Effect of an Intensive Nurse Home Visiting Program on Postpartum Contraceptive Use and Birth Spacing: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an intensive nurse home visiting program on postpartum contraceptive use and birth spacing among individuals with a first pregnancy who were eligible for Medicaid insurance in South Carolina. METHODS: We conducted a nonblinded, randomized controlled trial of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), an established intensive home visiting program that provides prenatal and postpartum home visits through 2 years after childbirth. The trial included patients who were eligible for Medicaid insurance with a first pregnancy at less than 28 weeks of gestation between A

Radiation dose reduction in pediatric computed tomography (CT) using deep convolutional neural network denoising.

AIM: We evaluated the quality of noncontrast chest computed tomography (CT) for pediatric patients at two dose levels with and without denoising using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty children underwent noncontrast chest CTs for "chronic cough" using a routine dose (RD) protocol. Images were reconstructed using iterative reconstruction (IR). A validated noise insertion method was used to simulate 20% dose (TD) data for each case. A deep CNN model was trained and validated on 10 cases and then applied to the remaining 30 cases. Three certificate of qualif

Mortality associated with polymyalgia rheumatica in the United States in the 1999-2020 period: a multiple-cause-of-death study.

OBJECTIVE: Multicause-of-death methods were used to analyze mortality and leading causes of death associated with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in the United States from 1999 to 2020. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Data analysis system and selected death certificates that listed PMR as the cause of death based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) category code. Relevant mortality rates, number of deaths and historical trends were analyzed. The number of PMR-r

[The analysis of age dynamics of causes of mortality of population of elderly age groups as reserve of maintaining population of older able-bodied age].

The article analyzes age dynamics of initial causes of death according to records in medical death certificates of population of older age groups. Materials and methods. The records of causes of death of 34.914 persons aged 60 years and older were used as primary source of information. The initial cause of death was determined according to the ICD-10 rules. The rate of registration by reason of death was calculated as intensive value per 100 deaths in concrete age and sex group. Each cause was coded according to the ICD-10 rules (revision 2014-2016). The belonging to group was determined by fi

Predictors and prognosis of population-based subjective cognitive decline: longitudinal evidence from the Caerphilly Prospective Study (CaPS).

OBJECTIVES: To understand associations between the subjective experience of cognitive decline and objective cognition. This subjective experience is often conceptualised as an early step towards neurodegeneration, but this has not been scrutinised at the population level. An alternative explanation is poor meta-cognition, the extreme of which is seen in functional cognitive disorder (FCD). DESIGN: Prospective cohort (Caerphilly Prospective Study). SETTING: Population-based, South Wales, UK. PARTICIPANTS: This men-only study began in 1979; 1225 men participated at an average age of 73 in 200

Identification of the molecular subgroups in Alzheimer's disease by transcriptomic data.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous pathological disease with genetic background accompanied by aging. This inconsistency is present among molecular subtypes, which has led to diagnostic ambiguity and failure in drug development. We precisely distinguished patients of AD at the transcriptome level. METHODS: We collected 1,240 AD brain tissue samples collected from the GEO dataset. Consensus clustering was used to identify molecular subtypes, and the clinical characteristics were focused on. To reveal transcriptome differences among subgroups, we certificated specific upreg

34 Decreased opportunities to approach next of kin for eye donation to the liverpool research eye bank due to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The Liverpool Research Eye Bank (LREB) specialises in collection and storage of ocular tissues for use in projects investigating ophthalmic diseases and potential treatments. In collaboration with the Liverpool Eye Donation Centre (LEDC), we collect whole eyes from cadaveric donors. The LEDC screens potential donors and approaches next-of-kin for consent on behalf of the LREB; however, there are factors which reduce the pool of donors such as transplant suitability, time constraints, medical contraindications and other complications. During the past 21 months, COVID-19 has been a b

Prevalence of gestational diabetes and recourse to postpartum oral glucose tolerance test in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy).

OBJECTIVE: The occurrence of gestational diabetes (GDM) is increasing worldwide, and such a diagnosis is important for women's health beyond pregnancy. Therefore, many guidelines suggest the re-evaluation of glucose tolerance with a postpartum oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in women with GDM. This study reports the prevalence of GDM and the use of a postpartum OGTT in women assisted at maternity units in the Autonomous Province of Trento in the years 2017-2018, investigating the socio-demographic and health-care variables that can facilitate access to the test. STUDY DESIGN: For the diagn

Childhood cancer survival and avoided deaths in Australia, 1983-2016.

BACKGROUND: Large improvements in childhood cancer survival have been reported over recent decades. Data from cancer registries have the advantage of providing a 'whole of population' approach to gauge the success of cancer control efforts. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate recent survival estimates for children diagnosed with cancer Australia and to examine the extent of changes in survival over the last 35 years. For the first time, we also estimated the number of deaths among Australian children that were potentially avoided due to improvements in survival. METHODS: A r

Genome stability of the vaccine strain VACΔ6.

Due to cessation of mass smallpox vaccination in 1980, the collective immunity of humans against orthopoxvirus infections has virtually been lost. Therefore, the risk of spreading zoonotic human orthopoxvirus infections caused by monkeypox and cowpox viruses has increased in the world. First-generation smallpox vaccines based on Vaccinia virus (VAC) are reactogenic and therefore not suitable for mass vaccination under current conditions. This necessitates the development of modern safe live vaccines based on VAC using genetic engineering. We created the VACΔ6 strain by transient dominant selec

Implementation of EACS vaccination recommendations among people living with HIV.

OBJECTIVES: With modern combination antiretroviral Treatment (cART) a normal life expectancy among people living with HIV (PLWH) has become reality if started early enough prior to the onset of more pronounced immunodeficiency. Therefore, prevention measures against other infectious diseases among this vulnerable group have gained increased attention. Indeed, the EACS guidelines recommend vaccinations against HAV, HBV, HPV, Influenza, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and VZV in HIV-infected adults. METHODS: All PLWH under cART attending our ID outpatient clinic between April t

Survey upon the Reasons of COVID-19 Vaccination Acceptance in Romania.

AIM: The present study aims to observe the reasons for which the participants have chosen to uptake one of the COVID-19 vaccines approved in Romania. Thus, it will help us to determine whether the reasons are medical in nature, with the respondents' scope to stay healthy, or if there are other motivations. High rates of vaccine acceptance are essential in the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic, and trust indicators in other inoculations may be vital for the good management of the vaccination campaign. METHODS: The research consisted in applying an online questionnaire in the period Januar

A community-based service enhancement model of training and employing Ear Health Facilitators to address the crisis in ear and hearing health of Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory, the Hearing for Learning Initiative (the HfLI): study protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Almost all Aboriginal children in remote communities have persistent bilateral otitis media affecting hearing and learning throughout early childhood and school years, with consequences for social and educational outcomes, and later employment opportunities. Current primary health care and specialist services do not have the resources to meet the complex needs of these children. METHOD/DESIGN: This stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial will allocate 18 communities to one of five 6-monthly intervention start dates. Stratification will be by region and population size.
