Exploring the impact of excessive daytime sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea on patient and partner quality of life: a time trade-off utility study in the UK general public.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to quantify the impact of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) on patient and patient's partner health-related quality of life in the form of utility values typically used in health economic evaluations. METHODS: A time trade-off study was conducted in a UK general population sample (representing a societal perspective) to elicit utility values, measured on a 0 to 1 scale, for health states with varying obstructive sleep apnea-associated EDS severity. In a time trade-off study, health states are described, and participants "trade off" time in a specific higher

Screening for obstructive sleep apnea in an Afro-Caribbean Population: Diagnostic performance of common questionnaires compared with respiratory polygraphy - The MASOS Study A prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a major public health issue. Its prevalence is likely underestimated in many parts of the world, and experts project a substantial future increase. In settings with limited access to diagnostic tools, clinical screening questionnaires may improve the efficiency of patient management. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the main OSAHS screening questionnaires in an Afro-Caribbean population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study, in a high-risk population of patients refe

From passive monitoring to active engagement: a systematic review and meta-analysis of digital health technologies for improving objective physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a critical factor exacerbating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its associated comorbidities. Previous evidence has largely relied on subjective questionnaires, leading to a lack of definitive evidence based on objective measurements. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of digital health interventions (DHIs) on objective physical activity, body composition, and sleep parameters in OSA patients, while further exploring the efficacy differences between active intervention and passive monitoring modes. METHODS: A systematic search was condu

Efficacy and safety of GLP-1 receptor agonists in the management of obstructive sleep apnea in individuals without diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep. While continuous positive airway pressure therapy is the standard treatment, poor adherence has led to exploration of alternative treatments. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been shown to reduce body weight and may help manage OSA. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of GLP-1 RAs in individuals with OSA and elevated body weight who are without diabetes. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in September 2024 across

[Protocol for the management of obstructive sleep apnea by Primary Care using the STOP-Bang questionnaire and simplified diagnosis methods as screening tools in the region of Osona, Central Catalonia (Barcelona)].

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a widespread disease, but usually is an underdiagnosed and undertreated public health problem. Nowadays its study is expensive. Collaboration and involvement of all specialties are necessary, also the implementation of simplified diagnostic methods to try to improve detection, increase the diagnosis and treatment ratio. In the Osona region (Barcelona), it has been developed a protocol that defines a new care process that shortens and reduces the cost of the OSA's diagnosis process. This new care process also favors better knowledge of the pathology of OSA by al

Benchmarking inflammation-nutrition and TyG-related indices for 5-year mortality risk in adults with questionnaire-defined obstructive sleep apnea: a survey-weighted NHANES derivation cohort with multicenter external validation.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with excess mortality, and readily obtainable biomarkers may support pragmatic risk stratification in OSA, but their comparative and incremental value remains uncertain. We benchmarked inflammation-nutrition indices and TyG-related metabolic indices for mortality risk in adults with questionnaire-defined OSA and evaluated whether these markers improve 5-year all-cause mortality prediction beyond a basic clinical model. METHODS: We analysed 3,503 adults with questionnaire-defined OSA from the NHANES 2005-2008 and 2015-2018 derivation coho

Temporal changes in obstructive sleep apnea severity and body composition parameters during 6-month tofogliflozin administration in patients with heart failure and type 2 diabetes mellitus: a TOPARDS-HF substudy.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is closely associated with obesity and fluid retention. Our previous study suggested that, in patients with heart failure, the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, tofogliflozin, promotes diuresis and weight loss and improves OSA severity. However, whether changes in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) are chronologically associated with body composition parameters remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 10 patients (six men) with OSA. They received tofogliflozin (20 mg) daily for 6 months. The AHI was assessed using WatchPAT® at baseline, 3, and 6 months.

Strategies to Assess the Effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Long-Term Clinically Important Outcomes among Patients with Symptomatic Obstructive Sleep Apnea: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Although CPAP improves symptoms (e.g., daytime sleepiness), there is a lack of high-quality evidence that CPAP prevents many long-term outcomes, including cognitive impairment, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Observational studies suggest that patients with symptoms may be particularly likely to experience these preventive benefits with CPAP, but ethical and practical concerns limited the participation of such patients in prior long-term randomized trials. As a result, there is uncertai
