Neonatal Mortality in Hospitalized Chinese Population: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: In this meta-analysis, we aim to investigate the neonatal mortality in hospitalized Chinese population in the recent 20 years in China, which may provide basis for decreasing the neonatal mortality. METHODS: The merged mortality was estimated based on the random effect model, and subgroup analysis was performed for the gender, publication year, gestational age, and birth weight. Sensitivity analysis was utilized to evaluate the effects of research type and research quality on the effects. RESULTS: The neonatal mortality in eastern China was lower than that of the central and weste

Spectrum of Congenital Malformations in Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe: A Ten-Year Review.

BACKGROUND: Congenital malformations remain a leading cause of death in the neonatal period. The incidences of Congenital Malformations have been reported in other parts of Nigeria but there is paucity of data on Congenital Malformations in North-Eastern Nigeria. This review aims to determine the prevalence and pattern of Congenital Malformations in Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Northeastern Nigeria. METHODS: A retrospective review of records of all patients admitted into the Special Care Baby Unit of Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe who had a diagnosis of Congenital Malformations over a pe

Effect of hospital size and on-call arrangements on intrapartum and early neonatal mortality among low-risk newborns in Finland.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of delivery unit size and on-call staffing in the performance of low-risk deliveries in Finland. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based study of hospital size and level based on Medical Birth Register data. Population was all hospital births in Finland in 2005-2009. Inclusion criteria were singleton births (birth weight 2500g or more) without major congenital anomalies or birth defects. Additionally, only intrapartum stillbirths were included. Birthweights and maternal background characteristics were adjusted for by logistic regression. Main outcome measures wer

Estimation of daily risk of neonatal death, including the day of birth, in 186 countries in 2013: a vital-registration and modelling-based study.

BACKGROUND: The days immediately after birth are the most risky for human survival, yet neonatal mortality risks are generally not reported by day. Early neonatal deaths are sometimes under-reported or might be misclassified by day of death or as stillbirths. We modelled daily neonatal mortality risk and estimated the proportion of deaths on the day of birth and in week 1 for 186 countries in 2013. METHODS: We reviewed data from vital registration (VR) and demographic and health surveys for information on the timing of neonatal deaths. For countries with high-quality VR we used the data as re

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa incidence and survival: 5-year experience of the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (DebRA) nurse educator, 2007 to 2011.

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) is a particularly devastating type of epidermolysis bullosa, especially in the newborn period. Data a … y higher than previously estimated (2.04 per million). There was a high prevalence of morbidity and infant mortality of at least 73%, as 52 of the 71 cases proved fatal by June 2012. These data emphasize the need for future research to develop treatment and ultimately a cure for this disorder.

[New insights into the support of children with Down syndrome].

The prevalence of Down syndrome (DS) in the Netherlands is 14/10,000 live births; this is almost 1.5 times higher than during the 1980s and 90 s. In the Netherlands the uptake of prenatal screening is lower than in the rest of Europe and the percentage of pregnant women > 36 years has increased. The early diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart abnormalities means that mortality among DS children has fallen. Although their life expectancy has increased greatly, other comorbidities have come to the fore. Wheezing is reported in 1/3 of the children with DS; it seems unrelated to asthma and a

[Evolution of neonatal mortality at the Blida University Teaching Hospital (Algeria) between 1999 and 2006].

Within the framework of the active information system set up by the department of epidemiology on hospital mortality at the Blida (Algeria) University Teaching Hospital (CHU), a study was carried out to assess the importance and evolution of neonatal mortality recorded at the CHU in the last eight years (1999-2006) as well as the causes of neonatal death. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) was used to encode the nature of the causal disease. Using the software EpiInfo™ in its sixth version performed data entry, monitoring and analysis. On the whole, 2,167 neonatal deaths were

[Neonatal mortality and morbidity in gestational age shorter than 30 weeks for babies treated primarily in a central hospital. Follow-up studies of an unselected, consecutive patient group].

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the mortality and morbidity of very premature babies treated at a Danish county hospital in the mid-1990s. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The 62 survivors of 70 consecutive babies born in 1993-1997 were given a neuropaediatric follow-up examination at a corrected mean age of 49 (22-69) months. The mean gestational age was 27 (24-29) weeks and the mean birth weight was 1012 (550-1374) g. RESULTS: Eight babies (11%) died within 28 days of birth. Four (6%) had an intracerebral haemorrhage, grade 3-4; four (6%) had retinopathy of prematurity; and three (4%) ha

Survival and developmental disability in infants with birth weights of 501 to 800 grams, born between 1979 and 1994.

