of cocaine or stress on arterial pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output in conscious rats. Rats were instrumented for determination of ascending aortic blood flow as an index of cardiac output using pulsed Doppler flow-metry. A 59-year-old man was found to have typical Hailey-Hailey disease of the back, neck and axillae. In addition, he had fine white scaling in the scalp and postauricular areas. Despite the clinical appearance of seborrhoeic dermatitis, a biopsy of his scalp showed prominent suprabasal epidermal separation with acantholysis. We propose that in a genetically predisposed individual, Hailey-Hailey disease can assume atypical and non-specific appearances.

Spontaneous inhibitors of factor VIII (FVIII) are pathogenic IgG autoantibodies of restricted isotypic heterogeneity found in the plasma of patients presenting with bleeding episodes and low levels of FVIII. We now report the presence of a natural FVIII-neutralizing activity in 85 of 500 plasma samples (17%) from healthy donors. A patient with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome was clinically treated several times over a period of 9 months. During at least 3 weeks each time, the patient received prednisone, then underwent 9 plasmaphereses, and was given guanidine-hydrochloride (HCl) and 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP). Recent reports have indicated the possibility that HIV-2 has been introduced into groups at risk for AIDS in Brazil. We studied sera collected in 1987 and 1988 from 1,821 at-risk individuals from diverse regions in Brazil. We analysed 127 specimens of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 118 HIV-1-infected individuals at different stages of infection. Intrathecal antibody synthesis was evident in 23 samples tested and was more frequently directed against HIV than against rubella virus, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus or cytomegalovirus. An incidence of glucose tolerance disorders was investigated in the group of 47 employees of the viscose fibres of the mean duration of exposition exceeding 20 years.
