BACKGROUND: Subjects with normal body mass index (BMI) but elevated amounts of body fat (normal-weight obesity; NWO) show cardiometabolic dysregulation compared to subjects with normal BMI and normal amounts of body fat (normal-weight lean; NWL). In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether NWO individuals have higher rates of subclinical atherosclerosis compared to NWL subjects.
METHODS: From a large-scale health checkup system, we identified 2078 normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 25 kg/m(2)) subjects with no previous history of coronary artery disease who underwent analysis of atherosclerosis usin

BACKGROUND: An accurate pretherapeutic staging of laryngeal carcinoma is required for most treatment planning as well as for evaluation and comparison of the results of different treatment modalities. Neoplastic invasion of the laryngeal cartilage may have important therapeutic implications. To our knowledge, no data are available comparing the impact of endoscopic examination, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging on pretherapeutic staging accuracy. The purpose of our study was to determine which imaging should be used as an adjunct to other clinical examinations in th

Polypeptide growth factors are a class of potent natural biologic mediators which regulate many of the activities of wound healing including cell proliferation, migration, and metabolism. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) have been shown to regulate DNA and protein synthesis in bone cells in vitro and to interact synergistically to enhance soft tissue wound healing in vivo. We have hypothesized that the combination of PDGF and IGF-I may, therefore, enhance regeneration of both the soft and hard tissue components of the periodontium. To test this hyp

BACKGROUND: To ensure consistency in treatment planning across institutions, inter-center variations in Hounsfield look-up tables (HLUTs) have been evaluated using different methods in Japan and Europe. In Japan, the Hiroshima High-Precision Radiotherapy Cancer Center (HIPRAC) developed the computed tomography number calibration audit (HIPRAC-CTCA) based on a stoichiometric method, while in Europe, the European Particle Therapy Network (EPTN) implemented a method using validated tissue-equivalent inserts. Comparing these approaches is essential to improving consistency and reliability.

The biomechanics of the lung plays a crucial role in respiratory function, and its alteration is closely linked to the onset and progression of lung diseases. Quantifying local strain within lung tissue is essential for understanding how lung mechanics influence pulmonary function and disease progression. Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) provides a non-destructive method to quantify 3D strain fields in biological tissues, but its accuracy depends on multiple parameters, which remain poorly characterized in soft tissues. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of DVC, using both local and glob

Tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region present significant clinical challenges due to anatomical complexity and high individual variability, with the traditional experience-dependent model often lacking three-dimensional visualization, precise intraoperative navigation, and quantitative postoperative assessment. This article comprehensively reviews over a decade of research and clinical advances in "digital and intelligent surgery" developed by our team at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, systematically documenting its transformative impact on tumor management. Extensive lumbosacral defects remain a major reconstructive challenge because of limited regional tissue mobility, contamination risk, proximity to neural structures, and frequent association with prior surgery or spinal instrumentation. Although lumbar artery perforator (LAP) flaps are recognized as muscle-sparing options for posterior trunk reconstruction, their capacity to safely reconstruct very large midline lumbosacral defects and their applicability in rare adult presentations of lumbosacral myelomeningocele remain insufficiently defined. We report two adult female patients who underwen

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is the current reference standard for evaluating intra-articular distal radius fractures, however concerns remain regarding radiation exposure and limited soft tissue assessment. Zero Echo Time (ZTE) MRI is a novel technique that enables direct cortical bone imaging with contrast similar to CT, while avoiding radiation. This proof-of-concept study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of ZTE MRI with CT in fracture classification, articular involvement, and treatment planning.
METHODS: In this prospective comparative study, 28 patients with acute int

Background: Lumbar disk herniation is a common cause of low back pain and radiculopathy, significantly impacting patients' life quality and functional capacity. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) remains the gold standard for its assessment due to its superior soft tissue contrast and multiplanar imaging capabilities. However, recent advances in spectral computed tomography (CT), particularly dual-energy CT (DECT), have introduced new diagnostic opportunities, offering improved soft tissue characterization. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of DECT in detecting and grading lumbar

Background Peritonsillar abscesses (PTA) are the most common deep space infection of the head and neck. They appear to have an association with a patient's smoking history but data showing this relationship is sparse and controversial. Currently, no data on this association exists for those who seek care at a rural community emergency department (ED). Based upon the lack of data in this setting, the authors sought to determine the incidence, treatments, and outcomes between smokers and non-smokers with a PTA at a rural community ED. Methods A retrospective chart review of all patients undergoi

BACKGROUND: Most infants born extremely preterm (EP; <28 weeks' gestation) or extremely low birthweight (ELBW; <1000 g birthweight) in the post surfactant era (early 1990s) are now surviving into adulthood. Preterm birth/low birthweight are risk factors for reduced bone growth and mineralisation in infants and children. However, little is known about their bone health around peak bone mass and through adult life.
OBJECTIVE: To compare bone health (bone mineral measures, bone structure and strength) in young adults born EP/ELBW with controls (>2499 g birthweight), and within the EP/ELBW group

PURPOSE: Elastography images provide information about the mechanical properties of soft tissue in a noninvasive way and can be useful to identify abnormalities and ascertain differential diagnoses of suspicious prior findings obtained through mammography ultrasound. In this work we investigate, from a physics point of view, the feasibility of quantifying the Young's modulus of breast tissue from the autocorrelation of a diffuse acoustic field computed from a sequence of B-mode images acquired through conventional ultrasound scanners.
METHODS: Inspired in the seismological approach of retriev

Molecular human identification has conventionally focused on DNA sampling from dense, weight-bearing cortical bone tissue, typically from femora or tibiae. A comparison of skeletal elements from three contemporary individuals demonstrated that elements with high quantities of cancellous bone yielded nuclear DNA at the highest rates, suggesting that preferentially sampling cortical bone may be suboptimal (Mundorff & Davoren, 2014). Despite these findings, the reason for the differential DNA yields between cortical and cancellous bone tissues remains unknown. The primary goal of this work is to

PURPOSE: To assess the ability of 3-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, 1.5 and 3 tesla [T]) to quantify glenoid bone loss in a cadaveric model compared with the current gold standard, 3D computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: Six cadaveric shoulders were used to create a bone loss model, leaving the surrounding soft tissues intact. The anteroposterior (AP) dimension of the glenoid was measured at the glenoid equator and after soft tissue layer closure the specimen underwent scanning (CT, 1.5-T MRI, and 3-T MRI) with the following methods (0%, 10%, and 25% defect by area). Raw axial

PURPOSE: In current clinical practice, head and neck (H&N) hyperthermia treatment planning (HTP) is solely based on computed tomography (CT) images. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides superior soft-tissue contrast over CT. The purpose of the authors' study is to investigate the relevance of using MRI in addition to CT for patient modeling in H&N HTP.
METHODS: CT and MRI scans were acquired for 11 patients in an immobilization mask. Three observers manually segmented on CT, MRI T1 weighted (MRI-T1w), and MRI T2 weighted (MRI-T2w) images the following thermo-sensitive tissues: cerebrum,
