Cardiac sympathetic modulation in response to apneas/hypopneas through heart rate variability analysis.

Autonomic dysfunction is recognized to contribute to cardiovascular consequences in obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients who present predominant cardiovascular sympathetic activity that persists during wakefulness. Here, we examined 1) the factors that influence sympathetic cardiac modulation in response to apneas/hypopneas; and 2) the influence of autonomic activity during apneas/hypopneas on CA. Sixteen OSAHS patients underwent in-hospital polysomnography. RR interval (RR) and RR spectral analysis using wavelet transform were used to study parasympathetic (high frequenc

Hypothesis: exertional heat stroke-induced myopathy and genetically inherited malignant hyperthermia represent the same disorder, the human stress syndrome.

Exertional heat stroke is usually experienced as a result of a prolonged and intensive exercise. It is a life-threatening condition that is characterized by an increase in core body temperature and rhabdomyolysis. The associated hyperkalemia and metabolic acidosis may lead to an acute renal, cardiac, and hemostatic failure. Exactly, the same symptoms are noticed in case of the anesthesia-induced malignant hyperthermia (MH), an inherited disorder of the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor. This receptor is a Ca(2+) channel that is activated by the volatile anesthetic agents and depolarizing musc

Tonic activity of carotid body chemoreceptors contributes to the increased sympathetic drive in essential hypertension.

Carotid chemoreceptors provoke an increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activation (MSNA) in response to hypoxia; they are also tonically active during normoxic breathing. The contribution of peripheral chemoreceptors to sympathetic activation in hypertension is incompletely understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of chemoreceptor deactivation on sympathetic activity in untreated patients with hypertension. A total of 12 untreated hypertensive males and 11 male controls participated in this randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled study. MSNA, systolic blood pressure(BP)

Effects of submaximal exercise on blood rheology and sympathetic nerve activity.

BACKGROUND: To explore the acute effects of submaximal exercise on blood rheology and sympathetic nerve activity. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of exercise (20 or 80 Watts (W)) on blood rheology and sympathetic nerve activity were assessed in 10 healthy Japanese men. Blood sampling and heart rate variability (HRV) recording were performed during 20-min supine rest and standing ergometric exercise (20 W for 10 min, 80 W for 10 min) and recovery. Blood passage time across the microchannels (diameter, 7 microm) as a parameter of blood rheology, and the number of adhesive leukocytes on microch

Effects and mechanisms of gastrointestinal electrical stimulation on slow waves: a systematic canine study.

The aims of this study were to determine optimal pacing parameters of electrical stimulation on different gut segments and to investigate effects and possible mechanisms of gastrointestinal electrical stimulation on gut slow waves. Twelve female hound-mix dogs were used in this study. A total of six pairs of electrodes were implanted on the stomach, duodenum, and ascending colon. Bilateral truncal vagotomy was performed in six of the dogs. One experiment was designed to study the effects of the pacing frequency on the entrainment of gut slow waves. Another experiment was designed to study the

Sympathetic activity relates to adenosine A(2A) receptor gene variation in blood-injury phobia.

Variation in the candidate genes adenosine A(2A) receptor (A(2A)R), catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT), and norepinephrine transporter (NET) has been suggested to influence vulnerability to panic disorder. We therefore investigated patients with another anxiety disorder with an even higher heritability, the blood-injury phobia, for association of these variants and used sympathetic measures during venipuncture, which serve as a naturalistic trigger of anxiety and autonomic hyperarousal, as an intermediate phenotype of anxiety. Patients homozygous for the A(2A)R 1976T allele as compared to pa

Diminished A-type potassium current and altered firing properties in presympathetic PVN neurones in renovascular hypertensive rats.

Accumulating evidence supports a contribution of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) to sympathoexcitation and elevated blood pressure in renovascular hypertension. However, the underlying mechanisms resulting in altered neuronal function in hypertensive rats remain largely unknown. Here, we aimed to address whether the transient outward potassium current (I(A)) in identified rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM)-projecting PVN neurones is altered in hypertensive rats, and whether such changes affected single and repetitive action potential properties and associated changes in intrac

Canine model of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and paroxysmal atrial tachycardia.

Both autonomic nerve activity and electrical remodeling are important in atrial arrhythmogenesis. Therefore, dogs with sympathetic hyperinnervation, myocardial infarction (MI), and complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) may have a high incidence of atrial arrhythmias. We studied eight dogs (experimental group) with MI, CAVB, and sympathetic hyperinnervation induced either by nerve growth factor infusion (n = 4 dogs) or subthreshold electrical stimulation (n = 4 dogs) of the left stellate ganglion. Cardiac rhythm was continuously monitored by a Data Sciences International transmitter for 48 (SD

Analysis of the relationship between muscle sympathetic nerve activity and cardiac 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine uptake in patients with Parkinson's disease.

