Cognitive impairment is characterized by reduced cognitive abilities in one or more areas such as language, memory, and reasoning. It is a common problem in various neurological diseases and the aging process, seriously affecting people's quality of life and overall health. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a hormone regulating glucose/lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis, exhibits neuroprotective properties. To investigate the impact and mechanism of endogenous deletion of FGF21 on cognitive function, FGF21 knockout mice and wild-type mice were used. Different behavioral paradigms were

Human activities give rise to plenty of environmental zinc accumulation which leads to various health problems in many kinds of organisms. Deleterious effects of zinc contamination on zebrafish have been reported, however, studies associated with sex-specific neurobehavior phenotypes and physiological mechanisms are limited. The present study investigated behavioral and physiological divergence between male and female zebrafish exposure to environment-related zinc chloride (1.0 or 1.5 mg/L). Our results showed that zinc exposure exerted neurobehavior toxicity in a sex-specific manner and alter

Substance use disorder, as a high-risk behavior in adolescence, can underlie other high-risk behaviors, such as suicide, sexual risk behaviors, and violence. The initial step in implementing an effective program is to identify the underlying factors and assess the relevant context. Therefore, the current research aimed to gain deep insight into the sociocultural factors that contribute to high-risk behaviors in adolescent girls with substance use disorders. The present study was conducted with a qualitative approach and with conventional content analysis methodology. The participants consisted

Previous research indicates that youth exhibiting antisocial behavior are at risk for utilizing a disproportionate amount of health services compared to youth without these problems. The present study investigates whether being processed by the juvenile justice system and showing callous-unemotional (CU) traits independently predict health service utilization (medical and mental health service use and out-of-home placement) over and above the severity of antisocial behavior across adolescence. A total of 766 participants who had been arrested for the first time in adolescence provided data at

This study aimed to characterize self-reported headaches because of problems with the teeth, mouth, jaws, or dentures (HATMJD) in chronic patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in order to compare their results with those of TMD patients without such headaches and to investigate the associations of HATMJD with depression, anxiety, physical symptoms, oral behaviors, and sleep quality. We conducted a case-control study on consecutive chronic TMD patients referred to the University Medical Center of Ljubljana, Slovenia. A self-reported HATMJD was extracted from item #12 in the 49-item v

OBJECTIVE: Research on warning signs, defined as acute risk factors for suicide or suicide attempt, has been slow due to the difficulty of examining the hours and minutes preceding suicidal behavior. This study sought to identify new warning signs and to re-examine warning signs that have been proposed.
METHOD: Narrative stories of adult patients with substance use problems hospitalized following a suicide attempt were transcribed. The narrative segments describing the 24-h period prior to suicide attempt were examined with directed qualitative content analysis using codes based on prior lite

Reports of behavioral disturbance in Juvenile-Onset Huntington's Disease (JOHD) have been based primarily on qualitative caregiver reports or retrospective medical record reviews. This study aims to quantify differences in behavior in patients with JOHD using informant- and self-report questionnaires. Informants of 21 children/young adults (12 female) with JOHD and 115 children/young adults (64 female) with a family history of Huntington's Disease, but who did not inherit the disease themselves (Gene-Non-Expanded; GNE) completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) and t

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders diagnosed in children below the age of 12 years. It is characterized by hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsive behavior. ADHD affects the social, academic, and psychological aspects of children and adolescents. Children with ADHD struggle with school tasks and performance. They have lower grades than their peers and have difficulties interacting with their friends. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a mental disorder characterized by disruptive behavior, a pattern of angry and irritable mood, argu

BACKGROUND: Health risk behaviors during adolescence may cluster into patterns that might be predicted by specific factors, among which HIV may have an important role.
METHOD: In a cross-sectional study conducted between 2017 and 2018, clustering of HRB and its associated factors was investigated in rural Kenya among 588 adolescents (36% perinatally HIV infected; 28% perinatally HIV exposed but uninfected; and 36% HIV unexposed/uninfected). Latent class analysis of 22 behaviors followed by multinomial logistic regression were conducted. Four risk behavior classes were identified.
RESULTS: No

Pseudohypoparathyroidism 1A (PHP1A) is a rare, genetic disorder. Most patients with PHP1A have cognitive impairment but this has not been systematically studied. We hypothesized that children with PHP1A would have lower intelligent quotient (IQ) scores than controls. To evaluate cognition and behavior, we prospectively enrolled children with PHP1A, one unaffected sibling (when available) and controls matched on BMI/age/gender/race. Evaluations included cognitive and executive function testing. Parents completed questionnaires on behavior and executive function. We enrolled 16 patients with PHP

INTRODUCTION: People with substance use problems have a higher prevalence of modifiable health risk behaviors. Routine clinician provision of preventive care may be effective in reducing such health behaviors. This study aimed to examine clinician provision of preventive care to clients of community substance use treatment services.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken with 386 clients and 54 clinicians of community substance use treatment services in one health district in New South Wales, Australia. Client- and clinician-reported provision of three elements of care (assessment,

Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), a manualized evidence-based intervention, was originally developed to treat disruptive behavior problems in children aged 2–6 years. It is also considered to be an evidence-based intervention for physical abuse among children. Moreover, PCIT has proved to be effective for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and depression. Thus, it could become the first evidence-based, transdiagnostic intervention method for 2–6-year-old children. PCIT is based on attachment theory as well as learning theory,

Nutritional and social environmental problems during the early stages of life are closely associated with the pathophysiology of mood disorders such as depression. Disruption or dysfunction of the central norepinephrine (NE) system is also considered to play a role in mood disorders. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of zinc deficiency and/or social isolation on mood and changes in the central NE system using rats. Compared with the controls, the rats subjected to zinc deficiency or social isolation alone exhibited increased anxiety-related behavior in the elevated plus maze and greater depr

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is prevalent in dental clinics and can involve problems with the masticatory muscles or the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). The pain of TMD is frequently associated with inflammation in the TMJs, but it's etiology is considered to be multifactorial and includes biologic, behavioral, environmental, social, emotional and cognitive factors. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the anxiety-like behavior in rats exposed to temporomandibular inflammation via injection of Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) with the elevated plus maze (EPM) and light/dark box (LDB) t

Classical behavioral tests in animal models of trigeminal neuropathic pain measure reflexive responses that are not necessarily measures of pain. To overcome the problem, we created a chronic constrictive nerve injury (CCI) rat model of pain by ligation of the infraorbital nerve (ION), and applied the orofacial operant test to assess behavioral responses to mechanical and cold stimulation in these rats. Animals were trained to voluntarily contact their facial region to a mechanical or a cold stimulation module in order to access sweetened milk as a positive reward. ION-CCI rats displayed avers

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep problems are frequent and disabling in patients with Parkinson's disease. Recent data provide major advances in the mechanisms and consequences of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders, insomnia and narcolepsy-like daytime sleepiness.
RECENT FINDINGS: A large series confirms that rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders may precede parkinsonism or dementia (particuarly, but not exclusively, Lewy bodies dementia) for several years. In Parkinson's disease, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders expose patients to higher risks of dementia and hallucinations

Speeding is a major contributor to motor vehicle accidents, which are the leading cause of death in adolescents. This study compares the extent to which adolescents with gambling behavior and substance use reported driving over the posted speed limits ("speeding"). Florida adolescents ages 13-17 (n = 1051) were surveyed, and asked about gambling activities, problems related to gambling, substance use, demographic questions, and speeding. Of the 562 respondents who were drivers, the gender distribution was 52.1% male and 47.9% female. Of those respondents, 76.9% were Caucasian, 6.8% were Africa
