The troubled relationship between psychiatry and sociology.

The alienated relationship between psychiatry and sociology is explored. The two disciplines largely took divergent paths after 1970. On the one side, psychiatry manifested a pre-occupation with methodological questions and sought greater medical respectability, with a biomedical approach returning to the fore. Social psychiatry and its underpinning biopsychosocial model became increasingly marginalised and weakened. On the other side, many sociologists turned away from psychiatry and the epidemiological study of mental health problems and increasingly restricted their interest to social theor

Screening for alcohol abuse in primary care: current status and research needs.

Alcohol dependence and abuse are current problems for about 10% of the American population. Patients with alcohol involvement are over-represented in primary care settings. However, a number of these patients may not be detected as being alcohol abusing/dependent by their physicians. Current alcohol screening measures are reviewed. It is likely that a systematic combination of psychosocial self-report data and biomedical information can improve detection of alcohol-abusing patients. Future directions for primary care research include further development of psychosocial screening measures, dete

An overview of biohazards associated with nonhuman primates.

Because of their close phylogenetic relationship, human and nonhuman primates share susceptibility to many pathogens which do not affect lower animals. This similarity, which makes them invaluable models for studying human infectious diseases, also makes primate animals potentially dangerous to work with. The biohazards inherent in the use of nonhuman primates in biomedical research are zoonoses, injuries, and infectious agents introduced by study protocols. This review addresses the various kinds of parasites, fungi, rickettsiae, spirochetes, and viral agents found naturally occurring, or exp…

Advances in the application of bone turnover markers for pediatric growth and developmental disorders: a review.

Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are biomedical indicators used to assess the bone metabolism processes reflecting the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. During childhood and adolescence, bone metabolism is highly active, leading to distinct levels and trends of BTMs compared with those of adults. BTMs correlate significantly with age, gender and environmental factors, making them valuable for evaluating bone health and developmental trajectories in pediatric populations. Due to the non-invasive characters and dynamic monitoring capabilities, BTMs are increasingly employed in research and cl

System-wide approaches to antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial resistance in the UK: the AMR-X framework.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens human, animal, and environmental health. Acknowledging the urgency of addressing AMR, an opportunity exists to extend AMR action-focused research beyond the confines of an isolated biomedical paradigm. An AMR learning system, AMR-X, envisions a national network of health systems creating and applying optimal use of antimicrobials on the basis of their data collected from the delivery of routine clinical care. AMR-X integrates traditional AMR discovery, experimental research, and applied research with continuous analysis of pathogens, antimicrobial uses,

A bill of rights for patients with obstetric fistula.

According to the seven categories of vulnerability proposed by Kipnis (cognitive, juridical, deferential, medical, allocational, social, and infrastructural), and the four generally accepted principles of biomedical ethics (respect, beneficence, non-maleficence, and fairness), women with obstetric fistulas are an exceptionally vulnerable population. Therefore, they merit special consideration in both clinical care and research settings. Adoption of a formal bill of rights for patients with fistula similar to the one proposed in the present report should be encouraged at all facilities where th

The effect of treatment with crotapotin on the evolution of experimental autoimmune neuritis induced in Lewis rats.

Biomedical research in which venom components are being investigated for their potential as novel therapeutic agents has emerged as an interesting option. Crotapotin, which is purified from the venom of the rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus, has been described as an anti-inflammatory agent that acts on the innate arm of the immune response. Here we have demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of crotapotin significantly reduces the severity of experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN), an experimental model for Guillain-Barré syndrome. The reduction of the severity of the disease …

Maximum likelihood estimation of two-level latent variable models with mixed continuous and polytomous data.

Two-level data with hierarchical structure and mixed continuous and polytomous data are very common in biomedical research. In this article, we propose a maximum likelihood approach for analyzing a latent variable model with these data. The maximum likelihood estimates are obtained by a Monte Carlo EM algorithm that involves the Gibbs sampler for approximating the E-step and the M-step and the bridge sampling for monitoring the convergence. The approach is illustrated by a two-level data set concerning the development and preliminary findings from an AIDS preventative intervention for Filipina…

Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran (the PERSIAN Cohort Study): Rationale, Objectives, and Design.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 76% of deaths in Iran, and this number is on the rise, in parallel with global rates. Many risk factors associated with NCDs are preventable; however, it is first necessary to conduct observational studies to identify relevant risk factors and the most appropriate approach to controlling them. Iran is a multiethnic country; therefore, in 2014 the Ministry of Health and Medical Education launched a nationwide cohort study-Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran (PERSIAN)-in order to identify the most prevalent NCDs among Iran's ethnic gro

Determinants of a subject's decision to participate in clinical anesthesia research.

BACKGROUND: A top priority for research studies is to ensure that potential participants receive adequate information to make a truly informed decision. Understanding patient experiences with the recruitment process may identify areas for improvement in the consent process. We examined which factors were associated with the decision to consent in a clinical research study. METHODS: Patients scheduled for elective surgery were asked to complete a questionnaire about the consent process, immediately after being approached to participate in an anesthesia-related research study. Sociodemographic

Viewing Focus Groups Through a Critical Incident Lens.

Scholars often do not describe in detail the complex process of conducting focus groups, including what happens when they take unexpected turns. A critical incident lens provides a framework for better analyzing and understanding what actually happens during focus group sessions. Using a critical incident approach, we examine our experiences of carrying out focus groups about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine with vaccine-eligible adolescent girls and parents/caregivers of vaccine-eligible adolescent girls in New Mexico. The critical incident lens allowed us to productively explore the co

stabel: An R package for variable selection and prediction in high-dimensional cross-sectional data.

Variable selection is crucial in high-dimensional biomedical research, yet many methods are unstable and select irrelevant variables. Stability selection improves robustness but may miss important variables and does not offer prediction. To address these limitations, we developed stabel, an R package, a framework that integrates multiple stability selection procedures with diverse models and subsampling strategies, followed by ensemble-based prediction. The package supports binary and continuous outcomes, offering LASSO, sparseSVM, and random forest for variable selection, and any prediction a…

Modalities of Enfleshment: Albinism and the Limits of Biosociality in Tanzania.

Media and humanitarian discourses surrounding violence against people with albinism in Tanzania have fostered forms of biosocial relatedness and public recognition. Yet albinism does not consistently consolidate into a stable biosocial identity. Drawing on ethnographic research with Farida, Baraka and other interlocutors with albinism, this article ethnographically develops the concept of "modalities of enfleshment" to attend to how albinism is lived through shifting interpretations and embodied experiences. In this paper, I argue that the condition offers a case study for understanding how bo
