The severity of mouse pathologies caused by the bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti in relation to host immune status.

Cercariae of the nasal bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti are able to penetrate into mammalian skin and migrate to the mouse central nervous system (CNS) causing tissue injury in certain cases. Our study shows that the severity of T. regenti pathologies in the CNS closely depends on the host immune status. During the primary infection of immunocompetent mice, the parasites evoked an acute inflammatory reaction in the skin and the CNS involving focal oedema and cellular infiltration of the tissue. Challenge infections resulted in the development of extensive inflammatory foci in the host

Tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials in spinal cord hemisection.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) have been studied in many disease states since they were first described by Dawson in 1947. However, there have been very few reports of SEP findings in patients with spinal cord hemisection. On the basis of clinical correlation, Giblin first postulated that the activity giving rise to the initial cortical components of the SEP travels through the dorsal column-lemniscal system. However, the pathway through which these evoked potentials are transmitted has recently been questioned. This paper examines the results of tibial nerve SEPS performed on four pat

[The ankle joint fork and tarsus].

Severe soft tissue injury occurring in sprains and dislocations may lead to painful disability after plaster-immobilisation for 6-12 weeks. Therefore, primary operation is indicated for ligamentous repair, osteochondral fracture-fixation and internal K-wire stabilization of dislocations after reduction. After 1 week of immobilisation, the patient should begin active daily muscle exercises; in the 2nd week patients are mobilized with support of a dynamic, partial weight-bearing splint, allowing continued muscle exercises until weight-bearing is possible 6-8 weeks after surgery. In 23 patients u

[Neurologic symptoms and their dynamics in contusions of the spinal cord of mild and moderate severity at the level of the 1st and 2d cervical vertebrae].

The results of the study of 154 patients with an acute trauma of the cervical portion of the vertebral column showed that fractures, dislocations and fractures/dislocations of the first-second cervical vertebrae accounted for 10.4% of all the studied cases. In mild contusion of the first-second segments the leading clinical symptoms in the acute period were pareses of the arms and paralyses of hands with retained reflexes and insignificant impairments of sensitivity in fingers, i.e., the level of clinical manifestations did not correspond with the conventional segmento-metameric innervation. Electrophysiological evaluation of the afferent spinal roots and nerves in patients with conus medullaris and cauda equina lesions.

The clinical value and practical application of the lumbosacral evoked electrospinogram (Espg) and somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials (SEP) were investigated in 52 patients with conus medullaris or cauda equina lesions. It was shown that the destruction or compression of the conus/cauda equina region by traumatic fracture and dislocation of upper lumbar vertebrae, by midline herniation of the nucleus pulposus and by tumoral mass, produced significant reduction in amplitude and delay in latency of Espg recorded just above the lesion site, and the SEP behaved in a similar way. The degree o

Interlimb Asymmetry in Elite Soccer Players During Jumping and Change-of-Direction Tasks: Emphasizing Chronic Ankle Instability-Induced Contralateral Limb Deficit.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) can induce contralateral limb deficits, influencing interlimb asymmetry during athletic tasks. Understanding the magnitude, direction, and individual thresholds of these asymmetries is critical for effective rehabilitation and performance monitoring. HYPOTHESIS: CAI-induced contralateral limb deficits significantly influence the magnitude and direction of interlimb asymmetry in jumping and change-of-direction-speed (CODS) tasks. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Male elite soccer players with (n = 32) and w

Muscle performance but not biomechanics associate with second knee injury in a matched cohort of athletes who passed functional return-to-sport criteria after ACL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Athletes remain at risk for a second knee injury after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), even after passing return-to-sport (RTS) testing. While biomechanical asymmetries have been linked to reinjury, it is unclear whether deficits persist in athletes who meet RTS criteria. This study compared muscle performance and biomechanical function between athletes who sustained a second knee injury after passing RTS testing and matched controls without reinjury. METHODS: In this case-control study, 11 athletes who returned to their preinjury sport within one year after ACLR, p

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Fibular Motion After Fixation of Syndesmotic Injuries With a Screw or Suture-Button Construct.

BACKGROUND: Suture-button constructs are an alternative to screw fixation for syndesmotic injuries, and proponents advocate that suture-button constructs may allow physiological motion of the syndesmosis. Recent biomechanical data suggest that fibular instability with syndesmotic injuries is greatest in the sagittal plane, but the design of a suture-button construct, being a rope and 2 retention washers, is most effective along the axis of the rope (in the coronal plane). Some studies report that suture-button constructs are able to constrain fibular motion in the coronal plane, but the abilit

Electromyographic examination of knee training using a hybrid assistive limb after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A case report.

Muscle co-contraction can result in higher joint contact forces, compromising knee joint mobility for stability, thus leading to impaired lower extremity neuromuscular control, delayed return to sports, and increased incidence of secondary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury post-ACL reconstruction. Hybrid assistive limb (HAL) training has the potential to correct impairment of antagonistic or synergistic muscle movement of the knee joint through bioelectric signal feedback from muscle signals with computer processing. We considered that HAL training would contribute to improve peak muscle

Free extended posterior tibial artery perforator flap with the neurovascular plexus of a saphenous nerve branch for large soft tissue and sensory reconstruction: Anatomic study and clinical application.

BACKGROUND: The posterior tibial artery perforator (PTAP) flap is a useful tool for reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the leg. However, the size and reliability of the flap largely depends on the quality of the perforator by which the flap is supplied, and the sensory recovery of the flap is limited. In this study, the anatomy of the saphenous nerve branches and their accompanying vessels was investigated, and a free extended PTAP flap with the neurovascular plexus of a saphenous nerve branch was designed for large soft tissue and sensory reconstruction in a series of clinical cases. Biomechanical Differences of Multidirectional Jump Landings Among Female Basketball and Soccer Players.

Taylor, JB, Ford, KR, Schmitz, RJ, Ross, SE, Ackerman, TA, and Shultz, SJ. Biomechanical differences of multidirectional jump landings among female basketball and soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 31(11): 3034-3045, 2017-Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention programs are less successful in basketball than soccer and may be due to distinct movement strategies that these athletes develop from sport-specific training. The purpose of this study was to identify biomechanical differences between female basketball and soccer players during multidirectional jump landings. Lower extremit

Minimally invasive trans-sacral approach to L5-S1 interbody fusion: Preliminary results from 1 center and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar interbody fusion has long been used for the treatment of painful degenerative spinal conditions. The anterior approach is not feasible in some patients, and the posterior approach is associated with a risk of neural complications and possibly muscle injury. A trans-sacral technique was developed that allows access to the L5-S1 disc space. The purposes of this study were to investigate the clinical outcome of trans-sacral interbody fusion in a consecutive series of patients from 1 center and to perform a comprehensive review of the literature on this procedure. METHODS: A li