To analyze the correlation between muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and cardiac (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), we measured both parameters in 14 PD patients who were 51 to 82 years of age (mean, 63.1 +/- 8.7 years). The duration of PD was 2 to 26 years, and the disability level (modified Hoehn and Yahr stage) ranged from 2.0 to 4.0 (mean, 3.2 +/- 0.5). MSNA was recorded from the peroneal nerve fascicles using microneurographic methods, and then cardiac MIBG scintigraphy was performed within 1 month. We analyzed the correlation be

The effects of hysterectomy on sexual arousal in women with a history of benign uterine fibroids.

Research indicates hysterectomy surgery may adversely affect the pelvic autonomic nerves and autonomic mechanisms are integral to the sexual arousal response in women. This study explored the possibility that women who undergo hysterectomy may experience an impaired vasocongestive response to erotic stimulation. Thirty-two women with a history of benign uterine fibroids who had ( n = 15) or had not ( n = 17) undergone hysterectomy participated in two experimental sessions in which self-report and physiological (vaginal pulse amplitude; VPA) sexual responses were recorded during an erotic film

Cardiovascular control during voluntary static exercise in humans with tetraplegia.

The purpose of the present study was 1) to investigate whether an increase in heart rate (HR) at the onset of voluntary static arm exercise in tetraplegic subjects was similar to that of normal subjects and 2) to identify how the cardiovascular adaptation during static exercise was disturbed by sympathetic decentralization. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and HR were noninvasively recorded during static arm exercise at 35% of maximal voluntary contraction in six tetraplegic subjects who had complete cervical spinal cord injury (C(6)-C(7)). Stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and total

The eye as metronome of the body.

Vision is much more than just resolving small objects. In fact, the eye sends visual information to the brain that is not consciously perceived. One such pathway entails visual information to the hypothalamus. The retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) mediates light entrainment of circadian rhythms. Retinofugal fibers project to several nuclei of the hypothalamus. These and further projections to the pineal via the sympathetic system provide the anatomical substrate for the neuro-endocrine control of diurnal and longer rhythms. Without the influence of light and dark, many rhythms desynchronize and e

Sympathoexcitation to intravenous interleukin-1beta is dependent on forebrain neural circuits.

We investigated the contributions of forebrain, brain stem, and spinal neural circuits to interleukin (IL)-1beta-induced sympathetic nerve discharge (SND) responses in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rats. Lumbar and splenic SND responses were determined in spinal cord-transected (first cervical vertebra, C1), midbrain-transected (superior colliculus), and sham-transected rats before and for 60 min after intravenous IL-1beta (285 ng/kg). The observations made were the following: 1) lumbar and splenic SND were significantly increased after IL-1beta in sham C1-transected rats but were unchanged af

Effect of P-wave timing during supraventricular tachycardia on the hemodynamic and sympathetic neural response.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown the importance of the timing of atrial and ventricular systole on the hemodynamic response during supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). However, the reflex changes in autonomic tone during SVT remain poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven patients with permanent dual-chamber pacemakers were enrolled in the study. Arterial blood pressure (BP), central venous pressure (CVP), and peripheral muscle sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) were recorded during DDD pacing at a rate of 175 bpm (cycle length 343 ms) with an atrioventricular (AV) interval of 30, 2

Influence of rostral ventrolateral medulla on renal sympathetic baroreflex in conscious rabbits.

Previous studies with anesthetized animals have shown that the pressor region of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) is a critical site in vasomotor control. The aim of this study was to develop, in conscious rabbits, a technique for microinjecting into the RVLM and to determine the influence of this area on renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and arterial pressure (AP) using local injections of glutamate, rilmenidine, ANG II and sarile. Rabbits were implanted with guide cannulas for bilateral microinjections into the RVLM (n = 7) or into the intermediate ventrolateral medulla (IVLM,

The pathophysiology of renin release in renovascular hypertension.

Renovascular hypertension (RVH) results from occlusion of blood flow to either kidney, which stimulates renin release. Increased renin leads to a series of actions that rapidly leads to increased systemic blood pressure. Experimental renovascular hypertension is developed in animals by placement of a clip that occludes more than 50% of renal blood flow to that kidney. The major stimulus for renin release in renovascular hypertension is the severe drop in hydrostatic pressure in the afferent arteriole, the location of the juxtaglomerular renin-secreting granular cells. The pressure drop changes
