A functional human liver tissue model: 3D bioprinted co-culture discoids.

To reduce costs and delays related to developing new and effective drugs, there is a critical need for improved human liver tissue models. Here we describe an approach for 3D bioprinting functional human liver tissue models, in which we fabricate disc-shaped structures (discoids) 200 μm in thickness and 1-3 mm in diameter from mixtures of cells and collagen-1, embedded in a highly permeable support medium made from packed polyethylene glycol (PEG) microgels. We demonstrate that the method is precise, accurate, and scalable; up to 100 tissues/h can be manufactured with a variability and error i…

Cellulose nanofibrils-based emulgels: Impact on surface film formation and performance as slow-release fertilizers.

Conventional slow-release fertilizers often suffer from poor structural control and inefficient nutrient release, leading to environmental pollution and resource waste. To address this challenge, we developed a biphasic emulgel system that combines chloroform (CHCl₃)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) droplets stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)/nanochitin (NCh) as the oil phase with a CNF/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) gel matrix containing hydrophilic particles. During 3D printing through low-surface-energy nozzles, shear forces trigger spontaneous phase separation, driving PLA to form a continuous sur…

Multimodal bioprinting of pigmented skin with algorithm-tuned control.

This study addresses critical technical challenges in fabricating functional pigmented skin models via 3D bioprinting through the synergistic integration of droplet-based deposition and precision motion control. A hybrid bioprinting strategy was developed to create multilayer biomimetic architectures: the dermal layer was fabricated through extrusion of gelatin methacryloyl-polyacrylamide (GelMA-PAM) composites, while the epidermal layer incorporated precisely patterned melanocyte-laden GelMA-PAM arrays deposited via microvalve technology, subsequently solidified and populated with keratinocyt…

Is bracket bonding with guided bonding devices accurate enough for crowded dentition?

BACKGROUND: This research aimed to study whether bracket bonding using guided bonding devices (GBDs) is accurate enough for crowded dentitions in vitro. METHODS: Fifteen three-dimensionally (3D) printed resin model sets were included and divided into three groups: mild, moderate, and severe crowding. The resin models were scanned and virtually bonded with brackets. Corresponding GBDs were generated and 3D printed. Subsequently, the brackets were bonded to the resin models on a dental mannequin using the GBDs. The models with bonded brackets were scanned, and comparisons were made between the

Ankle and Distal Tibia Megaprostheses in Orthopedic Oncology: A Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: The distal tibia is one of the rarest sites for the onset of malignant and locally aggressive bone tumors. When diagnosed, these lesions should undergo surgical resection with wide margins to eradicate the disease. In the era of limb-sparing surgery, several reconstructive approaches have been proposed and described in modern literature for reconstructing the distal tibia and the ankle. The 3D-printed custom-made prostheses represent an innovative and promising reconstructive option. Several authors highlighted that despite being expensive and prone to some complications such as ta

Biomimetic Porous Ti6Al4V Implants: A Novel Interbody Fusion Cage via Gel-Casting Technique to Promote Spine Fusion.

An interbody fusion cage (Cage) is crucial in spinal decompression and fusion procedures for restoring normal vertebral curvature and rebuilding spinal stability. Currently, these Cages suffer from issues related to mismatched elastic modulus and insufficient bone integration capability. Therefore, a gel-casting technique is utilized to fabricate a biomimetic porous titanium alloy material from Ti6Al4V powder. The biomimetic porous Ti6Al4V is compared with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and 3D-printed Ti6Al4V materials and their respective Cages. Systematic validation is performed through mechani

3D Bioprinting of Sugar Beet Pectin through Horseradish Peroxidase-Catalyzed Cross-Linking.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated hydrogelation, caused by the cross-linking of phenolic groups in polymers in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), is an effective route for bioink solidification in 3D bioprinting. Sugar beet pectin (SBP) naturally has cross-linkable phenols through the enzymatic reaction. Therefore, chemical modifications are not required, unlike the various polymers that have been used in the enzymatic cross-linking system. In this study, we report the application of SBP in extrusion-based bioprinting including HRP-mediated bioink solidification. In this system, H2O…

4D Bioprinting via Molecular Network Contraction for Membranous Tissue Fabrication.

Generation of thin membranous tissues (TMT), such as the cornea, epidermis, and periosteum, presents a difficult fabrication challenge in tissue engineering (TE). TMTs consist of several cell layers that are less than 100 µm in thickness per layer. While traditional methods provide the necessary resolution for TMT fabrication, they require significant handling and incorporation of several layers is limited. Extrusion bioprinting offers precise control over deposition of different biomaterials and cell populations within the same construct but lacks the resolution to generate biomimetic TMTs. F…

Engineering highly-aligned three-dimensional (3D) cardiac constructs for enhanced myocardial infarction repair.

Native myocardium exhibits well-organized cellular orientations and highly vascularized architectures, which is important for tissue survival and synchronic contraction activities. Mimicking such structural organizations to engineer functional cardiac constructs is a promising approach to treat myocardial infarctionin vivo. Here we propose a novel strategy to engineer highly-aligned three-dimensional (3D) cardiac constructs by co-culturing cardiomyocytes and rat aortic endothelial cells (RAECs) along with native extracellular matrix-derived fibrin within electrohydrodynamic-printed microfibrou
