In situ supported Pd NPs on biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified magnetic nanoparticles as an effective catalyst for the ultrasound assisted oxidation of alcohols and activities against human breast cancer.

In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol's oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterog…

RSA 2004: combined basic research satellite symposium-mechanisms of alcohol-mediated organ and tissue damage: inflammation and immunity and alcohol and mitochondrial metabolism: at the crossroads of life and death session one: alcohol, cellular and organ damage.

This article summarizes content proceedings of a satellite meeting held at the 2004 Research Society on Alcoholism Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver, Canada. The aim of the satellite conference was to facilitate the interaction of scientists investigating the mechanisms of alcohol-mediated organ or tissue damage, and enable the discussion and sharing of new ideas and concepts that may be common in each of the organs or tissues affected by chronic ethanol consumption. The original planned program on immunity was expanded to incorporate a session on a closely related topic "Alcohol and Mito

Substitution, addition or stepping-stone? Exploring the temporal associations between the consumption of alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages among Dutch university students.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Stimulating the use of alcohol-free beverages is portrayed as one strategy to reduce excessive alcohol use and alcohol-related harm among students in higher education. This strategy relies on the assumption that students drink alcohol-free to substitute alcohol (i.e. 'substitution effect'), while other possibilities like drinking alcohol-free in addition to alcohol (i.e. 'addition effect') or alcohol-free acting as a step-up to consume (more) alcohol (i.e. 'stepping-stone' effect) have largely been neglected. Consequently, this pre-registered study aimed to examine bi-direc

When the Good Outweighs the Bad: Day-Level Interactions Between Positive and Negative Alcohol Consequences and Their Impact on Next-Day Alcohol Cognitions.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consequences are among the most studied predictors of future drinking behavior, yet findings regarding the influence of negative consequences on subsequent alcohol use remain inconsistent. It is possible that the more frequent experience of positive consequences, which are more salient to drinking behavior, outweighs the impact of negative consequences. The current study examined how both domains of alcohol consequences and their co-occurrence influenced next-day evaluations of drinking episodes and subsequent drinking behavior among young adults. METHOD: Eighty-four young

Lifetime Drinking Patterns Shape Awareness of Alcohol-Related Chronic Disease Risks in U.S. Adults: Findings From the National Alcohol Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the relationship between people's lifetime alcohol use and their awareness of the risk of common chronic diseases from alcohol use is important for informing health messaging efforts. This article aimed to (a) assess the level of awareness that alcohol use increases the risk of cancer, diabetes, and hypertension, and (b) examine the association between lifetime drinking patterns and levels of awareness. METHOD: We used data from the 2019-2020 National Alcohol Survey that included awareness that cancer, hypertension, and diabetes could result from drinking too much alc

High Prevalence of Suicidal Behavior in Severe Alcohol Use Disorder Linked to Specific Neurocognitive Deficits: The Cognition, Alcohol, Genes, and Environment Study.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors (STB) frequently co-occur. Their association could be explained by a causal pathway and/or a shared liability related to mechanisms involved in aberrant decision-making. These pathways of risk remain to be tested and characterized. METHODS: We introduce here the Cognition, Alcohol, Genes, and Environment (CAGE) study, a data collection project aiming to combine neurocognitive (cognitive and affective processes related to decision-making) and genetic data to study mechanisms contributing to the comorbidity of AUD and STB

Racial Discrimination Moderates the Association Between Alcohol Consumption and Alcohol-Related Consequences Among One First Nation Reserve Community's Youth.

North American Indigenous (NAI) adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of alcohol-related consequences and racial discrimination but report similar rates of alcohol consumption as other racial/ethnic groups. Racial discrimination serves a deleterious role on adolescent development and well-being. To test if NAI adolescents' disproportionate rates of alcohol-related consequences are related to the negative effects of racial discrimination, the present study examined whether racial discrimination moderates the association between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related consequences

A new questionnaire on alcohol-related risk perception: Validation and psychometric properties from a student sample and inpatients with alcohol use disorder in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Risk perception is a central concept in the public health and prevention field. Alcohol-related risk perception is distorted in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but is rarely employed in substance use research and therapy. The German questionnaire "Form to assess Alcohol-related Risk perception ('Fragebogen zur alkoholbezogenen Risikowahrnehmung'; FAR) is a 44-item self-report instrument measuring the subjective risk perception of typical dangers caused by hazardous alcohol use (health, risk behavior, social life, work, law). It is based on the theoretical framework of four risk percept

Citrus unshiu fermented vinegar and Hovenia dulcis fruit extract formulation enhances alcohol metabolism and attenuates alcohol-induced hepatic injury.

