A thematic analysis of an online discussion forum for people with problematic hoarding behaviours.

BACKGROUND: People with hoarding behaviours (PwHB) need to be able to access a range of support options in a timely manner for their own wellbeing as well as that of friends and family. In response to recent calls to understand more about support groups and the role of peers in relation to hoarding, we investigate an online forum for PwHB. AIMS: To explore the types of messages exchanged on the popular online discussion platform Reddit and the sort of information and support that is available. METHOD: We randomly scraped 100 threads from a hoarding subreddit or subcommunity on Reddit and und

Driving with autism spectrum disorder: Exploring the impact of tactile hazard warnings on gaze behavior and hazard responses.

Autistic people are less likely to obtain a driver's license than neurotypical peers and may face higher collision risks when driving. While advanced driver assistance systems (e.g. hazard warnings) could enhance driving safety for this population, their efficacy remains understudied. In this study, licensed drivers with low and high levels of autistic traits, and non-autistic controls, completed simulated city drives, avoiding pedestrian hazards with and without a vibrotactile warning device. Gaze fixation, braking responses, and subjective workload were compared across warning conditions and

Twelve tips for using image challenges to teach clinical reasoning.

Clinical reasoning is fundamental to safe practice, yet teaching it effectively remains one of the persistent challenges of health-professions education. Image-based challenges-visual material paired with a short clinical vignette-offer an efficient, authentic, and low-cost way to make reasoning visible and to give learners repeated, guided practice. This article offers twelve practical tips for educators who wish to teach clinical reasoning through image challenges. The first tips start from learning objectives, ground the method in reasoning theory and the evidence on observation-based learn

Knowledge coordination in a semi-closed IM network under time-critical conditions: Making distributed expertise actionable.

Semi-closed, cross-organizational instant messaging (IM) environments combine bounded membership with rapid communication across organizational boundaries. Building on research showing that expertise is distributed across professional networks, this study examines how journalists describe the coordination through which dispersed knowledge becomes collectively usable under time-critical conditions. A cross-organizational LINE group comprising Taiwanese television political journalists provides a revelatory case of digitally mediated epistemic coordination. Drawing on qualitative interviews with

Adolescent Cyberviolence in South Korea: A Multi-Year, National Population-Based Study of Cyberviolence Prevalence (2017-2024).

With the rise of digital technology, adolescent cyberviolence has become a growing global concern in public health and criminal justice. This study used nationally representative data from South Korea (2017-2024) to examine the prevalence of eight types of cyberviolence (i.e., verbal abuse, defamation, stalking, sexual abuse, personal information leakage, bullying, extortion and coercion) among adolescents aged 10-18 years. It also analysed differences between sexes, age groups and time periods (i.e., before, during and after COVID-19). The findings showed that male adolescents were generally

Effects of manual therapy on oral opening, swallow function and upper quarter mobility in Chilean survivors of head and neck cancer: a study protocol for a controlled, randomised study (MAnual ThErapy for Oral Opening (MATEO) study).

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancer (HNC) accounts for over 4% of global cancer incidence, yet the oncological treatment induces several sequelae such as oral dysfunction, cervical and shoulder impairments or pain that are not well addressed. Thus, survivors of HNC (sHNC) perceive a decrease in their quality of life (QoL). This study protocol aims to investigate the effects of manual therapy (MT) to determine the effectiveness and safety on oral opening, swallow function and upper quarter mobility, cervical muscle strength, pain, functionality and QoL of sHNC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A randomise

Disparity in school children's reading skills in 11 African countries.

To promote SDG Goal 4 and "education for all", this study investigates children's basic reading skills in 11 low-income and lower-middle-income African countries, using standardized reading tests from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). Research specifically examining children's reading skills and disparities across socioeconomic groups in African contexts remains scarce. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by providing comparative evidence on reading skills disparities across diverse social backgrounds, including children with disabilities. Our study provides new evidence

Co-Development of a Group-Based Parenting Program for Parents of Youth in Psychiatric Residential Treatment.

