Congo basin peatlands as coupled human-natural systems: a multidisciplinary data framework for vulnerability and resilience assessment.

Peatlands in the Congo Basin are not only critical ecological assets for carbon storage, hydrological regulation and biodiversity conservation; they are also deeply embedded in social, cultural and governance systems. Their sustainability therefore depends on their recognition as complex social-ecological systems, shaped by long-standing interactions between communities, customary institutions and natural processes. Yet, despite growing scientific attention, the vulnerability and resilience dynamics of these systems remain insufficiently understood. This study applies a multidisciplinary, syst

Evaluating a targeted selective speech, language, and communication intervention at scale - Protocol for the Happy Talk cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In areas of social disadvantage up to 40-50% of children enter preschool with speech and language skills significantly poorer than would be expected for their age. The Happy Talk trial tests if a community embedded, targeted selective speech and language programme that simultaneously engages with parents and early childhood educators, (1) improves language outcomes in children aged between 2 years 10 months and 6 years and (2) is cost effective for the health care system. METHOD: The Happy Talk trial is a large scale cluster randomised trial of a 12-week manualised intervention de

Growing in the Shadow of Mental Illness: Quality of Life, Health Status, Social Functioning, and Health Care Utilization Among Adults to Parents With Severe Mental Illness.

INTRODUCTION: Adults who grow up with a parent with severe mental illness are exposed to prolonged developmental adversity, yet little is known about how this experience shapes multidimensional outcomes in adulthood. In particular, the roles of personal adaptive resources, childhood trauma, parental bonding, and morbidity in influencing quality of life, social functioning, and healthcare utilization remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine the relationships between personal adaptive resources (resilience and general self-efficacy), childhood experiences (trauma and parenta

The Impact of Social Media on Eating Disorder Risk and Self-Esteem Among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Psychosocial Analysis in Individuals Aged 16-25.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) result from complex interactions of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors, disproportionately affecting adolescents and young adults. Social media, peer pressure, and self-esteem issues contribute to ED prevalence. This study examines ED risk, eating behaviors, and self-esteem among individuals aged 16-25, exploring differences by gender, age, and social media usage. METHODS: A total of 261 participants (113 high school students, 115 college students, 33 working individuals) completed the Computer-Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) be

A qualitative inquiry into the patient-related barriers to linkage and retention in HIV care within the community setting.

BACKGROUND: People with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PWH) experience barriers to care within the community that impedes their progress from when they discover that they are HIV positive to becoming virally suppressed. For individuals with HIV to achieve sustained viral suppression, they must be linked to care to start receiving anti-retroviral therapy and remain retained in care for continuous treatment. However, HIV surveillance data shows that many PWH are not linked to care and become lost to continuous follow-up care. Although pharmacists, PWH, and social workers interact with one ano

Village health volunteers' social capital related to their performance in Lao People's Democratic Republic: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Improving the performance of community health workers (CHWs) is a global issue. The relationship between CHWs and their community may impact their performance. In Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), CHW are called village health volunteers (VHV). Lao PDR has a problem with VHV inactivity, especially in rural areas. This study focused on which aspects of social capital are related to VHV performance. METHODS: This research represents a cross-sectional study with a quantitative survey based primarily on interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Interviews were conduc

A simulation analysis to characterize the dynamics of vaccinating behaviour on contact networks.

BACKGROUND: Human behavior influences infectious disease transmission, and numerous "prevalence-behavior" models have analyzed this interplay. These previous analyses assumed homogeneously mixing populations without spatial or social structure. However, spatial and social heterogeneity are known to significantly impact transmission dynamics and are particularly relevant for certain diseases. Previous work has demonstrated that social contact structure can change the individual incentive to vaccinate, thus enabling eradication of a disease under a voluntary vaccination policy when the correspon

Mechanisms underlying the impact of environmental factors (physical, ecological, social) on infectious diseases.

The occurrence, transmission, and spread of infectious diseases are closely linked to environmental factors. As climate change intensifies, shifts in temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events are modifying pathogen survival, vector ecology, and the geographical range of infectious diseases. At the same time, ecosystem degradation, land-use change, urbanization, poverty, and social unrest further shape population exposure, healthcare access, and disease vulnerability. This narrative review synthesizes the mechanisms by which physical, ecological, and social environmental factors in

Consideration of social and environmental determinants of maternal and perinatal health in the geographic information systems era: a primer.

Social and environmental exposures influence health outcomes across the lifespan, including during the perinatal period. Negative exposures such as neighborhood deprivation, air pollution, and violence, as well as positive exposures such as greenspace, neighborhood cohesion, and walkability, interact to affect many complex health outcomes. Understanding the impact of neighborhood environmental exposures on health is required to design effective interventions to improve health impacts of the places shaping people's daily lives. In the era of geographic information systems (GIS), analyses deline

The impact of hunger and resource scarcity on children's fairness judgments and behaviors: A developmental cross-national investigation.

This study investigated how hunger and poverty influence children's willingness to share resources with a hungry recipient, as well as how these factors interact across development. Participants included 918 children aged 5 to 8 years from Bolivia, Haiti, and Cambodia, who were recruited from neighborhoods within each country varying in socioeconomic status. Children completed sharing tasks both before and after lunch. Linear mixed model analyses revealed that neighborhood poverty and acute hunger jointly influenced children's sharing behavior towards hungry recipients, but only when both fact

Female C57BL/6J mice perform distinctive urination behaviour accompanied by ultrasonic vocalisation sequences with a stereotyped temporal organisation.

Ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) are widely studied in mice as a marker of social communication. Typically, USVs are recorded during brief social encounters in unfamiliar test cages. In the present study, we explored how freely interacting pairs of C57BL/6 J adult female mice spontaneously use USVs during long-term monitoring. We discovered that these mice display a previously undescribed behaviour: they emit specific USV sequences while depositing a large volume of urine in a corner of the cage. The most striking feature of USVs accompanying this vocalised urination behaviour was the stereotyp

Directional bias in interpersonal emotion perception.

Accurately understanding others' emotional states is fundamental to effective social functioning. While extensive research exists on how humans recognize different emotions, little is known about how people assess emotional intensity. Through a preliminary survey and seven multi-site studies (n = 2866), we demonstrate that despite believing they gauge emotions accurately, systematic discrepancies emerge: individuals tend to rate others' emotions as more intense than those individuals rate themselves, particularly for negative emotions. This bias persists across text-based interactions, recorde

Examining the relationship between shame and social anxiety disorder: A systematic review.

This paper is the first systematic review of the literature on the relationship between shame and social anxiety (SA). We reviewed a total of 60 peer-reviewed empirical articles that met criteria for inclusion. We begin by summarizing literature investigating the empirical association between shame and SA and review literature on whether this association is impacted by cultural or diagnostic differences. Next, we briefly describe the updated version of Rapee and Heimberg's (1997) cognitive-behavioral model of social anxiety disorder (SAD; Heimberg, Brozovich, & Rapee, 2014) and propose how sha

E-Textiles for Healthy Ageing.

The ageing population has grown quickly in the last half century with increased longevity and declining birth rate. This presents challenges to health services and the wider society. This review paper considers different aspects (e.g., physical, mental, and social well-being) of healthy ageing and how health devices can help people to monitor health conditions, treat diseases and promote social interactions. Existing technologies for addressing non-physical (e.g., Alzheimer's, loneliness) and physical (e.g., stroke, bedsores, and fall) related challenges are presented together with the drivers…
