BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones tend to regulate the metabolic rate of the body. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is involved in the regulation of cardiovascular functions, and its dysfunction increases cardiovascular risk. About 65% of overt hypothyroid patients have autonomic dysfunction, which is due to sympathetic overactivity and parasympathetic withdrawal leading to a state of sympathovagal imbalance. Also, hypothyroidism is stated to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
PURPOSE: Yoga practice helps in better modulation of the ANS and has been shown to improve autono…

BACKGROUND: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is accompanied by an imbalance in the cardiac autonomic nervous system, characterized by over-activated sympathetic tone and reduced vagal nerve activity. In our preceding study, we pioneered the development of the magnetic vagus nerve stimulation (mVNS) system. This system showcased precise vagus nerve stimulation, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness and safety in treating myocardial infarction. However, it remains uncertain whether mVNS can mitigate myocardial I/R injury and its specific underlying mechanisms. In this study, we util…

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and heart failure (HF) are frequent comorbidities among elderly patients. HF, a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, is characterized by sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is rapidly growing and the risk of developing HF is higher among DM patients. DM is responsible for several macro- and micro-angiopathies that contribute to the development of coronary artery disease (CAD), peripheral artery disease, retinopathy, neuropathy and diabetic nephropathy (DN) as well. Independently of CAD, chronic kidney disease

Cardiovascular diseases pose a significant threat to global health, and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has become a critical component of patient care. Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) is a non-invasive approach that helps modulate the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) through Resonance Frequency (RF) breathing, supporting CR for cardiovascular patients. However, traditional HRVB techniques rely heavily on manual RF selection and face-to-face guidance, limiting their widespread application, particularly in home-based CR. To address these limitations, we propose a remote human-computer colla…

The brain-heart axis, a core bidirectional communication network linking the central nervous system and cardiovascular system, plays a pivotal role in the onset, progression, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases when its regulatory homeostasis is disrupted. This review systematically examines the core regulatory pathways and molecular mechanisms of the brain-heart axis and highlights its pathological roles in major cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Particular emphasis is placed on recent advances in key pathways, includi

PURPOSE: This study explores the use of heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, a noninvasive technique for assessing the autonomic nervous system, by applying nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to detect chaotic behavior in RR intervals and assess cardiovascular health.
METHODS: Employing the "System Analysis of Heart Rate Dynamics" (SADR) program, this research combines chaos analysis with the short-time Fourier transform to assess nonlinear dynamic parameters in HRV. It includes constructing phase portraits in Takens space and calculating measures of chaos to identify deterministic chaos i…

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a common accompaniment of a variety of chronic, inflammatory diseases, including long CO … isruptors, and when their targets are nerve membranes, this can explain neurotoxicity and hence the autonomic nervous system dysfunction that contributes to POTS. Taken together as a system view, we indicate that fibrinaloid microclots can serve to link POTS and fatigue in long COVID in a manner that is at once both mechanistic and explanatory. This has clear implications …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to neurodegeneration. The clinical course is highly variable, but its prevalence is rising worldwide, partly thanks to novel disease-modifying therapies. Additionally, the lifespan of people with MS is increasing, and for this reason, it is fundamental to have a multidisciplinary approach to MS. MS may be associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but there is scarce attention on this issue. In particular, CNS is essential in regulating the autonomic syste

Autonomic imbalance plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The central nervous system (CNS) cooperates dynamically with the immune system to regulate inflammation through humoral and neural pathways. In particular, acetylcholine (Ach), the main neurotransmitter in the vagus nerve, decreases the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines through a mechanism dependent on the α7 nicotinic Ach receptors (α7nAChRs). Areas covered: Here, we review the evidence for involvement of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) in IBD. We also elaborate the role

The hypothalamus is a critical regulator of body homeostasis, influencing the autonomic nervous system and releasing trophic hormones to modulate the endocrine system. The developmental mechanisms that govern formation of the mature hypothalamus are becoming increasingly understood as research in this area grows, leading us to gain appreciation for how these developmental programs are susceptible to disruption by maternal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals or other environmental factors in utero. These vulnerabilities, combined with the prominent roles of the various hypothalamic nucle…

The arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ANH) interacts with other hypothalamic nuclei, forebrain regions, and downstream brain sites to affect autonomic nervous system outflow, energy balance, temperature regulation, sleep, arousal, neuroendocrine function, reproduction, and cardiopulmonary regulation. Compared to studies of other ANH functions, how the ANH regulates cardiopulmonary function is less understood. Importantly, the ANH exhibits structural and functional sexually dimorphic characteristics and contains numerous neuroactive substances and receptors including leptin, neuropeptide Y, …

Accumulated evidence suggests that cardiovascular autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction may be the underlying cause of many MS clinical presentations, including neurodegeneration and reduced response to immunomodulatory therapies, depression, fatigue and sleep disorders, migraine, osteoporosis, and chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, the newer MS vascular etiology. We have recently described the genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors with the potential influencing ANS activity, and the interactions among these factors. This review expands upon previous ones, describing the…

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a new component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Accumulating evidence shows that ACE2 provides protective effects in peripheral tissues and has great potential for the treatment of RAS-related diseases. The role of ACE2 in the central nervous system is not well established. However, in recent years, much more progress has been made on the studies of this carboxypeptidase in the central regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular function in general. It has been shown that brain ACE2 interacts with the other components of the RAS (ACE, angiot

Since the discovery of opioid peptides, the brain opioid system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of a spectrum of mental disorders, including depression and epilepsy. For example, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that these neuropeptides are activated by seizures. Specifically, using electroconvulsive shock, it has been possible to describe an array of antinociceptive, autonomic, behavioral, biochemical, and electroencephalographic responses that appear to be mediated by endogenously activated opioids. A primary role for opioid peptides as neuromodulators of postictal seizure

Central electroanalgesia (CEAN) is a technique that involves application of pulsating current to the central nervous system in order to enhance its tonicity recover autonomic equilibrium and to reduce parasympathetic cardiovascular reactions. In two experimental runs in which 9 volunteers participated the efficacy of CEAN in preventing motion sickness symptoms produced by Markaryan's test was studied. After two rotations repeated with a one-hour interval vestibular reactions persisted for 7-10 hours. CEAN had a positive effect: after a one-hour CEAN session applied between two rotations the to

Blood flow in the gingiva, comprising the interdental papilla as well as attached and marginal gingiva, is important for maintaining of gingival function and is modulated by risk factors such as stress that may lead to periodontal disease. Marked blood flow changes mediated by the autonomic (parasympathetic and sympathetic) nervous system may be essential for gingival hemodynamics. However, differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their functional significance in different parts of the gingiva are unclear. We examined the differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their interacti
