More than three billion people worldwide suffer from iron deficiency associated anemia and an equal number people suffer from zinc deficiency. These conditions are more prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. In developing countries, children under the age of five with stunted growth and pregnant or lactating women were found to be at high risk of zinc and iron deficiencies. Biofortification, defined as breeding to develop varieties of staple food crops whose grain contains higher levels of micronutrients such as iron and zinc, are one of the most promising, cost-effective and sustaina…

The cardiovascular state and life quality of patients suffering from chronic renal insufficiency is primarily determined by their haemostatic status. Renal anemia can positively be diagnosed if the glomerular filtration rate diminishes significantly (<60 ml/min/1,73 m 2 ). Other causes of anemia besides renal insufficiency can be excluded in these instances. The primary aim of erythropoietin treatment is to abolish the transfusion demand of patients suffering from renal insufficiency as this could lead to antibody formation and the transduction of viral infections. In case the existence of ren

Anaemia is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) encompassing non-dialysis dependent CKD (NDD-CKD) and dialysis dependent CKD (DD-CKD); people on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD); and kidney transplant recipients (KTR). Iron deficiency and erythropoietin deficiency are the most common causes of anaemia in people with CKD, especially those requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT). The Renal National Service Framework and National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence in the UK, and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), all advocate treatment of anaemia in pe

Iron deficiency and associated anemia are severe public health problems, which are prevalent in the developing world. We conducted a cross-sectional survey, comprised of written interview questions and laboratory analysis of blood biomarkers, in Kandal Province, Cambodia. The objective of this study is to examine possible factors that are associated with anemia in rural Cambodia. Data on socioeconomic status, water source/treatment practices, and meat consumption was also collected. Of the 297 women surveyed, 51.2% were anemic. Of those women found to be anemic, iron deficiency was implicated

The highest prevalence of schistosomiasis is usually found in school-age children and youth, where it represents the main cause of iron deficiency anemia. Study was done on 859 patients; their age from 5-18 years old at Nag Hammady at the period from July 2013 to July 2014 all of them had subjective history of contact or swimming in water canals. Urine was examined for urinary schistosomiasis by concentration and positive cases were subjected to urine analysis by Nucleopore filtration technique, S. haematobium was 30.96%, while stool samples were macroscopically examined mainly for enterobiasi

The transition of childhood to adulthood includes many changes to nearly all parts of the body and that is certainly true of blood and the coagulation system. Some disorders, like iron deficiency anemia, develop as the result of rapid growth. Approximately 10% of American adolescents are anemic and the prevalence is far greater in high-risk populations, such as urban, indigent African-American adolescents, in which 40-50% of young women are anemic. Adolescents at greater-than-average risk for developing iron deficiency anemia, such as athletes involved in lengthy, intense physical activities a

Climbing has developed into a popular recreational and elite sport, evidenced by a growing number of licenced competition athletes, and the acceptance into the Olympic calendar for Tokyo 2020. A nutritional assessment, including the evaluation of anthropometric and biochemical data, has not been previously reported in climbing athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the dietary intake, body composition, and iron status in experienced climbers, across a range of performance levels. Forty climbers (n = 20 male, n = 20 female; 8.8 ± 6.6 years' experience; BMI 21.6 ± 1.7) aged 18-

INTRODUCTION: The key roles of micronutrients are centered on their catalytic functions in chemical reactions and their structural support for significant molecules, such as enzymes and hormones. Micronutrient deficiencies and oxidative stress have been linked to low birth weight. We aimed to study the relationships of cord blood zinc, magnesium, copper and iron and the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) with neonatal anthropometry.
METHODS: We enrolled sixty-four term neonates born via vaginal delivery. Micronutrients and MDA levels were estimated from the cord blood. Birth weight

Deficiency of one of the copper transporters ATP7A and ATP7B leads to the rare X-linked disorder Menkes Disease (MD) or the rare autosomal disorder Wilson disease (WD), respectively. In order to investigate whether the ATP7A and the ATP7B genes may be transcriptionally regulated, we measured the expression level of the two genes at various concentrations of iron, copper, and insulin. Treating fibroblasts from controls or from individuals with MD or WD for 3 and 10 days with iron chelators revealed that iron deficiency led to increased transcript levels of both ATP7A and ATP7B. Copper deficienc

BACKGROUND: The functional significance of moderate riboflavin deficiency as it is currently assessed is not well understood. Animal and human studies have suggested a role for riboflavin in the absorption and mobilisation of iron and as such may be important in maintaining haematological status. Recent National Diet and Nutrition Surveys in the United Kingdom have shown that young women in particular are at risk of moderate riboflavin deficiency and low iron status.
METHODS/DESIGN: A randomised placebo controlled intervention trial was conducted to investigate the effect of riboflavin supple

