Epidemiology of bloodstream infections and infective endocarditis: new insights on typical species and echocardiography screening.

BACKGROUND: Real-world data on bloodstream infections (BSI) and infective endocarditis (IE) epidemiology, their implications for screening and the applicability of typical species concepts by guidelines are scarce. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to elucidate the relationship between BSI epidemiology and the predictors of IE, as well as the use of echocardiographic screening for IE in BSI. METHODS: Single-centre registry included all BSI of consecutive hospitalised patients from January 2015 to December 2021. IE prevalence and echocardiographic screening were assessed, also aggregating according

Stakeholder perceptions of a workplace-based screening programme for artisanal and small-scale miners in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) experience high prevalence of disease, notably tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficieny virus (HIV), silicosis, sexually transmitted infections, substance misuse, and mercury and cyanide toxicity. Despite this, targeted healthcare interventions are limited. AIMS: To explore the perceptions of ASMs and their leaders/representatives in relation to a 5-year targeted health screening intervention for ASMs in Zimbabwe. Screening included TB, HIV and silicosis. Insights were also gathered from healthcare staff, academics and national stakeholders

Is routine terminal ileum intubation justified during screening colonoscopy? Evidence from a regional screening program.

UNLABELLED: Background∕Aim: Although colonoscopy represents the cornerstone of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, the incremental diagnostic yield of routine terminal ileum (TI) intubation remains insufficiently defined, particularly in fecal immunochemical test (FIT) positive patients. This study evaluated the feasibility, diagnostic performance, and clinical relevance of routine TI intubation in participants enrolled in a regional CRC screening program. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of individuals aged 50-74 years who underwent colonoscopy within a r

A novel and cost-effective model to screen and treat cervical cancer and precancers at the point of care.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer has a high incidence to high mortality rate and poses an important global burden that disproportionately affects women in underdeveloped areas of the world. The World Health Organization has proposed a new and ambitious policy that aims to reduce the number of deaths from cervical cancer by 62.6 million over the next 70 years. However, there are many obstacles to the adoption of this policy and implementation in both Resource-Rich and Resource-Constrained Countries. METHODS: In this perspective article, we propose a cost-effective, sustainable, and practical model

Influence of a nationwide colorectal cancer screening program on the incidence of synchronous colorectal peritoneal metastases.

This study aims to assess the influence of colorectal cancer screening on the incidence of synchronous colorectal peritoneal metastases (CPM). Patients diagnosed with CPM between 2009 and 2022 were selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Crude rates of the observed and expected CPM incidence were calculated per 100,000 individuals and compared. Expected incidence was extrapolated from the incidence in the years prior to screening invitation. In total, 9,238 patients with CPM were included. For the screen-eligible population (55-75 years), the observed CPM incidence increased from 5.1 (2

Creating a retinal image database to develop an automated screening tool for diabetic retinopathy in India.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes, is the fifth leading cause of blindness worldwide. Given the critical nature of the disease, it is paramount that individuals with diabetes undergo annual screening for early and timely detection of DR, facilitating prompt ophthalmic assessment and intervention. However, screening for DR, which involves assessing visual acuity and retinal examination through ophthalmoscopy or retinal photography, presents a significant global challenge due to the massive volume of individuals requiring annual reviews. To counter thi

Facilitators and barriers to community-based HIV testing in Guinea: a CFIR-based implementation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In Guinea, where 36% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) are unaware of their serostatus, innovative screening strategies are crucial to achieving the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS' 95-95-95 targets. Community-based HIV testing, as recommended by the World Health Organization, aims to reach at-risk populations by leveraging local resources and actors. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), this study assessed facilitators and barriers to implementing community-based HIV screening across 10 pilot sites in Guinea, with the goal to optimizing i

Mental Health Assessments for Resettled Afghan Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Since August 2021, over 90,000 Afghan evacuees have been resettled in the USA. An estimated 40% of evacuees are under the age of 18. These youth are at risk for poor mental health because of migration-related trauma and stress. Health care providers need screening tools to accurately assess mental health problems in this population. The objective of this study was to identify and develop culturally appropriate screening tools for mental health problems facing resettled Afghan youth ages 10-17. METHODS: A total of 80 Afghan refugees in the Northeast USA and 4 Afghan mental health e

[Addressing the feasibility of abdominal aortic aneurysm screening in Hungarian primary care].

