The mental health impact of 9/11 on inner-city high school students 20 miles north of Ground Zero.

PURPOSE: To determine the rate of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after 9/11 in a sample of New York City high school students and associations among personal exposure, loss of psychosocial resources, prior mental health treatment, and PTSD. METHODS: A total of 1214 students (grades 9 through 12) attending a large community high school in Bronx County, 20 miles north of "Ground Zero," completed a 45-item questionnaire during gym class on one day eight months after 9/11. Students were primarily Hispanic (62%) and African American (29%) and lived in the surrounding neighborhood. The quest

A systematic review of prevention and intervention strategies for populations at high risk of engaging in violent behaviour: update 2002-8.

BACKGROUND: It has been estimated that violence accounts for more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide each year and these fatal assaults represent only a fraction of all assaults that actually occur. The problem has widespread consequences for the individual and for the wider society in physical, psychological, social and economic terms. A wide range of pharmacological, psychosocial and organisational interventions have been developed with the aim of addressing the problem. This review was designed to examine the effectiveness of these interventions when they are developed in mental health and c

Severe Maternal Morbidity Associated With Chronic Hypertension, Preeclampsia, and Gestational Hypertension.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic hypertension and preeclampsia are leading risk enhancers for maternal-neonatal morbidity and mortality. Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) indicators include heart, kidney, and liver disease, but studies have not excluded patients with preexisting diseases that define SMM. Thus, SMM risks for uncomplicated chronic hypertension specific to preeclampsia remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine SMM rates and estimate relative risks associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy among patients with and without chronic hypertension unencumbered by preexisting vascular or end o

Prevalence and Predictors of Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms Among International Medical Students in China During COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: The rapid spread of Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) infection has been the most important public health crisis across the globe since the end of 2019. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems among people during the pandemic, and many studies have reported anxiety and depressive symptoms in college students. However, information on the mental health status of international medical students during this critical period of time has been scarce, which hinders the efforts in making proper policy or strategies to help these students. The present study aims to e

Health-related quality of life and functional outcomes from a randomized, controlled study of lisdexamfetamine dimesylate in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aims not only to ameliorate patients' symptoms, but also to improve health-related quality of life (HRQL) and functioning. A pivotal, 7-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase III study in children and adolescents in ten European countries demonstrated that the stimulant prodrug lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX) is an effective and generally well-tolerated treatment for symptoms of ADHD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess HRQL and functional impairment outcomes in this clinical tria

[Distinction, limits and complementarity between efficacy and effectiveness studies: new perspectives for psychotherapy research].

Perron et al. (2004) criticize the collective expertise conducted by the INSERM on the efficacy of different psychotherapy methods for different mental disorders. They say the work is biased in favour of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (CBT), while there is a negative bias regarding other methods, in particular psychodynamic therapies. Philippe Cialdella, a specialist of methodology and quantitative analysis in psychiatry, exposes an counter-argument in 10 points and brings welcome clarifications on the methodology and statistics. There is neither statistical bias in the INSERM report (whic

A primary care-public health partnership addressing homelessness, serious mental illness, and health disparities.

BACKGROUND: People with histories of homelessness and serious mental illness experience profound health disparities. Housing First is an evidenced-based practice that is working to end homelessness for these individuals through a combination of permanent housing and community-based supports. METHODS: The Jefferson Department of Family and Community Medicine and a Housing First agency, Pathways to Housing-PA, has formed a partnership to address multiple levels of health care needs for this group. We present a preliminary program evaluation of this partnership using the framework of the patient

Prosocial and Aggressive Behavior: A Longitudinal Study.

Developmental theorists have made strong claims about the fundamental prosocial or aggressive nature of the human infant. However, only rarely have prosocial behavior and aggression been studied together in the same sample. We charted the parallel development of both behaviors from infancy to childhood in a British community sample, using a two-construct, multimethod longitudinal design. Data were drawn from the Cardiff Child Development Study (CCDS), a prospective longitudinal study of a volunteer sample of parents and their firstborn children. A sample of 332 mothers was recruited from Natio

Parental Perspectives and Experiences of Working With Speech and Language Therapists to Support Home Practice for Their Child With a Speech Sound Disorder: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is broadly defined as difficulty producing speech sounds in childhood. It can have a lasting impact on academic outcomes and well-being, making effective early intervention vital. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) consider parental involvement-particularly supporting their child with home practice-as essential to a child's progress. Relationships between SLTs and parents are known to facilitate this engagement. However, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding parents' perspectives, and little is known about what parents perceive to be

ECNP consensus meeting. Bipolar depression. Nice, March 2007.

DSM-IV, specifically its text revision DSM-IV-TR, remains the preferred diagnostic system. When employed in general population samples, prevalence estimates of bipolar disorder are relatively consistent across studies in Europe and USA. In community studies, first onset of bipolar mood disorder is usually in the mid-teenage years and twenties, and the occurrence of a major depressive episode or hypomania is usually its first manifestation. Since reliable criteria for delineating unipolar (UP) and bipolar (BI) depression cross-sectionally are currently lacking, there is a longitudinal risk - pr

New Psychoactive Substances and receding COVID-19 pandemic: really going back to "normal"?

To the Editor, The ongoing rise of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), i.e. psychotropic molecules devised and synthesized to replicate the effects of traditional drugs of abuse in order to circumvent banned substances schedules, has been posing a challenge of enormous magnitude to substance detection systems and law enforcement worldwide. Still, it would be remiss to ignore the role played by the unprecedented public health emergency relating to the COVID-19 pandemic in the exacerbation of the NPS crisis. The diversion of resources has in fact hindered conventional approaches to drug monitorin

The international initiatives of the collaboration between the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine, the Panhellenic Medical Association and the World Psychiatric Association, concerning mental health during the COVID-19 outbreak.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, all European countries were hit, but mortality rates were heterogenous, with some countries being hit very hard, while others including Greece had a much lower death rate during the first wave of spring 2020. The ultra-fast application of measures was probably the reason of this outstanding success. This outbreak is expected to trigger feelings of fear, worry, and stress, as responses to an extreme threat for the community and the individual. In addition, changes in social behavior, as well as in working conditions, daily habits and rout

The effect of explosive remnants of war on global public health: a systematic mixed-studies review using narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Explosive remnants of war (ERW)-landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and abandoned explosive ordnance (AXO)-have been recognised as a threat to health since the 1990s. We aimed to study the effect of ERW on global public health. METHODS: In this systematic mixed-studies review, we searched the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and ProQuest databases, and hand searched relevant websites, for articles published between Jan 1, 1990, and Aug 31, 2015. We used keywords and Medical Subject Headings related to ERW, landmines, UXO, and AXO to locate original peer-reviewed quantitative, qua