OBJECTIVE: Because the survival rate has increased for extremely low birth weight neonates, many have raised the concern that the rate of developmental disability among survivors will also increase. To address this concern, we analyzed changes over time in survival and major neurosensory impairment in a sample of extremely low birth weight infants born between July 1, 1979, and June 30, 1994. METHODS: The study sample included 513 infants with birth weights of 501 to 800 g who were cared for in either of the two neonatal intensive care units that serve a 17-county region in northwest North Ca

Lessons to be learnt from a perinatal audit.

OBJECTIVE: to analyse all perinatal deaths at National Women's Hospital, Auckland, in a two year period, in order to identify areas in which changes could be made to improve the outcome for future pregnancies. METHODS: an audit was performed of all perinatal deaths at National Women's Hospital, Auckland, in 1989 and 1990. All deaths were classified according to the primary obstetric factor which initiated the sequence of events leading to the death. The events surrounding each death were examined for the presence of avoidable factors. RESULTS: there were 293 deaths after 20 weeks gestation,

Risk determinants of perinatal mortality in a Swedish county, 1980-1984.

A retrospective case-referent study was performed to analyse risk factors of perinatal mortality. Overweight defined by body mass index, smoking greater than 10 cigs/day, infertility, earlier birth weight, earlier perinatal death were significant risk determinants of the obstetric history. Overweight and smoking, measured by the etiologic fractions, had the greatest impact on perinatal mortality. Significant risk factors of the present pregnancy were low weight gain, pre-eclampsia, cervical incompetence, and late hemorrhage. Intra-uterine growth retardation had the highest etiologic fraction.

Antenatal origin of neurologic damage in newborn infants. I. Preterm infants.

Currently, the diagnosis of white matter necrosis may be performed with echoencephalography when cysts are observed in the white matter adjacent to the lateral ventricles. One hundred twenty-seven infants with a gestational age less than 36 weeks (mean [+/- SE] gestational age = 31 +/- 3.2 weeks) were studied in the neonatal period with echoencephalography to determine the incidence of white matter necrosis and the perinatal variables associated with this complication. Twenty-three infants (18.3%) had white matter necrosis. Thirteen (10.3%) had cysts by day 3 (11 on day 1), indicating that the

Assessing sex differences in neonatal survival: a study of discordant twins.

We identified 1699 liveborn twin pairs, discordant for sex. In this study, which essentially controls for gestational age, race, and maternal risk factors among males and females, there was no significant sex difference (108 male deaths and 103 female deaths) in neonatal mortality (p greater than 0.50). However, there was a sex difference in intrauterine growth, since 53% of the males, but only 42% of the females had birthweights greater than 2499 grams (p = 0.0002). A differential growth pattern can bias birthweight-specific assessments of survival. Such a bias may have been responsible for o

Control of diarrhoeal disease in Tonga 1978-83.

Tonga, like many developing countries, suffers from a shortage of medical staff and a high morbidity and mortality from paediatric diarrhoeal disease. In 1980 a programme was started to train medical assistants and village administrators in the correct use of oral rehydration salt solution for rehydration. The effect on morbidity, mortality, and admission to hospital over the six years 1978-83 was assessed. After the introduction of the scheme the number of deaths due to diarrhoea fell considerably and the state of hydration in children admitted to hospital with diarrhoea greatly improved. It

Association of marital status and years of schooling with perinatal outcome: the influence of pre-natal care as an intermediate variable.

The association between mother's education and perinatal mortality, and between marital status and proportion of preterm deliveries was analyzed using data from 20,000 women and newborns delivered at the Hospital Barros Luco-Trudeau in Santiago, Chile. A highly significant correlation was found, but after being controlled by pre-natal care, that association disappeared for those mothers with good pre-natal care, remaining only as a part of the association for women who did not attend the pre-natal clinics or did not follow minimal standards of care. The definition used for "good pre-natal care

Triplet pregnancy in Nigeria: socio-biologic aspects.

A retrospective analysis of 20 triplet pregnancies not stimulated by clomiphene or gonadotrophins revealed a perinatal mortality of 26.3%. There were greater losses recorded in the case of mothers who had received no antenatal care than for those who had been seen before the babies' births. Triplet pregnancy in this series was associated with anemia, hypertension, postpartum hemorrhage and hydramnios. In Nigeria, where there is a high incidence of such pregnancy, it should be suspected more often than elsewhere. The authors recommend amnioscopy, amniocentesis and early resort to cesarean secti

Sudden Unexpected Postnatal Collapse: A Retrospective Cohort Study Describing Incidence, Risk Factors and Role of Perinatal Transition.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, risk factors and possible aetiology of sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC), a potentially fatal yet poorly understood event. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort, patient records from 483 284 infants born in Stockholm, Sweden, between 2002 and 2022 were screened for SUPC-related diagnoses. SUPC was defined as a collapse within the first 7 days of life in near-term infants with good postnatal adaptation. Maternal, infant and event characteristics were collected. Urine was analysed for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) metabolites in a subgroup of
