Nutrition: impact on oral and systemic health.

Good dietary practices and optimal nutritional status promote growth and tissue development, as well as feature prominently in the prevention of diseases. Malnutrition (particularly protein-energy malnutrition, which invariably involves concurrent deficiencies of the antioxidant micronutrients) promotes salivary gland hypofunction, impaired immunity, and an early shift in the oral microbial ecology toward a preponderance of anaerobic organisms. The immune suppression, which includes impaired cytokine function as well as diminished acute-phase response to infections, impacts negatively on the n

Plasma electrolytes, total cholesterol, liver enzymes, and selected antioxidant status in protein energy malnutrition.

Golden and Ramdath proposed the free radical theory of kwashiorkor, suggesting that the changes seen in kwashiorkor may be the result of an imbalance between the production and safe disposal of free radicals. In malnourished children, mineral metabolism and antioxidant status need renewed attention especially in relation to cause and functional significance of the changes in concentration of these substances. In the present study, the modified Wellcome classification was used to classify the protein energy malnourished children into kwashiorkor marasmic-kwashiorkor, marasmus and underweight. T

Nutrient intake and gastrointestinal disorders related to masticatory performance in the edentulous elderly.

The effects of chewing efficiency on nutrient intake and the prevalence of gastrointestinal disorders were determined in edentulous elderly subjects. Three hundred sixty-seven noninstitutionalized individuals aged 60 years and over were interviewed. Denture masticatory performance and the collection of dietary information were assessed with the "Swallowing Threshold Test Index" and a food-frequency questionnaire. Approximately half (47%) of the participants exhibited a low masticatory performance classification. Thirty-nine percent used the same prosthesis for more than 10 years and 28% were t

Alcohol and Substance Use After Bariatric Surgery: Nutritional Risks and Clinical Implications in Long-Term Postoperative Care.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) has evolved into a highly effective neurohormonal intervention for severe obesity; however, it introduces unique long-term vulnerabilities, particularly regarding alcohol (AUD) and substance use disorders (SUD). This review synthesizes the epidemiological, pharmacokinetic, and neurobiological drivers of postoperative substance misuse. Procedures like Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) radically alter ethanol metabolism, eliminating first-pass metabolism and accelerating gastric emptying, while simultaneously recalibrating reward pathways, creating a "reward g

Clinical and Economic Impact in Dysphagia Management: A Preliminary Economic Evaluation for the WeanCare-Dysphameal Approach.

Background/Objectives: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is a frequent condition among older adults in long-term care facilities, often leading to malnutrition, dehydration, and increased mortality. Modified-texture diets (MTDs) are used to address these risks, though traditional preparation methods often compromise nutritional density and standardization. The WeanCare protocol with Dysphameal® technology introduces an innovative solution by offering IDDSI-compliant, high-density, freeze-dried meals. This study assesses its clinical effectiveness and economic impact. Methods: A six-month quasi-expe

Association between secondhand smoke exposure and severe headaches or migraine in never-smoking adults.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to examine the relationship between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and severe headaches or migraine in never-smoking adults verified by serum cotinine. BACKGROUND: Current evidence about the association between self-reported SHS exposure and headaches or migraine is limited and contradictory. An important issue lies in the lack of actual SHS exposure assessment through biomarkers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 4560 never-smoking adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2004. The SHS exposure was evaluated b

Association between inflammatory potential of diet and self-reported severe headache or migraine: A cross-sectional study of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation plays an important role in migraine development. Dietary interventions that reduce the inflammatory state are effective for migraine prophylaxis. However, little is yet known about the association between the inflammatory potential of diet and migraine in the general US adult population. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the inflammatory potential of diet is associated with severe headache or migraine in US adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from adult participants in the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Sev

Wasting and Underweight in Northern African Children: Findings from Multiple-Indicator Cluster Surveys, 2014-2018.

Northern Africa faces multiple severe detrimental factors that impact child nutrition. This study aimed to identify the predictors for wasting and underweight in children aged 0-59 months in Northern Africa. We analysed pooled cross-sectional data from multiple-indicator cluster surveys conducted in four countries (Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, and Tunisia) involving 37,816 children aged 0-59 months. A logistic regression analysis was used, considering clustering and sampling weights, to identify factors associated with wasting and underweight among children aged 0-23, 24-59, and 0-59 months. Among c

Early neurological development and nutritional status in Mexican socially deprived contexts.

Early childhood development (ECD) is a critical stage in the intergenerational process of human development. Targeted interventions depend on accurate and up-to-date ECD measurements. This paper presents estimates for the nutritional and neurodevelopmental status of socially marginalized children in Mexico. We performed a cross-sectional study based on data collected in 2019-2020 during home visits to 1,176 children aged 0-38 months across 24 highly marginalized locations in Oaxaca. We assessed nutritional status according to the World Health Organization 2006 child-growth standards and ECD st

Patients with different types of arthritis may be at risk for major depression: results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018.

BACKGROUND: Arthritis is one of the common causes of physical pain and disability, which often makes patients fall into major depression. However, the correlation between arthritis and major depression, and how different types of arthritis correspond to major depression remain to be explored. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between arthritis and major depression. METHODS: Arthritis status was reported by participants themselves, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was used to evaluate major depression, lo

Metastatic mineralisation caused by vitamin D intoxication in hand-raised short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus).

CASE REPORT: Two cases of metastatic mineralisation caused by dietary excess of vitamin D are reported in hand-raised short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) puggles at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Oversupplementation was attributed to excessive levels of vitamin D in Wombaroo Echidna Milk Replacer fed to the puggles. No information exists regarding the naturally occurring vitamin D levels in echidna milk, but, given the low serum levels that have been observed in free-ranging animals, it is likely to be low. CONCLUSION: The vitamin D concentration in Wombaroo Echidna Milk Rep

Gastrointestinal and nutritional problems in neurologically impaired children.

The current increasing survival of children with severe central nervous system damage has created a major challenge for medical care. Gastrointestinal and nutritional problems in neurologically impaired children have been recently recognized as an integral part of their disease, often leading to growth failure and worsened quality of life for both children and caregivers. Nutritional support is essential for the optimal care of these children. Undernourished handicapped children might not respond properly to intercurrent diseases and suffer unnecessarily. On the other hand, restoring a normal

Child maltreatment and neglect, or poverty and ignorance: An old case from the museum.

We present an old case, from the year 1928, of a girl who, as an 18-month-old, had ingested a small amount of lye, and over time oesophageal stenosis had developed. However, her parents had not taken her to hospital until 4 months after the event, after an episode of bloody vomiting. She spent the remaining time of her life in the hospital, where she died as a 3-year-old. Her parents did not visit once during that time. After the autopsy, the opinion about the cause and mechanism of death had five steps: the immediate cause of death was purulent pneumonia, which was a complication of small pox
