SVMB-Net: Local Global Fusion and Multi-Branch Cross-Feature Attention for Skin Lesion Segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of skin lesions remains a key challenge for early cancer diagnosis due to complex morphological variations such as irregular shape, heterogeneous texture and low contrast. To address these limitations, we propose SVMB-Net, a dual-architecture framework that integrates SwinTransformer and CNN with the following innovations: first, the Super ViT-CNN (SViT-C) hybrid encoder employs a special global restoration module for extracting high-level semantics, whereas the dual-branch fusion module combines CNN's local feature extraction with SwinTransformer's global context modelli

A deep learning model integrating domain-specific features for enhanced glaucoma diagnosis.

Glaucoma is a group of serious eye diseases that can cause incurable blindness. Despite the critical need for early detection, over 60% of cases remain undiagnosed, especially in less developed regions. Glaucoma diagnosis is a costly task and some models have been proposed to automate diagnosis based on images of the retina, specifically the area known as the optic cup and the associated disc where retinal blood vessels and nerves enter and leave the eye. However, diagnosis is complicated because both normal and glaucoma-affected eyes can vary greatly in appearance. Some normal cases, like gla

Empirical Distribution of Glottal Edges (EDGE): A Statistical Assessment of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High-Speed Videoendoscopy.

Although laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) is crucial for studying vocal fold vibrations, its translation to clinical practice has been hindered by the large volume of data it produces and the difficulty in interpreting current analysis methods. Although image processing techniques have been developed to map spatial-temporal data into two-dimensional representations, they alter the geometrical construction of the glottis and do not provide standard quantitative features, thus challenging clinical interpretation. In response, we propose a new visualization and analysis framework for ass

A Novel Approach to Explore Internal Cardiac Electrophysiological Pattern under Emotional Stress.

Numerous psychological and clinical studies have confirmed a correlation between mental and cardiac health. We aim to explore this relationship further by examining how emotions influence cardiac health. By collecting body surface potential and utilizing the electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) model, we can noninvasively and continuously reconstruct internal cardiac electrical activity. To enhance the existing ECGI model on various datasets, we propose an information fusion strategy called Emotional Potential Conversion CycleGAN. It enables data alignment across diverse datasets while preservi

Automating the extraction of otology symptoms from clinic letters: a methodological study using natural language processing.

BACKGROUND: Most healthcare data is in an unstructured format that requires processing to make it usable for research. Generally, this is done manually, which is both time-consuming and poorly scalable. Natural language processing (NLP) using machine learning offers a method to automate data extraction. In this paper we describe the development of a set of NLP models to extract and contextualise otology symptoms from free text documents. METHODS: A dataset of 1,148 otology clinic letters written between 2009 - 2011, from a London NHS hospital, were manually annotated and used to train a hybri

Advanced Deep Learning Framework for Cancer Cell Morphological Analysis and Tumor Mutational Burden Prediction From Histopathological Images.

Cancer cell morphological analysis represents a fundamental approach for understanding tumor behavior and predicting treatment responses in precision oncology. Tumor mutational burden (TMB) is a critical biomarker for immunotherapy efficacy, traditionally measured through expensive and time-consuming whole-exome sequencing methods. This study introduces CellMorphNet, an innovative deep learning architecture integrating cancer cell morphological feature extraction with advanced attention mechanisms to predict TMB levels from routine histopathological images. Our framework employs a novel cellul

Real-Time IMU-Based Kinematics in the Presence of Wireless Data Drop.

Wireless inertial motion capture holds promise for real-time human-machine interfaces and home-based rehabilitation applications. However, wireless data drop can cause significant estimation errors deteriorating performance or even making the system unusable. It is currently unclear how to estimate non-periodic kinematics with wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) in the presence of wireless data drop (packet loss). We thus propose a novel inference encoder-decoder network model for real-time kinematics during dynamic movement. Twenty-four healthy subjects performed yoga, golf, swimming,

NKUT: Dataset and Benchmark for Pediatric Mandibular Wisdom Teeth Segmentation.

