Does THA Improve Social Status Among Turkish Women With Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

BACKGROUND: In traditional societies, patients who reach adulthood with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may be labeled "disabled" and may be considered "defective," causing them psychologic pain and problems with social interactions. In some patriarchal societies, women disproportionately experience these problems, because they may be seen as insufficient in terms of marriage and sexual intercourse owing to hip-related limitations, and they may be married through arranged marriages to people who also have disabilities. This patriarchal structure limits the ways women can engage in soc

A text-driven, task-based approach to engaging EFL learners in speaking classes: Theoretical accounts and classroom-based evidence.

Drawing on a text-driven, task-based approach, this study aimed to explore English majors' engagement in speaking tasks. To achieve this objective, the study adopted a mixed-methods design, administering two research instruments in two consecutive stages following a 50-minute text-driven task-based lesson: a questionnaire completed by 75 English majors and a semi-structured interview with seven voluntary participants. Findings revealed that, despite occasional moments of disengagement, attributed to low English proficiency and time pressure, they generally exhibited behavioral, emotional, cogn

Beyond Stereotypes: Understanding Romantic Relationships and Dating Perspectives of Chinese Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This study explored the romantic relationship perspectives and experiences of Chinese youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through semi-structured interviews with 18 participants. Analysis revealed three themes: conceptualizations of love and relationships; barriers and facilitators to relationship pursuit; and support systems for romantic aspirations. Findings suggest that participants possess complex understandings of romantic relationships, face multi-layered barriers including family attitudes and limited social opportunities, and benefit from both formal and inform

[Framework conditions for rehabilitation measures in conservatively treated spinal disorders : Options and differences].

Chronic spinal disorders have different causes and require comprehensive diagnostics that address both structural and functional aspects. Conservative measures are often sufficient. Targeted rehabilitation measures in inpatient, outpatient, and mobile forms enable multimodal approaches based on the biopsychosocial pain model. The aim of these measures is to maintain, promote, or restore (professional) participation and everyday skills. Special forms of rehabilitation, such as medically oriented vocational and behaviorally oriented rehabilitation, systematically integrate work-related and psych

Health Disparities in Peripheral Artery Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects 200 million individuals worldwide. In the United States, certain demographic groups experience a disproportionately higher prevalence and clinical effect of PAD. The social and clinical effect of PAD includes higher rates of individual disability, depression, minor and major limb amputation along with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The reasons behind the inequitable burden of PAD and inequitable delivery of care are both multifactorial and complex in nature, including systemic and structural inequity that exists within our society. Herein, we

Health Care Disparities in High-Risk Neonates.

Long-standing health disparities in maternal reproductive health, infant morbidity and mortality, and long-term developmental outcomes are rooted in a foundation of structural racism. Social determinants of health profoundly affect reproductive health outcomes of Black and Hispanic women disproportionately; they have higher rates of death during pregnancy and preterm birth. Their infants are also more likely to be cared for in poorer quality neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), receive poorer quality of NICU care, and are less likely to be referred to an appropriate high-risk NICU follow-up

Perception risk, preventive behaviors and assessing the relationship between their various dimensions: A cross-sectional study in the Covid-19 peak period.

The Covid-19 epidemic is known as "the deadliest plague of the century" that has overshadowed various aspects of human life. Despite mutations in SARS-CoV-2, the development of new strains, and the escape of immunity, preventive health behaviors continue to play a key role in controlling this epidemic. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between risk perception and the performance of preventive behaviors of people in the Covid-19 peak period in society. This anonymous online survey was conducted with 1950 people in 30 provinces of Iran. The results showed that by increa

Men's grief and support following pregnancy loss: A qualitative investigation of service providers' perspectives.

This study explores service providers' experiences of supporting men following a miscarriage or stillbirth in Australia. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were completed with seven service providers including midwives, grief counselors and social workers. Participants highlighted that, despite the individual nature of men's grief, there is a need to recognize and address the additional expectations and responsibilities that may compound their experience. Within an environment focused on woman-centered care, participants described creative strategies and inclusive language to promote engagem

Experiences of stigma over the lifetime of people with xeroderma pigmentosum: A qualitative interview study in the United Kingdom.

This study explored experiences of stigma in 25 adults with xeroderma pigmentosum. Analysis of semi-structured interviews revealed the changing nature of stigma over the lifetime. Bullying occurred in childhood, whereas adults were questioned about both their photoprotection and skin damage, often resulting in internalised feelings of stigma. Resilience and rejection of feelings of stigma increased with age and experiences of stigma differed across cultures. Findings indicate a need to develop social skills training to help people reject feelings of stigma. Future research should explore persp

PTSD and conflict behavior between veterans and their intimate partners.

