We present a case of an older patient with toxic chiasmatic optic neuropathy accompanied by bitemporal hemianopia associated with ethambutol use. The patient experienced gradual visual defect recovery that was concurrent with an improvement of chiasmal enhancement in the repeat magnetic resonance imaging performed at his 6-month follow-up. However, his visual field pattern sharply changed to left inferior homonymous quadrantanopia because of a new episode of occipital lobe infarction. After 2 years, the patient's visual function reached the best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in both eyes, a

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a technique used in interventional radiology for the diagnosis of vascular cerebral conditions. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a complication of endovascular procedures that involve atherosclerotic plaque removal with subsequent embolisation. The case is presented on a patient who noticed a sudden vision loss during a DSA. Funduscopy showed retinal pallor and a cherry red spot. The angiography showed a structure suggesting the presence of an embolus in the central retinal artery. The patient was diagnosed with a CRAO, and unsuccessfully trea

Differentiating glaucomatous from nonglaucomatous optic disc cupping remains challenging. We present a case of a 48-year-old woman with an internal carotid aneurysm of approximately 3.5 mm × 6.5 mm that mimicked normal-tension glaucoma. The patient had a 2-year history of low vision acuity in her left eye and frontal oppressive headache. Owing to the carotid aneurysm, she developed an asymmetric vertical cup-to-disc ratio above 0.2, and marked inferotemporal neuronal rim loss and pallor of the residual rim were noted in the left disc. She also developed a visual field defect with an arcuate sc

An 85-year-old male presented with painless bulging lesion over the cornea. Clinical history, diagnostic imaging studies, and histopathologic sections were evaluated. The patient clinically displayed an vascularized conjunctival lesion located at the superior bulbar conjunctiva with extension onto cornea covering 2/3 of his pupillary aperture superiorly. His visual acuity was counting fingers at 4 m. The patient underwent a total excision of the lesion including conjunctival and corneal parts. Histopathologic evaluation revealed spindle cell carcinoma which involves the whole conjunctival squa

A 3-year-old boy presented with severe eye pain and nausea after colliding with a date palm tree branch. Examination under anesthesia revealed a self-sealed corneal laceration and traumatic cataract in his left eye. Cultures were taken and the patient received prophylactic subconjunctival, intravitreal, and systemic antibiotics because of the high risk of endophthalmitis. A thorn from the same tree grew Bacillus cereus. Examination after 2 weeks of the injury revealed a subretinal foreign body (a palm tree thorn), although there were no signs of endophthalmitis or retinal detachment. The patie

BACKGROUND: Euphorbia plants grow in many gardens. Their milky latex is, however, a strong irritant which may induce various ocular lesions from keratoconjunctivitis to severe uveitis.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 86-year-old woman developed a unilateral severe anterior chamber inflammation associated with descemtic folds after direct contact with sap of Euphorbia. Visual acuity was limited to counting fingers. Her eye was operated from filtering surgery ten years previously. The patient was closely followed to rule out the diagnosis of bacterial endophthalmitis.
THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Symptoms progre

A total of 20 patients with unilateral acute optic neuritis were studied. Each patient had experienced the recent onset of a decrease in visual acuity, a relative afferent pupillary defect, a relative or absolute central scotoma and a colour-vision defect. The pattern-reversal electroretinogram (PERG) of each patient was analysed with regard to the amplitude of the positive and negative components. During the acute stage the amplitude of the positive component was reduced in all patients and that of the negative, in 18 of 20 cases. Parallel to clinical recovery, a steady increase was observed

Eleven patients suffering from chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) were investigated by means of electroretinograms (ERG) and visually evoked cortical potentials (VECP) to flash and checkerboard-reversal stimuli. One patient exhibited a Kearns syndrome, in two patients fundoscopy revealed pigmentary retinopathy, and the other eight patients had normal fundi. In the three patients with pigmentary retinopathy the ERGs were slightly disturbed or normal, the P100-latencies in the VECPs being normal. Three out of eight patients without pigmentary changes had reduced ERGs indicating

A 25-year-old woman had a giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) in the nasal fossa during the fifth month of pregnancy. This was treated with a partial excision, but the lesion recurred three months later. By this time, there was extension into the anterior fossa. Because of rapidly decreasing visual acuity, headache, and facial pain, a combined craniofacial approach was undertaken. The lesion encroached on the optic chiasm and a piecemeal, but incomplete, removal of the lesion was performed. The patient spontaneously gave birth to a normal child while in the recovery room. She received no ad

A patient who underwent a cosmetic blepharoplasty suffered a retrobulbar hemorrhage with no light perception deception detected when the dressing was removed two hours postoperatively. Opening the incision site led to the complete return of visual acuity and ocular motility and relief of the proptosis. The rebleeding of cauterized blood vessels may have caused the retrobulbar hemorrhage and seems to be a potential problem in all cosmetic blepharoplasties. Eliminating the use of postoperative bandages may prevent blindness after cosmetic blepharoplasty since it allows early detection of a retro

The last 40 years of clinical experience and investigation of nystagmus in infancy and childhood have resulted in a clearer understanding and characterization of the disorder and provided guidelines for the beneficial effects of increased medical, optical, and surgical treatments. Our modern understanding is due to the results of contribution by scientists and clinicians representing vision, neurology, bioengineering, genetics, and pediatrics. From this group, a new classification system was developed. The routine use of eye-movement recordings (EMR) and its characteristics have made the large

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is characterized by the sudden, painless loss of vision. Typical sonographic and optic coherence tomography (OCT) findings are a retrobulbar spot sign and prominent middle limiting membrane (p-MLM) sign. It remains uncertain whether the retrobulbar spot sign alone or coinciding with the appearance of p-MLM sign is a prognostic marker for visual acuity and the development of secondary retinal ischemia after CRAO. In our prospective cohort study, we included patients with a non-arteritic central artery occlusion < 4 weeks. We examined the following paramet

Retinal arterial occlusion causes acute, painless vision loss, and it requires immediate emergency care. There are two separate arterial systems (retinal and ciliary) in the retina, and in most cases only the central retinal artery and its branches supply blood to the inner retinal layers. Cilioretinal artery is an anatomical variant, which can also supply blood to the macula from the ciliary arterial system, and in the case of a retinal arterial occlusion, the cilioretinal artery could save central vision. We report a case of a 67-year-old woman who suffered a central retinal arterial occlusi