In Hungary, there is currently no institutionalised, organised, invitation-based screening programme for the detection of abdominal aortic aneurysms. In contrast, an increasing number of countries are developing and launching their own pilot abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programmes, as was recently the case in the Czech Republic on the first of January 2025. In Hungary, a validation pilot study was initiated in the autumn of 2023, in which a subset of general practitioners – who previously participated in point-of-care ultrasound training and demonstrated proficiency in the abdominal aor

EDENT1FI Master Protocol for screening of presymptomatic early-stage type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The identification of type 1 diabetes at an early presymptomatic stage has clinical benefits. These include a reduced risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at the clinical manifestation of the disease and a significant reduction in clinical symptoms. The European action for the Diagnosis of Early Non-clinical Type 1 diabetes For disease Interception (EDENT1FI) represents a pioneering effort to advance early detection of type 1 diabetes through public health screening. With the EDENT1FI Master Protocol, the project aims to harmonise and standardise screening for early-stage type 1 d

Understanding the cost-utility of implementing HIV self-testing with digital-based supports.

INTRODUCTION: HIV self-testing (HIVST) is an innovative strategy that has been shown to increase uptake of HIV testing compared to conventional facility-based testing. HIVST implementation with digital-based supports may help facilitate testing accessibility and linkage to care after a reactive self-test. Economic evidence around community-based implementation of HIVST is growing; however, economic evidence around digital-based HIVST approaches remains limited. METHODS: We used previously published cost and efficacy data from HIVST interventions, with the specific intervention model differing

HCV elimination in hyperendemic areas: Experiences in Taiwan.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a major global health burden, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare. In 2017, Taiwan launched its National Hepatitis C Elimination Program, aiming for national elimination by 2025 through micro-elimination strategies, with a focus on hyperendemic areas. This review summarizes the outcomes of multiple intervention models implemented across high-prevalence areas. In regions with anti-HCV prevalence exceeding 10 %, targeted outreach by hepatologists or multidisciplinary teams has achieved a high reduction in viremia. Community-based screening an

Prevention and Management of Viral Hepatitis in Primary Care.

The primary care clinician can play a substantial role in the management and prevention of viral hepatitis infections, which cause a substantial burden of hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis worldwide and in the US. One-time hepatitis B and C virus testing is now recommended as part of universal adult screening measures, and more frequently based on risk factors. Immunization strategies for hepatitis A and B have also been updated, with a new adjuvanted, conjugated hepatitis B vaccine (HepB-CpG) that provides greater efficacy than older vaccines. Management of hepatitis B and C has been str

13-Plex DeAla Isobaric Reagents for High-Throughput Proteome Quantification.

Isobaric labeling techniques are widely used in mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics to enable the simultaneous analysis of multiple samples. However, commercial isobaric tags are expensive due to complex synthesis and costly reagents, limiting their use in large-scale studies. Here, we introduce a novel, cost-effective diethylalanine-based isobaric reagent (DeAla), synthesized using diethylated alanine and β-alanine with N-hydroxysuccinimide. The DeAla tag offers several advantages, including improved peptide fragmentation, enhanced protein identification, and competitive pricing.

Multi-level barriers and facilitators to implementing tobacco screening and cessation counseling in a Federally Qualified Health Center.

BACKGROUND: Despite persistent tobacco control efforts, the prevalence of smoking, especially among low-income populations, remains high. The prevalence of tobacco use among the primarily low-income populations served by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), is approximately 5 percentage points higher than the national average. Evidence based interventions such as clinician delivered tobacco cessation counseling are brief and effective, however, providers are often faced with various barriers that impede their ability to offer tobacco related counseling consistently. The purpose of this