Germectomy is a common surgery in pediatric dentistry to prevent the potential dangers caused by impacted mandibular wisdom teeth. Segmentation of mandibular wisdom teeth is a crucial step in surgery planning. However, manually segmenting teeth and bones from 3D volumes is time-consuming and may cause delays in treatment. Deep learning based medical image segmentation methods have demonstrated the potential to reduce the burden of manual annotations, but they still require a lot of well-annotated data for training. In this paper, we initially curated a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) data

Protecting Prostate Cancer Classification From Rectal Artifacts via Targeted Adversarial Training.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based deep neural networks (DNN) have been widely developed to perform prostate cancer (PCa) classification. However, in real-world clinical situations, prostate MRIs can be easily impacted by rectal artifacts, which have been found to lead to incorrect PCa classification. Existing DNN-based methods typically do not consider the interference of rectal artifacts on PCa classification, and do not design specific strategy to address this problem. In this study, we proposed a novel Targeted adversarial training with Proprietary Adversarial Samples (TPAS) strategy t

Exploring and Exploiting Multi-Modality Uncertainty for Tumor Segmentation on PET/CT.

Despite the success of deep learning methods in multi-modality segmentation tasks, they typically produce a deterministic output, neglecting the underlying uncertainty. The absence of uncertainty could lead to over-confident predictions with catastrophic consequences, particularly in safety-critical clinical applications. Recently, uncertainty estimation has attracted increasing attention, offering a measure of confidence associated with machine decisions. Nonetheless, existing uncertainty estimation approaches primarily focus on single-modality networks, leaving the uncertainty of multi-modal

Mitigating Diagnostic Errors in Lung Cancer Classification: A Multi-Eyes Principle to Uncertainty Quantification.

In radiology, particularly in lung cancer diagnosis, diagnostic errors and cognitive biases pose substantial challenges. These issues, including perceptual errors, interpretive mistakes, and cognitive biases such as anchoring and premature closure, are often unnoticed by experienced radiologists. To address these challenges, we propose the Multi-Eyes principle approach, which utilises multiple deep learning models to reduce bias and potentially improve diagnostic accuracy. Inspired by the Four-Eyes principle in business and cybersecurity, this methodology employs various 3D and 2D (for validat

Uncertainty-aware automatic TNM staging classification for [18F] Fluorodeoxyglucose PET-CT reports for lung cancer utilising transformer-based language models and multi-task learning.

BACKGROUND: [18F] Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET-CT is a clinical imaging modality widely used in diagnosing and staging lung cancer. The clinical findings of PET-CT studies are contained within free text reports, which can currently only be categorised by experts manually reading them. Pre-trained transformer-based language models (PLMs) have shown success in extracting complex linguistic features from text. Accordingly, we developed a multi-task 'TNMu' classifier to classify the presence/absence of tumour, node, metastasis ('TNM') findings (as defined by The Eight Edition of TNM Staging for Lu

HEMAsNet: A Hemisphere Asymmetry Network Inspired by the Brain for Depression Recognition From Electroencephalogram Signals.

Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that affects a significant portion of the global population. Despite recent advancements in EEG-based depression recognition models rooted in machine learning and deep learning approaches, many lack comprehensive consideration of depression's pathogenesis, leading to limited neuroscientific interpretability. To address these issues, we propose a hemisphere asymmetry network (HEMAsNet) inspired by the brain for depression recognition from EEG signals. HEMAsNet employs a combination of multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Me

Machine-learning-based models for the optimization of post-cervical spinal laminoplasty outpatient follow-up schedules.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergo regular clinical follow-up after laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy. However, those whose symptoms significantly improve and remain stable do not need to conform to a regular follow-up schedule. Based on the 1-year postoperative outcomes, we aimed to use a machine-learning (ML) algorithm to predict 2-year postoperative outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled 80 patients who underwent cervical laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy. The patients' Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scores (range: 0-17) were analyzed at the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperative timepoints

LA-ViT: A Network With Transformers Constrained by Learned-Parameter-Free Attention for Interpretable Grading in a New Laryngeal Histopathology Image Dataset.

Grading laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) based on histopathological images is a clinically significant yet challenging task. However, more low-effect background semantic information appeared in the feature maps, feature channels, and class activation maps, which caused a serious impact on the accuracy and interpretability of LSCC grading. While the traditional transformer block makes extensive use of parameter attention, the model overlearns the low-effect background semantic information, resulting in ineffectively reducing the proportion of background semantics. Therefore, we propose
