Short-Term Changes in Metabolically Healthy Overweight/Obesity Status Impact the Susceptibility to Type 2 Diabetes in Chinese Adults.

PURPOSE: Changes in transition from metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO) to metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO) are associated with the risk for cardiometabolic complications. This study aims to investigate the effects of short-term dynamic changes in body mass index (BMI) and metabolic status on the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and to identify biological predictors for the MHO-to-MUO transition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 4604 subjects from the REACTION study were included for a 3-year follow-up. Subjects were categorized based on their BMI and metabolic syndrom

Gray matter volume increases induced by intragastric balloon treatment and their associations with neuroinflammation: A magnetic resonance study.

OBJECTIVE: We simultaneously performed structural MRI, 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and whole-body hydration status assessment to evaluate brain changes in patients with morbid obesity treated with intra-gastric balloon (IGB) for six months. We asked, if changes in myo-inositol ratios (marker of neuroinflammation) are related to brain volume increases accompanying IGB-induced weight loss. METHODS: Twenty five patients with morbid obesity (OB, 43.9 ± 11.8 years, BMI = 49.1 ± 7.2, 12 females, 9 without co-morbid conditions) were treated with IGB for six months. They underwent magnetic re

The epigenetic clock and physical development during childhood and adolescence: longitudinal analysis from a UK birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Statistical models that use an individual's DNA methylation levels to estimate their age (known as epigenetic clocks) have recently been developed, with 96% correlation found between epigenetic and chronological age. We postulate that differences between estimated and actual age [age acceleration (AA)] can be used as a measure of developmental age in early life. METHODS: We obtained DNA methylation measures at three time points (birth, age 7 years and age 17 years) in 1018 children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Using an online calculator, we es

Exploring transgender adolescents' body image concerns and disordered eating: Semi-structured interviews with nine gender minority youth.

Transgender adolescents (TGAs) face many of the same sociocultural and biological influences on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating as cisgender peers. Additionally, TGAs experience unique body- and gender-related concerns. The purpose of this study is to explore the nuances of gender identity, gender transitioning, body image, and disordered eating among TGAs. Case summaries and a synthesis of key themes are presented from interviews with nine TGAs aged 16-20 (Mage = 17). All participants reported engaging in at least one behavior to change their weight or shape. Consistent with a theo

The body as art.

For millennia people have altered the appearance of their bodies with cosmetics, jewellery, tattoos, piercings, and other surgical procedures. It would appear that they wish to conform to a perceived 'ideal body', although the actual appearance of such a body is subject to temporal, cultural and geographical change. In contemporary society the media are largely responsible for providing the yardsticks against which individual body shape is measured. Today the desired form is generally young, slim, tanned and blemish-free. Sadly, dissatisfaction with body image can be the source of great unhapp

Effect of a ketogenic diet, time-restricted eating, or alternate-day fasting on weight loss in adults with obesity: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating the effects of novel, alternative dietary approaches for weight loss compared with the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the effects of diets with varying ketogenic potential, i.e., a very-low carbohydrate diet (ketogenic diet, KD), time-restricted eating (TRE), and modified alternate-day fasting (mADF) on weight loss in obesity, compared with a MedDiet. METHODS: Three-month, parallel-arm, randomized clinical trial including 160 adults with obesity. Participants were randomized to 1 of 5 groups: control (MedDiet), KD, early TRE (eTRE

Association between body roundness index and overactive bladder: results from the NHANES 2005-2018.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: An increasing amount of research has indicated obesity greatly affects individuals with overactive bladder (OAB). However, traditional anthropometric methods present challenges in accurately assessing the likelihood of OAB. Hence, this study's objective was to identify the correlation between the body roundness index (BRI) and OAB. METHODS: The research included 12,401 individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey spanning 2005-2018. The correlation between BRI and OAB was explored by using weighted multiple logistic regression and we

Weight loss and reduced body mass index: a critical issue in children with multiorgan chronic graft-versus-host disease.

Weight loss and malnutrition are major problems in patients with chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In adults, low body mass index (BMI) is a predictor for mortality; however, weight loss and BMI have not been studied in pediatric chronic GVHD. A retrospective study on 18 children with extensive chronic GVHD was completed. Median age at SCT was 12.3 (range 0.6-23) years; age at chronic GVHD diagnosis was 12.5 (1-23) years. Patients with multiorgan involvement had a mean maximal decrease in BMI of 20.9% and most dropped below 10th percentile in expected weight-for-age. This change in BMI

Dietary Fructooligosaccharide Is Associated with Improved Insulin Resistance, Reduced Romboutsia ilealis Abundance, and Modulation of GLP-1 Production in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity disrupts glucose homeostasis and insulin signaling, partly through altered gut hormone secretion and intestinal inflammation. Our previous work demonstrated that fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic fiber, suppressed colonic inflammation, and modulated gut microbiota when administered with vitamin D supplementation. However, the effects of FOS on metabolic alterations, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) production under obesogenic stimulation remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of FOS on insulin resistance and GLP-1 production in high-fat diet (HFD)-