Occasionally, horses are given large amounts of iron to improve performance. Although iron deficiency could limit erythrocyte production and other functions related to nonhematological tissues, it probably only occurs in blood loss. We have developed an enzyme immunoassay for ferritin in equine sera and evaluated its relationship to iron stored in liver and spleen. Serum ferritin correlated significantly (P less than 0.0001) with the concentration of nonheme iron in the liver and spleen. It increased following iron therapy and decreased after phlebotomy. We conclude that serum ferritin provide

Copper, iron, zinc, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and D are essential nutrients but can cause disease when deficient or excessive in exotic animals. Copper toxicity often results from dietary overload, causing liver damage and hemolysis, while deficiency leads to neurologic signs. Iron overload, especially in birds, causes hemosiderosis and organ damage. Zinc toxicity commonly arises from ingesting metal objects, producing neurological and gastrointestinal signs. Vitamin imbalances cause diverse effects: vitamin A affects epithelial health, vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, and vitamin D toxic

Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS), also called Patterson-Kelly-Brown syndrome, is a rare cause of dysphagia in children. This syndrome is associated with single or multiple webs in the upper esophagus with frequent iron deficiency. PVS usually occurs in adults, particularly in Caucasian middle-aged women, in the fourth to seventh decade of life, and is rare in childhood. There are various theories about what causes PVS. One theory suggests that iron deficiency plays a crucial role in its development. Iron repletion often improves dysphagia, although some patients require esophageal dilatation or b

Two experiments are reported which show that rats are capable of forming an association between the presence of iron in a solution when it is not specifically needed and a subsequent state of iron deficiency. Specifically, rats were trained to lever press for water while thirsty. One group received ferrous ions in addition to the water. When these rats were subsequently rendered iron deficient, they lever pressed more under extinction conditions as a graded function of lower hemoglobin levels. Controls that either did not receive ferrous ions during training or received solutions other than fe

Photosynthetic organisms are among the earliest life forms on earth and their biochemistry is strictly dependent on a wide range of inorganic nutrients owing to the use of metal cofactor-dependent enzymes in photosynthesis, respiration, inorganic nitrogen and sulfur assimilation. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a photosynthetic eukaryotic model organism for the study of trace metal homeostasis. Chlamydomonas spp. are widely distributed and can be found in soil, glaciers, acid mines and sewage ponds, suggesting that the genus has significant capacity for acclimation to micronutrient availability.

Iron is a crucial element required to sustain multiple biological processes, including oxygen transport, DNA synthesis, and electron transport. In living cells, iron exists as either ferrous iron (Fe2+) or ferric iron (Fe3+), and its redox forms are regulated by the labile iron pool. Both iron deficiency and excess can lead to a range of pathological conditions, such as anemia, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and ischemia and reperfusion injury. Iron overload can cause oxidative damage and even cell death, especially via ferroptosis. Impaired ferroptosis pathways are implicated in the pat

There is world-wide concern that women of childbearing age cannot meet the increased iron needs during pregnancy. In the industrial world however, iron supplementation during pregnancy is a controversial issue. On the one hand, selective iron supplementation after iron status assessment has been recommended because not all women need iron, and compliance is likely to be better when an individual's need is recognized. On the other hand, routine iron supplementation to all women in the second half of pregnancy has been advocated in order to reach all women without the difficulties associated wit

1 hour after i. v. infusion of colloidal iron in iron deficient subjects uniform phagosomal iron granules were observed in macrophages and endothelial cells of several organs. 7 to 10 days later transformation into ferritin coould be visualized in macrophages only. Now, these cells showed diffuse iron staining of the cytoplasm due to dispersed ferritin molecules. Polymorphous lysosomes contained densely packed particles from still unchanged ferric hydroxide to paracristalline ferritin. The macrophageal iron was mobilizable in few days to several weeks. The univorm lysosomal iron granules of en

IMPORTANCE: Anemia is common in pregnancy and increases the risk of adverse outcomes. Iron deficiency is a leading cause of anemia in sub-Saharan Africa, and iron supplementation is the standard of care during pregnancy; however, recent trials among children have raised concerns regarding the safety of iron supplementation in malaria-endemic regions. There is limited evidence on the safety of iron supplementation during pregnancy in these areas.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of iron supplementation during pregnancy in a malaria-endemic region.
