MR imaging showed swelling and diffuse signal changes in the spinal cord in two patients with progressive myelopathy. MR angiography revealed slow-flow perimedullary vessels extending to the skull base, which are consistent with drainage vessels of a dural arteriovenous fistula at the craniocervical junction. This fistula was subsequently seen in both patients on selective arteriograms of the ascending pharyngeal and vertebral arteries.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical utility of dynamic gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the breast with commercially available techniques in patients scheduled for excisional biopsy.

The diagnostic value of a contrast enhanced MRI in patients with Bell's palsy was investigated. It was a characteristic finding that the internal acoustic meatal segment of the facial nerve was enhanced only on the affected side. The signal intensity ratio of the geniculate ganglion and the tympanic segment was significantly higher on the affected side than on the normal side. Ninety patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer were followed for 1 year. All patients were initially treated with an H2-receptor antagonist. Those with more than two relapses within 1 year received triple therapy consisting of colloidal bismuth subcitrate, amoxicillin, and metronidazole. The efficacy of GM-CSF was investigated in 20 neutropenic patients (< 1500 neutrophils/microliters) with acute visceral leishmaniasis due to Leishmania chagasi. Patients were randomized to receive either GM-CSF, 5 micrograms/kg daily (intravenously or subcutaneously), or placebo for ten days, in combination with pentavalent antimony, 10-20 mg/kg daily for 20 days. Neutrophil counts were significantly greater on days 5 and 10 of treatment in the GM-CSF group compared with the placebo group (p < 0.02). A retrospective analysis of CT and MRI studies in 12 patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) was performed. MRI was the definitive modality for the assessment of the lesions of ADEM: all patients had abnormalities consistent with the clinical diagnosis. Ten had abnormalities in the brain, three spinal cord lesions, and three showed evidence of optic neuritis. CT was normal in 6 of the 7 patients in which it was performed.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in 25 patients with Behçet's disease, of whom 15 had clinical involvement of the central nervous system (CNS). Brain MRI was abnormal in 11/15 with and in 1/10 without CNS involvement. The most common sites of MR lesions were the cerebral white matter and brainstem.
