Change in Metabolomic Profile Associated with an Average Increase in Plain Water Intake of >+ 1 L/Day, Sustained Over 4 Weeks, in Healthy Young Men with Initial Total Water Intake Below 2 L/Day.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cells adapt to chronic extracellular hypotonicity by altering metabolism. Corresponding effects of sustained hypotonic exposure at the whole-person level remain to be confirmed and characterized in clinical and population-based studies. This analysis aimed to 1) describe changes in urine and serum metabolomic profiles associated with four weeks of sustained > +1 L/d drinking water in healthy, normal weight, young men, 2) identify metabolic pathways potentially impacted by chronic hypotonicity, and 3) explore if effects of chronic hypotonicity differ by type of specimen and/or

Schistosoma Infection Burden and Risk Factors among School-Aged Children in a Rural Area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Despite continuous efforts to control schistosomiasis (SCH) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), it still poses a significant challenge. In order to enhance control measures, additional research is necessary. This study documents the burden of SCH infection and its predictors in a rural area of the DRC. We conducted a household cross-sectional study from June to August 2021 among 480 school-aged children (SAC) aged 5-15 years living in a rural area of Kisangi, in the southwest DRC. We collected and examined stool, urine, and blood samples of each child. Additionally, we obtained data

Intake and adherence to energy and nutrient recommendations among women and men with binge-type eating disorders and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Research quantifying dietary intake in individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder (i.e., binge-type eating disorders) is surprisingly scant. We assessed the dietary intake of women and men with binge-type eating disorders in a large case-control study and compared them with healthy controls. We also evaluated the extent to which their dietary intake adhered to the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations. Among cases, we assessed the relationship of binge eating frequency with energy and macronutrient intake. METHODS: We derived the total daily energy, macro-, and m

Disruption of Iron Homeostasis and Mitochondrial Metabolism Are Promising Targets to Inhibit Candida auris.

Fungal infections are a global threat, but treatments are limited due to a paucity in antifungal drug targets and the emergence of drug-resistant fungi such as Candida auris. Metabolic adaptations enable microbial growth in nutrient-scarce host niches, and they further control immune responses to pathogens, thereby offering opportunities for therapeutic targeting. Because it is a relatively new pathogen, little is known about the metabolic requirements for C. auris growth and its adaptations to counter host defenses. Here, we establish that triggering metabolic dysfunction is a promising strat

Prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in Brazilian women of childbearing age: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is among the most common micronutrient deficiencies in women of childbearing age and may affect children's development. Brazil has several national programs to tackle this condition, such as food fortification and supplementation for pregnant women, but IDA prevalence in this population has not been systematically reviewed. We sought to determine the prevalence of IDA in Brazilian women of childbearing age through a systematic review with metanalysis. METHODOLOGY: A protocol was previously published on the PROSPERO platform under the code CRD4202020096

Retinoic Acid Increases Cellular Cholesterol in Leishmania donovani-Infected Macrophages in an mTOR-Independent Manner.

Infection with Leishmania donovani reduces cellular cholesterol and thus deprives the host cells by inhibiting its synthesis and uptake. Changes in cholesterol levels increase the chance of attachment and internalization of L. donovani in macrophages (Mϕ). Retinoic acid (RA), an important micronutrient, restores the lysosomal uptake of cholesterol in L. donovani-infected Mϕ. Importantly, mammalian (or mechanistic) target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) increases the cellular cholesterol level by increasing expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2). Whether the efficacy

[Assessment of relationship of lipid and carbon profile indicators with vitamin D supply in children depending on body mass index].

Overweight children represent a particularly vulnerable group for hypovitaminosis D. Clinical studies on the relationship between vitamin D (VD) deficiency and metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disorders are controversial, and for children of primary school age who have overweight and obesity are insufficient. The aim of the research was to study the relationship between lipid and carbohydrate metabolism indicators and VD status in children, depending on the body mass index. Material and methods. A cross-sectional (one-step) study was carried out on a sample of 154 children with differ

Iron Deficiency Anemia at Time of Vaccination Predicts Decreased Vaccine Response and Iron Supplementation at Time of Vaccination Increases Humoral Vaccine Response: A Birth Cohort Study and a Randomized Trial Follow-Up Study in Kenyan Infants.

