A standardized model, permitting only periosteal bone formation, has been applied for qualitative and quantitative studies on the osteogeneses from periosteal grafts. The periosteum from the tibia was grafted to the skull and vice versa. The investigation also included the study of periosteal bone formation combined with other osteogenic factors. Determination of metals in aerosol collected as thin layer on membran filters has made employing X-ray fluorescence. Standards are prepared in suitable chambers: dust collected on membran filter is weighted. The problems of methodology are discussed. Calibration curves have been prepared for Pb - Fe - Cd - Si; comparisons have been made with other methods employing atomic absorption spectroscopy.

A selective and critical review, mainly from 1971 to 1974, of atomic absorption applied to the determination of eight toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, thallium, arsenic, bismuth, beryllium, and boron) in blood, urine, and tissue is presented. Discussion involves both flame and flameless atomization, sample preparation, matrix modification, background correction, and contamination. Advantages of other atomic spectrometric techniques and use of recent confirmatory instrumental methods are included. Some normal and toxic levels are mentioned.

Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and serum glutamic oxaloacetic and pyruvic transaminase (SGOT, SGPT) levels were determined in 61 patients with leptospirosis and 16 with viral hepatitis during the acute phase of illness. Plasma and urinary zinc have been measured in 19 patients with malabsorption and 21 patients with hepatic cirrhosis. The results have been compared with those of 20 control subjects and 23 patients with a variety of other diseases. The diurnal variation in plasma zinc levels has been confirmed and is of such magnitude that this must be taken into account in comparing results in groups of subjects.
