Excretory liver function was analyzed in 10 healthy volunteers and 28 subjects with acute or chronic liver injury following intravenous administration of 99mtechnetium p-isopropyl iminodiacetic acid. Hepatobiliary transit of this agent was quantitated at 5-min intervals for a total of 60 min. A case report of a congenital esophagobiliary communication with atresia of left ductus hepaticus is presented. The communication of the esophagus with the duct of the left liver lobus was examined by giving Esophotrast into esophagus and by intravenous cholangio-cholecystography and tomography. Atresia of the left ductus hepaticus was detected by intraoperative cholangiography. The case is presented because of its rarity and it has only an embryological explanation.

Choledochoduodenostomy was performed in 68 patients. In these cases, we attempted to determine any correlation between the size of the common duct and subsequent cholangitis. Follow-up information was available in 64 (94%) of the cases, with a mean follow-up of three years. The most common indication for choledochoduodenostomy was choledocholiothiasis. Prior biliary surgery was used in 33 (48%) patients. Benign disease was present in 51 patients, and 17 patients had malignant neoplasms. In 31 patients with histologically proven hepatocellular jaundice hepatobiliary scintigraphy with Tc-99m labelled IDA derivatives was performed. Results were classified under morphological (demonstration of liver parenchyma, ductus choledochus, bile ducts, gallbladder, kidney) and functional (Tmax, half time of bile excretion, appearance of activity in ductus choledochus, gallbladder, and intestines) criteria. The mean plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) were measured before and after the administration of 2000 units of daily oral vitamin D2 for a period of 2 weeks in 9 normal infants and children, 7 infants with neonatal hepatitis and persistent neonatal hepatitis, and 4 infants with congenital biliary atresia. A unusual case of choledochal cyst in an adult presenting as acute pancreatitis is described. Subsequent evaluation by ERCP revealed two atypical features, involvement of the cystic duct (proximal dilatation) and a long (six times normal) intrapancreatic common channel, which may be etiologically related to the pancreatitis.

Praziquantel (EMBAY 8440, Droncit) is a new type of acylated isoquinoline-pyrazine. A single oral or subcutaneous dose of the compound is reliably effective against juvenile and adult cestodes in mice and rats. Examination of 52 aimed duodenal biopsies has revealed that there are several variants of the structure of the Vater's papilla mucous membrane. In a number of cases it is identicalto the mucous membrane of the duodenum. In reviewing 38 cases of biliary atresia, 8 cases were detected to have osseous abnormalities. We found definite generalized demineralization of bones in 3 cases, metaphyseal abnormalities in 5 cases, and fractures in 4 cases. Marked demineralization of bones was seen in cases in which the clinical course was more than 1 year. No good correlation was observed between osseous changes and severity of liver dysfunction.