This study examined the influence of trauma history and PTSD symptoms on the behavior of veterans and their intimate partners (287 couples; N=574) observed during conflict discussions and coded using the Rapid Marital Interaction Coding System (Heyman, 2004). Dyadic structural equation modeling analyses showed that PTSD was associated with more frequent displays of hostility and psychological abuse and fewer expressions of acceptance and humor in both veterans and their partners. Findings provide new insight into the social and emotional deficits associated with PTSD and emphasize the importan

Costs and benefits in hunter-gatherer punishment.

Hunter-gatherer punishment involves costs and benefits to individuals and groups, but the costs do not necessarily fit with the assumptions made in models that consider punishment to be altruistic--which brings in the free-rider problem and the problem of second-order free-riders. In this commentary, I present foragers' capital punishment patterns ethnographically, in the interest of establishing whether such punishment is likely to be costly; and I suggest that in many cases abstentions from punishment that might be taken as defections by free-riders are actually caused by social-structural c

Coping with dating violence as a function of violence frequency and solution attribution: a structural modeling approach.

This study presents a structural model of coping with dating violence. The model integrates abuse frequency and solution attribution to relate to college women's choices of coping strategies. Three hundred and twenty-four undergraduate women reported being targets of some physical abuse from a boyfriend and responded to questions regarding the abuse, their solution attribution, and their coping behaviors. Solution attribution mediated the relation between frequency of the abuse and coping. Abuse frequency had a positive effect on external solution attribution, and external solution attribution

Tessier 3 cleft with bilateral anophthalmia: case report and surgical treatment.

Tessier clefts type 3 and 4 are rare. In this paper the authors report on the management of a wide Tessier 3 cleft. There is no standardized protocol or timing of the surgical procedures in this rare disfiguring condition. Generally speaking, the aim is to preserve the function of important anatomical structures (e.g., a seeing eye.) and reconstruct, as best as possible, harmonic facial features. The authors present a "step by step" solution of the malformation pointing out the limitations of the surgical procedures they used and the goals they wanted to obtain. Despite of the uniqueness and t

The qualitative similarity hypothesis.

Evidence is presented for the qualitative similarity hypothesis (QSH) with respect to children and adolescents who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. The primary focus is on the development of English language and literacy skills, and some information is provided on the acquisition of English as a second language. The QSH is briefly discussed within the purview of two groups of cognitive models: those that emphasize the cognitive development of individuals and those that pertain to disciplinary or knowledge structures. It is argued that the QSH has scientific merit with implications for classroom

Persons with traumatic brain injuries and their families: living arrangements and well-being post injury.

This article discusses an empirical study of 66 single, adult survivors of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) who were either living alone or living with their parents. The researchers determined perceived levels of stress, life satisfaction, family satisfaction, and community integration within the two groups. Survivors, who were typically ten years or more post injury, and selected family members, responded to structured telephone interviews and standardized questionnaires. The findings of the study and their implications point to a need for practice interventions that will rees

Arthrogryposis. Pediatric review and habilitative aspects.

A precise diagnosis among the types of arthrogryposis must be made. For amyoplasia, the recurrence risk is nonexistent, the natural history favorable. During the first weeks, frequent stretching supported by maintenance casting and splinting of severe or generalized contractures is indicated in a residential multidisciplinary center. The key to deformity is the rigidity of the periarticular structures. With limb growth, contractures progress or recur. The growth years must therefore be dominated by physical management, which consists of stretching, casting, and bracing interspersed by staged s

Applying the health belief model to understand vaccine perceptions, barriers, and motivators and peer influence in an underserved community: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Vaccine uptake remains suboptimal in many communities and is influenced by individual beliefs, social norms, interpersonal relationships, and structural factors. Guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM), this study explored vaccine perceptions, barriers, motivators, peer influence, and interest in peer advocacy among young adults in a medically underserved U.S.-Mexico border community. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted eight virtual qualitative discussion sessions with 2-6 participants per session (total n = 27), recruited through university, community, and clinical partnerships. Supporting the psychosocial well-being of patients with Long COVID: patient-informed strategies from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, an illness characterized by long-lasting symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection, exacts a substantial toll on psychosocial well-being and overall health. Persistent physiological symptoms and associated experiences can negatively impact employment, daily functioning, identity, and social relationships. However, there is a gap in the literature on patient-derived recommendations for addressing the psychosocial impacts of living with Long COVID. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify factors shaping the psychosocial well-being of individuals with Long COVID and elicit
