OBJECTIVE: To introduce a method of the surgical correction of Poland's syndrome in children.
METHODS: From May 1990 to May 2002, 3 female children with Poland's syndrome were treated. One child of 12 years old with defects of the right second and third costal cartilages, pectoralis major and pectoralis minor underwent repair of chest wall with graft of autologous costal cartilage from left sixth costal cartilage and transfer of the latissimus dorsi flap. A 72-year-old woman visited our hospital to clarify the etiology of pain, swelling and ulceration of the right large vulva labium. Rectal cancer and pulmonary metastatic tumor were detected, and the rectal cancer was resected. Biopsy from the right vulva labium revealed that the vulvar tumor was a metastatic cancer originating from rectal cancer. Our patient underwent regional resection of the right vulva labium and the area lacking tissue was covered by a rhomboid transposition flap. Our patient experienced necrosis of the tip of the flap and the wound was healed by secondary intention.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the symmetry in lip height and lip width after extended Mohler unilateral cleft lip repair, with long-term follow-up monitoring. The use of conjoint flaps based on the dorsalis pedis artery enabled a transfer of 3 free flaps-dorsalis pedis flap, fillet flap of the second toe, and trimmed large toe-to reconstruct a severely traumatized hand in a 12-year-old girl. High-voltage electrical burn injury had caused a large wound over the volar wrist and exposed the flexor tendons and median/ulnar nerves. In addition, she suffered a partial loss of the thumb and had an open wound at the base of the index finger. The application of the conjoint flaps restored hand function in a one-stage procedure.
