OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the effects of thyroidectomy-a surgical intervention involving the removal of the thyroid gland-on voice quality, as represented by acoustic and electroglottographic measures. Given the thyroid gland's proximity to the inferior and superior laryngeal nerves, thyroidectomy carries a potential risk of affecting vocal function. While earlier studies have documented effects on the voice range, few studies have looked at voice quality after thyroidectomy. Since voice quality effects could manifest in many ways, that a priori are unknown, we wish to apply an ex

BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP) after esophagectomy can cause aspiration because of incomplete glottis closure, leading to pneumonia. However, patients with RLNP often have preserved swallowing function. This study investigated factors that determine swallowing function in patients with RLNP.
METHODS: Patients with esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy and cervical esophagogastric anastomosis were enrolled between 2017 and 2020. Videofluoroscopic examination of swallowing study (VFSS) and acoustic voice analysis were performed on patients with suspected dysphagi

BACKGROUND: Tic disorder is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by involuntary movements or vocalizations. Previous studies utilizing diffusion-weighted imaging to explore white-matter alterations in tic disorders have reported inconsistent results regarding the affected tracts. We aimed to address this gap by employing a novel tractography technique for more detailed analysis.
METHODS: We analyzed MRI data from 23 children with tic disorders and 23 healthy controls using TRActs Constrained by UnderLying Anatomy (TRACULA), an advanced automated probabilistic tractography method. We exam

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the most common symptom of auditory system disorders. It affects the quality of life of millions of people, but it is still incurable in most cases. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy is a potential new treatment for subjective tinnitus. In this study, transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) combined with tones was utilized to treat salicylate-induced tinnitus since salicylate is a reliable and convenient approach for rapidly inducing tinnitus.
METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into acoustic stimulation alone (AS, n = 6), tVNS alone (n = 6), and tVNS with AS

In this work, novel numerical models were developed and validated to offer new strategies in modelling sonochemical reactors. More specifically, in our original approach the non-linear Louisnard model was coupled with heat and mass transport equations to predict gradients in temperature and species concentration in a sonicated reactor. Additionally, a new operating window was investigated by modelling mixtures of increasing viscosity on both micro- and macroscale sonochemical effects. On the microscale, the effects of increasing viscosity on bubble dynamics were determined by solving the Kelle

Certain ocular conditions result from the non-physiological presence of intraocular particles, leading to visual impairment and potential long-term damage. This happens when the normally clear aqueous humor becomes less transparent, thus blocking the visual axis and by intraocular pressure elevation due to blockage of the trabecular meshwork, as seen in secondary open-angle glaucoma (SOAG). Some of these "particle-related pathologies" acquire ocular conditions like pigment dispersion syndrome, pseodoexfoliation and uveitis. Others are trauma-related, such as blood cell accumulation in hyphema.

Comparing artificial neural networks with outputs of neuroimaging techniques has recently seen substantial advances in (computer) vision and text-based language models. Here, we propose a framework to compare biological and artificial neural computations of spoken language representations and propose several new challenges to this paradigm. The proposed technique is based on a similar principle that underlies electroencephalography (EEG): averaging of neural (artificial or biological) activity across neurons in the time domain, and allows to compare encoding of any acoustic property in the bra

Remote microphones (RMs) enable clearer reception of speech than would be normally achievable when relying on the acoustic sound field at the listener's ear (Hawkins, J Sp Hear Disord 49, 409-418, 1984). They are used in a wide range of environments, with one example being for children in educational settings. The international standards defining the assessment methods of the technical performance of RMs rely on free-field (anechoic) delivery, a rarely met acoustic scenario. Although some work has been offered on more real-world testing (Husstedt et al., Int J Audiol 61, 34-45. 2022), the area

Genetic Leukoencephalopathies (gLEs) are heritable white matter disorders that cause progressive neurological abnormalities. A founder mutation in the human endolysosomal trafficking protein VPS11 has been identified in Ashkenazi Jewish patients manifesting classic gLE symptoms of hypomyelination, developmental delay, motor and systemic deficits. In this study, we characterized the visual and sensorimotor function of two zebrafish vps11 mutant lines: the previously reported vps11(plt), and a new vps11(-/-) null mutant line, using behavioral analysis to track larval motor responses to visual an

There is a recent trend to place more emphasis on noise non-auditory effects. Despite its implications on health, there is a lack of recommendations for noise in occupational settings. This study aimed to present occupational exposure limits for noise-induced non-auditory effects in healthy males using empirical exposure-response regression models based on the data of laboratory and field considering the effective variables. To this end, the equivalent noise level was measured and recorded in four working settings including closed offices, open-plan offices, control rooms, and industrial workpl

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic distortions to the speech signal impair spoken language recognition, but healthy listeners exhibit adaptive plasticity consistent with rapid adjustments in how the distorted speech input maps to speech representations, perhaps through engagement of supervised error-driven learning. This puts adaptive plasticity in speech perception in an interesting position with regard to developmental dyslexia inasmuch as dyslexia impacts speech processing and may involve dysfunction in neurobiological systems hypothesized to be involved in adaptive plasticity.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic pollution is generally analysed in relation to the risks for the hearing apparatus, omitting the extra-auditory effects, such as the damage that the noise can cause to the speaker's voice and listening to the learning of the vocal message. These damages are mainly found in school environments among teachers.
OBJECTIVE: A cross-sectional study was carried out to verify the influence that the noise of the classrooms can have on the physical and mental health of the teachers examined.
METHODS: This study involved four schools of Rome, for a total of 60 teachers, who were in

Adolescence is a time period in development when the brain undergoes substantial remodeling in response to the environment. To determine whether a stressful experience during adolescence affects adult behavior, we exposed adolescent male and female C57BL/6J mice to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) for 12 days starting at postnatal day 28 (PND28). We also exposed adult male and female mice to CUS for 12 days beginning at PND70 to determine whether adolescence is a sensitive time period when stress can have long-lasting effects on behavior. Regardless of when mice were exposed to stress, they