Background: Iron deficiency may impair adaptive immunity and is common among African infants at time of vaccination. Whether iron deficiency impairs vaccine response and whether iron supplementation improves humoral vaccine response is uncertain. Methods: We performed two studies in southern coastal Kenya. In a birth cohort study, we followed infants to age 18 mo and assessed whether anemia or iron deficiency at time of vaccination predicted vaccine response to three-valent oral polio, diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis-Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, ten-valent pneumococcal-conjug

Relief Role of Lysine Chelated Zinc (Zn) on 6-Week-Old Maize Plants under Tannery Wastewater Irrigation Stress.

Tannery wastewater mainly comes from leather industries. It has high organic load, high salinity, and many other pollutants, including chromium (Cr). Tannery wastewater is generally used for crop irrigation in some areas of Pakistan and worldwide, due to the low availability of good quality of irrigation water. As tannery wastewater has many nutrients in it, its lower concentration benefits the plant growth, but at a higher concentration, it damages the plants. Chromium in tannery wastewater accumulates in plants, and causes stress at physiological and biochemical levels. In recent times, the

Zinc Salts Block Hepatitis E Virus Replication by Inhibiting the Activity of Viral RNA-Dependent RNA Polymerase.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes an acute, self-limiting hepatitis in healthy individuals and leads to chronic disease in immunocompromised individuals. HEV infection in pregnant women results in a more severe outcome, with the mortality rate going up to 30%. Though the virus usually causes sporadic infection, epidemics have been reported in developing and resource-starved countries. No specific antiviral exists against HEV. A combination of interferon and ribavirin therapy has been used to control the disease with some success. Zinc is an essential micronutrient that plays crucial roles in mult

Zinc supplementation for improving pregnancy and infant outcome.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that low serum zinc levels may be associated with suboptimal outcomes of pregnancy such as prolonged labour, atonic postpartum haemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, preterm labour and post-term pregnancies, although many of these associations have not yet been established. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of zinc supplementation in pregnancy on maternal, fetal, neonatal and infant outcomes. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (31 October 2014) and reference lists of retrieved studies. SELECTION C

Effects on mortality of a nutritional intervention for malnourished HIV-infected adults referred for antiretroviral therapy: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Malnourished HIV-infected African adults are at high risk of early mortality after starting antiretroviral therapy (ART). We hypothesized that short-course, high-dose vitamin and mineral supplementation in lipid nutritional supplements would decrease mortality. METHODS: The study was an individually-randomised phase III trial conducted in ART clinics in Mwanza, Tanzania, and Lusaka, Zambia. Participants were 1,815 ART-naïve non-pregnant adults with body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m² who were referred for ART based on CD4 count <350 cells/μL or WHO stage 3 or 4 disease. The interven

Between a rock and a hard place: trace element nutrition in Chlamydomonas.

Photosynthetic organisms are among the earliest life forms on earth and their biochemistry is strictly dependent on a wide range of inorganic nutrients owing to the use of metal cofactor-dependent enzymes in photosynthesis, respiration, inorganic nitrogen and sulfur assimilation. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a photosynthetic eukaryotic model organism for the study of trace metal homeostasis. Chlamydomonas spp. are widely distributed and can be found in soil, glaciers, acid mines and sewage ponds, suggesting that the genus has significant capacity for acclimation to micronutrient availability.

[Effectiveness and complications of bariatric surgery in the treatment of morbid obesity].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Bariatric surgery represents an affective therapeutic alternative for patients with morbid obesity refractory to medical treatment. However, these surgical techniques increase the risk of producing a protein-energy hyponutrition or a selective deficit of some micronutrient. The aim of this work has been to analyze the anthropometrical, nutritional, digestive and cardiovascular risk factors changes and quality of life in patients with morbid obesity submitted to bariatric surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study evaluating a group of patients

Effect of chromium on apolipoprotein A-I expression in HepG2 cells.

OBJECTIVE: Chromium is a key micronutrient required for lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Some but not all clinical trials have associated use of chromium supplements with improved insulin sensitivity and lipid profile including increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. METHODS: Because apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) is the principal protein of high-density lipoprotein, the molecular pathways underlying chromium-related changes in apoA-I expression were studied in a human hepatoma cell line (HepG2) transfected with full-length apoA-I promoter attached to the reporter chloramphenico

[Preventing the transmission of HIV-1 from mother to child in Africa in the year 2000].

African women of childbearing age are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection, and this has led to an increase in the number of pediatric HIV infections reported due to the risk of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding. Various approaches to preventing MTCT have been, or are being, evaluated in developing countries, especially in Africa. New data from these trials are becoming available and have implications for population-based intervention programs that require urgent consideration. We performed a critical review of 18 randomized trials and
