INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Sinonasal malignant neoplasms are uncommon, with an annual incidence of less than 1/100,000. About 80% of these are squamous cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma are next in frequency. Lymphoma of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx are rare, constituting less than 5% of all extranodal lymphomas.

We present the case of an 81-yr-old man with a prostatic adenocarcinoma and a metastatic carcinoid. Simultaneous occurrence of hormonally treated adenocarcinoma of the prostate and a carcinoid has been described before. The pathogenesis of this coincidence is largely unclear; however, androgen deprivation therapy might play a key role in neuroendocrine differentiation of adenocarcinoma cells. Early recognition of the carcinoid syndrome is crucial, as surgical cure is not possible after metastasis. We provide a brief review of recent literature.

Cavernomas are rare vascular malformations of the venous blood system (synon. cavernous angiomas) with a slow blood flow. We describe a case of synchronous splenic marginal zone-cell lymphoma (SMZL) and T-cell large granular lymphocyte leukemia involving the spleen, liver, bone marrow and peripheral blood. The synchronous occurrence of these two processes was documented by morphological, immunophenotypical and molecular (PCR) analyses of all affected tissues. The pathogenetic mechanisms which may be responsible for the concomitant appearance of these two rather infrequent entities in the same anatomic sites are discussed.

BACKGROUND: To define the incidence of BRCA1 mutations among patients seen in clinics that evaluate the risk of breast cancer, we analyzed DNA samples from women seen in this setting and constructed probability tables to provide estimates of the likelihood of finding a BRCA1 mutation in individual families.
METHODS: Clinical information, family histories, and blood for DNA analysis were obtained from 263 women with breast cancer. Conformation-sensitive gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing were used to identify BRCA1 mutations.

Family history is an important risk factor for cutaneous malignant melanoma. We evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients with cutaneous familial melanoma. A chart review was conducted, including all patients who presented to Massachusetts General Hospital Pigmented Lesion Clinic over an 8-year period. We described two cases of malignant schwannoma arising in patients with von Recklinghausen's disease and examined the mast cells infiltrated into histologic sections.
