OBJECTIVE: To study the role of hyaluronic acid (HA) in polidocanol (POL) foam.
METHODS: The dose-dependent effect of HA-POL on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as well as foam stability was evaluated by measuring optical density (OD) values and foam half-life time (FHT), respectively. An in vitro model was utilized for estimating the foam blood-displacement capacity by adopting maximum displacement distance (MDD) and displacement time. The Barwon Health Cachexia & Nutrition Support Service (CNSS) is an outpatient service focused on improving clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients with or at high risk of cancer cachexia. Patients see a multidisciplinary team, comprising a palliative medicine physician, physiotherapist, dietitian, and nurse practitioner. In order to reduce iron deficiency in neonates at-risk for iron deficiency, we implemented a guideline to increase the consistency of early iron supplementation in infants of diabetic mothers, small for gestational age neonates and very low birthweight premature neonates. OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on the relation between objective voice quality and the self-perception of a voice handicap.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 86 German-speaking patients (51 women, 35 men) suffering from benign dysphonia. The test persons completed the German version of the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) Questionnaire without prior information about their diagnosis and underwent voice analysis with the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) being the parameter of this study.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the prevalence of normal alveolar-arterial gradients in pregnant patients with documented pulmonary embolism.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was performed on all pregnant women with pulmonary embolism at two large obstetric centers between 1990 and 1995. Alveolar-arterial gradients were calculated from room air arterial blood gas values and compared with values from patients who had been established as normal.

Hematologic values and lymphocyte subpopulations were determined in normal fetal blood during the second trimester of gestation. In these samples the platelet, erythrocyte, and leukocyte counts were significantly lower than in adults. Large red blood cells with a high hemoglobin content were present. Before the twentieth week of gestation, erythroblasts made up about half of the nucleated elements. Lymphocytes formed most of the leukocytes, and their absolute numbers were comparable to those in adults. Most of the fetal blood lymphocytes expressed T- or B-cell surface differentiation antigens.

Platelet-associated IgG (PAIgG) was studied by a quantitative platelet radioactive anti-IgG test (PRAT) in 298 patients. OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost-effectiveness of single-stage free tissue transfer techniques as compared to no intervention for the treatment of chronic facial paralysis.
METHODS: The health utility values specific to unilateral facial paralysis and post-facial reanimation, as well as the cost and success rate of free tissue transfer, were derived from the published literature. Decision tree modeling with Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate cost-effectiveness. A sensitivity analysis tested the validity of the conclusions by modeling variations in cost and utility values.