Youth in psychiatric residential treatment (RT) are a highly vulnerable population in which parent involvement is critical to optimizing long-term outcomes. However, existing parent programs rarely address the unique challenges faced by families navigating RT. This study aimed to identify parent support needs and develop an adapted parenting program, Parenting Wisely for RT (PWRT). Using qualitative interviews with parents and input from an RT staff advisory board, we explored the informational, instructional, and emotional support needs of families with youth in RT. Findings guided the develo

Identifying factors related to longitudinal viral load patterns among people living with HIV.

Durable HIV viral suppression is the primary goal of initiatives aimed at ending the HIV epidemic. This study (1) identified viral suppression patterns over a four-year period, and (2) determined the association of viral suppression patterns with demographic characteristics. This study was a retrospective observational analysis of insurance claims data of 2,677 members of a New York City managed care plan who were living with HIV (PLWH). Using cluster analysis, five distinct viral suppression patterns were identified: consistently unsuppressed (15%), became unsuppressed (12%), fluctuated (16%)

Reading language of the eyes in female depression.

Aberrations in non-verbal social cognition have been reported to coincide with major depressive disorder. Yet little is known about the role of the eyes. To fill this gap, the present study explores whether and, if so, how reading language of the eyes is altered in depression. For this purpose, patients and person-by-person matched typically developing individuals were administered the Emotions in Masked Faces task and Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, modified, both of which contained a comparable amount of visual information available. For achieving group homogeneity, we set a focus on fema

The Changing Relationship Between Hobby Engagement and Substance Use in Young People: Latent Growth Modelling of the Add Health Cohort.

Cross-sectional and some longitudinal evidence suggests doing hobbies can reduce substance use, but findings have been inconsistent, and whether associations differ across adolescence remains unclear. This study included 7454 Add Health participants (50% female, 77% White, age mean=14.95 and SD = 1.56). Participants were split into three groups, according to whether they were early (aged 11-14 at baseline), mid (aged 15-16), or late (aged 17-20) adolescents at baseline. The trajectories of binge drinking, marijuana, and tobacco use were analysed in latent growth models across Waves 1-5 (1994-2

Sociodemographic Factors Associated with Suicide Outcomes in Transgender and Gender Diverse Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations have a higher prevalence of suicide outcomes compared to cisgender peers. Further, among TGD groups, young adults frequently demonstrate a higher risk compared to other age cohorts. While evidence supports sociodemographic differences in suicide risk, these relationships are not well-established for TGD young adults. METHOD: A secondary data analysis of the young adult (18-24 years) subpopulation of the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey was conducted. Predicted probabilities of 12-month and lifetime suicide outcomes by gender identity, se

LGBTQ+ outpatients present to eating disorder treatment earlier and with more severe depressive symptoms than cisgender heterosexual peers.

Community evidence indicates high eating disorder (ED) and comorbid symptom severity among LGBTQ+ compared to cisgender heterosexual (CH) individuals. Little is known about such disparities in ED treatment samples, especially in outpatient treatment. We aimed to descriptively characterize and investigate baseline group differences in symptom severity between LGBTQ+ and CH ED outpatients at treatment intake. Data from 60 (22.3%) LGBTQ+ and 209 (77.7%) CH ED outpatients were used to examine: (1) demographic and diagnostic differences; (2) differences in ED, depressive, and emotion dysregulation

Walking Behaviour of Individuals with Intermittent Claudication Compared to Matched Controls in Different Locations: An Exploratory Study.

Individuals with intermittent claudication (IC) are less physically active than their peers, but how this varies with location is unclear. Individuals with IC and matched controls [sex, age ±5 years, home < 5 miles] wore an activity monitor (activPAL) and carried a GPS device (AMOD-AGL3080) for 7 days. GPS data categorised walking events as occurring at home (<=50 m from home co-ordinates) or away from home, and indoors (signal to noise ratio <= 212 dB) or outdoors. Number of walking events, walking duration, steps and cadence were compared between groups and each location pair using mixed mod
