Effects of Electrolyzed Functional Water Combined with Modified Atmosphere Storage on Postharvest Quality of Arrow Bamboo Shoots.

Postharvest lignification and microbial spoilage limit the shelf life of arrow bamboo shoots. This study evaluated the effects of electrolyzed functional water (EFW) combined with spontaneous modified-atmosphere (MA) packaging (EFW+MA) on postharvest quality and associated physiological, metabolic, and microbial changes. EFW+MA reduced weight loss, decay incidence, and browning while maintaining firmness and color. It also reduced lignin and cellulose accumulation, accompanied by lower activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). Untargeted l

Enhancing wood composite materials with formaldehyde-removing microcapsules featuring long-lasting, slow-release, and environmentally benign characteristics.

The long-term emission of free formaldehyde from plywood is a common problem, and the addition of formaldehyde capture agents typically reduces the plywood bonding performance. In this paper, melamine(ME)@sodium alginate (SA)/ethyl cellulose (EC) double-shell microcapsules (MEM) were prepared for the first time by the sol-gel method. The preparation process was optimized by response surface methodology via Box-Behnken design, and the results were highly reliable. MEM showed good spheroidizing properties, and its coating rate reached 71.97%. When 8% MEM was added to plywood, the emission of for

Superoxide Dismutase-Centered Modulation by Curcumin in Cardiovascular Diseases: Mechanistic Insights and Translational Implications.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading global cause of morbidity and mortality, driven in part by dysregulated redox homeostasis and chronic inflammation. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a key enzymatic defence against reactive oxygen species (ROS), plays a central role in maintaining cardiovascular integrity through regulation of oxidative stress across cytosolic (SOD1), mitochondrial (SOD2) and extracellular (SOD3) compartments. Impairment of SOD function contributes directly to endothelial dysfunction, myocardial injury and vascular remodelling. Curcumin (Cur), a pleiotropic polypheno

Molecular dynamics and free energy analysis of curcumin binding near the DNA-recognition interface of NF-κB.

Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound derived from Curcuma longa, is widely reported to modulate NF-κB signaling, primarily through indirect effects on upstream regulatory pathways. However, residue-level information on possible curcumin association near structurally relevant regions of NF-κB remains limited. Here, we investigated the predicted binding behavior of curcumin near the DNA-recognition region of the NF-κB p50 homodimer using molecular docking, 100 ns all-atom molecular dynamics simulation, and MM-PBSA free-energy analysis. Docking with the p50 homodimer model derived from PDB I

Green, Formaldehyde-Free Bio-Adhesive from Soybean Meal and Laccase-Oxidized Tannin via Quinone-Amine Crosslinking.

To develop a fully green and non-toxic wood adhesive with improved water resistance and bonding performance for soybean meal (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)-based adhesives, oxidized tannin (OTN) was obtained by the laccase treatment of waxberry tannin (TN), a natural polyphenolic polymer, and then blended with soybean meal (SM) to prepare an oxidized tannin-soybean meal adhesive (OTS). Laccase-mediated oxidation converted the tannin polymer into quinone-rich oxidized polymeric structures, which reacted with amino groups in soybean meal proteins through Michael addition and Schiff base reactions to f

Folate receptor-targeted PEGylated PLGA nanoparticles for the site-specific delivery of hesperidin in epithelial ovarian cancer.

Hesperidin (HSP) is a polyphenolic compound employed widely in the therapy of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). However, the low bioavailability, attributed to first-pass metabolism, low dissolution and poor tumour specificity, hampered its clinical effectiveness. Therefore, HSP-loaded folic acid-PEGylated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (HSP-PEGylated PLGA FA NPs) were synthesized to improve dissolution and target specificity of HSP for the management of EOC. The NPs were synthesized by nanoprecipitation and assessed for entrapment efficiency, particle size, scanning electro

From brain to body: sinapic acid prevents multi-organ damage post-traumatic brain injury in mice.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a critical neurological condition that severely affects the brain and extracranial organs. Secondary damages such as BBB disruption, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the brain can induce systemic pathophysiological changes in multiple organs, primarily in the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys, known as Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS). Systemic hyperinflammation, autonomic dysfunction, and immunosuppression collectively play a crucial role in the progression of MODS. The current study aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of the polyphenoli

Assembly of Bioactive Superstructures via Metal-Phenolic Complexation for Blood Purification.

Hyperbilirubinemia, which stems from bilirubin accumulation caused by liver failure, can lead to jaundice, multi-organ damage, and mortality. Hemoperfusion is the most effective detoxification approach, and its efficacy critically depends on the adsorbent system. However, most developed adsorbents exhibit poor hemocompatibility, posing risks of coagulation and bacterial infection. Herein, we report a facile and highly biocompatible strategy to fabricate bioactive superstructures for blood purification, enabling toxin removal. The formation of the bioactive superstructures is mediated by the as

Calcium Carbonate-based Microencapsulation Suppresses Thermal Oxidative Degradation and Enhances the Cellular Activity of Resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a bioactive polyphenol with well-established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; however, its practical application is severely limited by poor aqueous solubility and rapid degradation under thermal and oxidative conditions. In this study, we developed a calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-based microencapsulation system (Resvera-CC) to enhance the stability of resveratrol through mineral confinement. The formulation enables efficient loading of resveratrol within CaCO3 microparticles, forming an inorganic-organic hybrid microcarrier system. Physicochemical characterization demo