Chronic or excessive ethanol consumption leads to the accumulation of ethanol and its reactive metabolite acetaldehyde, resulting in oxidative stress, hepatocellular injury, and hangover symptoms. In this study, the hepatoprotective and alcohol-metabolizing effects of SKM, a mixture of Citrus unshiu fruit vinegar, Hovenia dulcis fruit extract, and glucose, were evaluated in both rat models and a human clinical trial. In acute ethanol-exposed rats, SKM administration significantly reduced blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations compared with the alcohol group. In chronic ethanol-fed rats,

Maternal gut and vaginal microbiota, alcohol use during pregnancy, and infant fetal alcohol spectrum disorder diagnosis in a South African cohort.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental impact of alcohol consumption on the gut microbiome is well-established. However, less is known about how alcohol exposure during pregnancy affects the maternal gut and vaginal microbiota, or how these microbial changes relate to subsequent infant diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). We therefore investigated associations between self-reported alcohol use during pregnancy, infant FASD diagnosis, and maternal gut and vaginal microbiota. METHODS: Fecal samples (n = 207) and vaginal swabs (n = 28) from pregnant participants recruited through antenatal

Association between Levels of Alcohol Use, Perceived HIV Risk, and Untreated HIV Among Persons at Alcohol-Serving Venues in Kenya and Uganda.

Alcohol-serving venues in East Africa are high-risk environments for HIV transmission but few studies in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have examined perceived HIV risk and sexual risk behaviors by alcohol use levels on a broader population of persons at alcohol-serving venues in the era of biomedical HIV prevention. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of adults (≥ 18 years) at alcohol-serving venues in eight communities (~ 10,000 residents/community) in rural western Kenya and southwestern Uganda. We distributed recruitment cards to patrons and workers and invited them for free HIV screening at

Synthesis and Investigation of Antibacterial Properties of Thymol, Carvacrol, Eugenol, and Perillyl Alcohol Based β-Halo Alcohol and β-Halo Thiol Compounds.

A total of 12 new β-halo alcohols and 12 new β-halo thiol derivatives were synthesized. Natural alcohol compounds with known pharmacological properties were selected as starting substrates, aiming to synthesize compounds that have the potential to exhibit biological activity. The synthesis of β-halo alcohol derivatives involved a two-step process, while β-halo thiol derivatives were carried out in three steps. Effective and inexpensive methods were used for all transformations. Yields for β-halo alcohol derivatives ranged from 79% to 82%, and for β-halo thiol derivatives from 66% to 71%. Their…

Exploring views and experiences of a unique alcohol assertive outreach model, the primary care alcohol nurse outreach service (PCANOS): a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There are recognised barriers to engagement with mainstream alcohol services for certain groups within populations. Alcohol assertive outreach is an approach that uses repeated, persistent and flexible methods to engage with patients with alcohol problems from these groups. There are few qualitative studies that explore how alcohol assertive outreach services are experienced by stakeholders. This study focuses on a unique service, The Primary Care Alcohol Nurse Outreach Service (PCANOS), that operated in Glasgow, Scotland and which involved Alcohol Nurses working closely with gener

Association of non-alcoholic fatty liver polygenic risk scores with the incident and progressive non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an escalating health concern, with genetic factors playing a substantial role. This study aimed to establish and validate a polygenic risk score for East Asian populations (PRS-EA). METHODS: A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies on NAFLD in East Asian populations was conducted to develop a PRS-EA model. This model was subsequently validated in the Kailuan cohort by exploring its association with NAFLD development and progression. RESULTS: A PRS-EA model involving four SNPs (rs2896019, rs3810622, rs58542926, and rs1260326) w
