Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is fundamentally a syndrome composed of symptoms (primarily of emotional dysregulation) and a number of true personality traits (such as inordinate anger, impulsivity, and a tendency to stress-related paranoid ideation). Whereas schizotypal personality disorder, with its cognitive peculiarities (ideas of reference, odd beliefs, eccentric speech), is closely linked as a genetic condition-"borderline" to the major condition schizophrenia-BPD is less closely linked to bipolar disorder. Some cases of BPD are linked genetically to and are in the "border" of bip

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory dysfunction is a key behavioral and cognitive phenotype of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Both disorders show neuropsychological deficits and fronto-striatal dysfunction during tasks of motor response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. This study investigates differences and commonalities in functional neural networks mediating inhibitory control between adolescents with ADHD and those with OCD to identify disorder-specific neurofunctional markers that distinguish these two inhibitory disorders.

AIMS: Neurocognitive functions in pathological gambling have relevance for the aetiology and treatment of this disorder, yet are poorly understood. This study therefore investigated neurocognitive impairments of executive functions in a group of carefully screened Diagnostic and Statistical Manual version IV (DSM-IV-TR) pathological gamblers. Performance was compared to a group of normal control participants. To study the specificity of these neurocognitive deficits, a substance dependence group (alcohol dependence) and an impulse control disorder group (Tourette syndrome) were included.

Trazodone is an established antidepressant that is prescribed frequently as an off-label hypnotic with wide acceptance among psychiatrists. Owing to its atypical mixed serotonergic and adrenolytic pharmacology, trazodone has been investigated in a number of disorders besides depression and insomnia, including anxiety disorders, chronic pain, frontal cognitive dysfunctions, erectile dysfunction and others. Clinical studies using subjective and objective measures generally tend to support its efficacy as a hypnotic in depressed subjects. Various other attributes of trazodone, including interacti

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback is a psychophysiological intervention grounded in autonomic regulation theory, with increasing evidence linking vagal control to higher-order cognitive processes, particularly executive functioning. Adults with neurological conditions frequently exhibit autonomic dysregulation alongside cognitive impairment, suggesting HRV biofeedback as a potentially valuable adjunct in neurorehabilitation.
AIM: This systematic review aimed to critically examine the effects of HRV biofeedback on cognitive outcomes in adults with neurological disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is a rare upper motor neuron neurodegenerative disorder whose cognitive profile, particularly at early stages, remains incompletely defined. We aimed to characterize cognitive and behavioral features of PLS at diagnosis and compare them with predominant upper motor neuron amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PUMN-ALS) and healthy controls (HCs).
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PLS between 2007 and 2021 were identified from the population-based Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta ALS Register. Diagnoses were established according to consensus criteria, including ea

OBJECTIVE: While psychiatric disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety) are well-established predictors of suicidal ideation (SI) in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), the roles of other psychological and cognitive factors remain underexplored. This study examined associations between SI and emotion-processing difficulties, coping strategies, psychological resilience, and cognitive functioning after moderate-severe TBI.
METHOD: This was a secondary analysis of data from 106 individuals with moderate-severe TBI. SI and emotional distress were assessed using the Inventory of Depression a

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and poorer pulmonary function are highly prevalent psychiatric and medical conditions. In the present study, we tested for the individual, additive, and modifying associations of PTSD symptomatology and pulmonary function with cognitive performance.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 1,401 World Trade Center (WTC) responders (mean age = 53, SD = 8 years, 92% males) participated in the study. Cogstate assessment measured cognitive performance. PTSD symptomatology was measured using the trauma-specific version of th

OBJECTIVE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is still the most effective treatment of severe and therapy-refractory major depressive disorder. Cognitive side effects are the major disadvantage of ECT. Cognitive deficits are generally temporary in nature and may be mediated by the hippocampus. Recent studies have shown a temporary increase in hippocampal volume and a temporary decrease in cognitive functioning post-ECT compared with pre-ECT. This study investigates whether these volumetric changes are related to changes in cognitive functioning after ECT.

The peripheral hearing alterations and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) associated with age-related hearing loss (ARHL), may impact cognitive disorders in older age. In older age, ARHL is also a significant marker for frailty, another age-related multidimensional clinical condition with a nonspecific state of vulnerability, reduced multisystem physiological reserve, and decreased resistance to different stressors (i.e. sensorial impairments, psychosocial stress, diseases, injuries). The multidimensional nature of frailty required an approach based on different pathogeneses because t

Background: Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed to older adults in primary care despite concerns regarding their potential cognitive adverse outcomes. Evidence on the association between benzodiazepine use and cognitive impairment remains inconsistent and is limited in middle-income countries, particularly in routine primary care settings. Objectives: To evaluate the association between benzodiazepine use and cognitive impairment among older adults in a primary care hospital in Mexico and to explore clinical factors associated with benzodiazepine prescribing patterns. Methods: A cross-sectio

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that conventional neurofeedback and cognitive modification treatments have numerous psychological benefits for patients with substance use disorders. However, the effectiveness of LORETA (Low-Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography) Z Score Neurofeedback (LZNFB) and cognitive rehabilitation therapy in reducing opioid craving has not been investigated. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of LZNFB and cognitive rehabilitation therapy with Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) in reducing craving in patients with opioid use diso

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders associated with disturbances in communication, social interactions, cognition and affect. ASD are also accompanied by complex movement disorders, including ataxia. A special focus of recent research in this area is made on the striatum and the cerebellum, two structures known not only to control movement but also to be involved in cognitive functions such as memory and language. Dysfunction within the motor system may be associated with abnormal movements in ASD that are translated into ataxia, abnormal pat

Secondary to an ischemic cerebellar lesion in the territory of the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), a 62-year-old man suffered relevant neuropsychological dysfunction. This included disturbances of executive functions, impaired visuospatial memory, blunting of affect, inappropriate behaviour, and linguistic difficulties. In this case report, we discuss the clinical presentation of so-called cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome.

Huntington's disease provides a unique model to examine issues of long-term and palliative care for a younger and more mobile population who remain institutionalized longer than other nursing home residents. A lack of community-based alternatives for young families, and the need for highly complex care planning encourage long term care placement mid-way in the disease process. Despite the need for a body of knowledge specific to environmental enrichment and therapeutic strategies for improving quality of life for people in the later stages of Huntington's disease, there is no published data in

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a globally recognized neurodegenerative disorder that severely impairs cognitive function and imposes substantial psychological and financial burdens on patients and their families. The hallmark pathological features of AD include progressive neurodegeneration, extracellular beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaque accumulation, and intracellular hyperphosphorylated tau protein tangles. However, recent studies have identified a subset of patients exhibiting cognitive resilience, characterized by a slower cognitive decline or the preservation of high cognitive function despite the p

BACKGROUND: The concept of bipolar spectrum disorders has opened therapeutic opportunities for patients with atypical and complex affective conditions. The literature has recently described several commonalities in pathophysiological processes of bipolar disorders and dementia. However, this connection has been insufficiently appreciated at the clinical level, in part because affective dysregulation in the elderly and, particularly in the dementia setting, is typically attributed either to secondary depressive states or otherwise relegated to a neurologically understandable behavioral complica

Cognitive reserve (CR) is essential in reducing natural cognitive decline. Identified in neurodegenerative pathologies, it also increasingly plays a role in the development of the symptomatic processes of numerous psychiatric pathologies. CR could help identify subgroups of elderly patients affected by primary psychosis and mood disorders and evaluate their correlation with diagnostic and therapeutic trajectories. Our observational study assessed the correlation between cognitive reserve and cognitive and psychopathological trajectories in a group of elderly inpatients in health residential ce
