[IgM diagnosis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections by means of the immunofluorescent method].

Sera were investigated of patients possibly suffering from an EBV infection, without showing clinical features characteristic of infectious mononucleosis. The method of investigation was the detection of antibodies of the IgM-type by means of the immunofluorescent method using a three-layer technique. Diagnosis of EBV infection was established in 10 out of 90 patients with facial palsy, one with myelitis, one with sudden deafness and one with polyneuritis. In addition, 4 out of 19 cases of hepatitis (Hbs-negative) proved to be due to infection with EBV. The specific IgM test proved to be super…

The furosemid test for Menière's disease.

In a previous report it was suggested that intravenous administration of furosemid followed by a comparative caloric test (the furosemid test) could be utilized for detection of endolymphatic hydrops (Kitahara et al., 1973). As a result of the further application of the furosemid test upon 161 patients with vertigo, positive results were observed in 80% of patients with typical Menière's disease, 6% of atypical Menière's disease, 42% with labyrinthine syphilis and 27% with sudden deafness. In patients with labyrinthitis, results were negative. It is thus concluded that the furosemid test provi…

Case report: A case report of Alport syndrome caused by a novel mutation of COL4A5.

Alport syndrome (#308940) is an X-linked genetic disease with clinical manifestations, such as hematuria, proteinuria, renal insufficiency, and end-stage renal disease. The disease is characterized by the thinning of the glomerular basement membrane in the early stages and the thickening of the glomerular basement membrane in the late stages and may be associated with ocular lesions and varying degrees of sensorineural deafness. Herein, we report a case of Alport syndrome caused by a de novo mutation in COL4A5. The patient was a young male with clinical manifestations of hematuria and massive …

The Spoken Language Checklist: A User-Friendly Normed Language Acquisition Checklist.

There are many variables having an impact on the spoken language acquisition of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children; therefore, it is critical for parents and professionals to have appropriate tools to monitor language acquisition. The Spoken Language Checklist (SLC) was developed to monitor and identify developmental milestones in a user-friendly checklist format that includes norms. The availability of the SLC will help parents and professionals to monitor the spoken language development of DHH children and provide interventions that should any delays be observed. Recognizing these delay

[Acute complications during middle ear surgery: part 2: Accidents in classical stapes surgery and their solutions].

Stapes surgery is remarkably different from regular middle ear surgery. The inner ear space has to be opened and the risk of postoperative deterioration of hearing and deafness is much higher. Peculiarities involve submerged parts of the foot plate into the vestibulum, the overhanging facial nerve with or without bony covering, bleeding from the mucosa, and problems involving the chorda tympani. Labyrinthine reactions during or post surgery are common. Important is the question of whether or when the piston should be removed. Rare cases such as a gusher with a wide connection between perilymph…

[Language delay in children with chronic suppurative otitis media].

The chronic serous otitis media is a well known cause of fluctuant moderated conduction deafness in childhood but not well studied in Castillian speaking areas, as a cause of alterations in the acquisition of language. In the present study we evaluate the chronic serous otitis media as a cause of alterations in the development of the language in childhood. We studied the semantic development level in a group of 18 four years old children affected of chronic serous otitis media of more than one year evolution. The incidence of alterations was of 27.7%. We discuss the results obtained and we pro…

Insight into the microphthalmia gene.

The murine microphthalmia gene (mi) is one of the last multi-allelic, classic coat-colour genes to be cloned in the mouse and, similar to many of these genes, encodes an exciting molecule that is is involved in multiple developmental processes. The existence of the numerous alleles has allowed the molecular dissection of the function of the MI bHLH-Zip transcription factor in vivo and offers a unique opportunity to understand the function of a multimeric transcription factor throughout development and in many tissues. It is also the gene mutated in some patients with the human deafness syndrom…

Treacher-Collins syndrome. Management of major and minor anomalies of the ear.

12 patients suffering from a Treacher-Collins syndrome, or mandibulo-facial dysostosis, were operated on in the Nijmegen University Hospital between 1960 and 1990. An early diagnosis is generally reached when there is a congenital atresia of the auditory canal. Auditory rehabilitation with a conventional prosthesis of the bone or a BAHA is preferable to surgical reconstruction. In minor cases, deafness must be screened as early as possible, with a bone hearing aid prosthesis. Surgical exploration can be performed at best as the age of 10, but the chances of success are less than those of other…

Usher's syndrome.

Usher's syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition of congenital sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa. Other abnormalities are present but inconsistently, suggesting the genetic concepts of pleiotropy and heterogeneity. Accordingly, several classifications have been suggested. Clinical findings involve the visual, auditory and vestibular systems. The identification of the carrier state would allow for more timely and accurate genetic counselling. A screening program for Usher's syndrome appears feasible. This would allow affected, deaf individuals to prepare themselves for the

[Prevalence and diagnostic value of so-called neurologic soft signs in a larger sample of severely hearing impaired 10 to 13-year-old children].

262 severely hard-off hearing and deaf 10-13 years old children were screened by a short, standardised neurological examination consisting of 7 items. The results showed a high rate of socalled soft signs especially in form of associated movements. It seemed remarkable that the rate of soft signs did not diminish over the age range examined. Statistical relations of these results to other variables of the whole study (gross motor coordination, hyperkinetic behaviour, global psychiatric ratings) support the hypothesis that soft signs are predictors of psychiatric morbidity in general.

[Current and retrospective problems of treatment of occupational hearing loss of the cochlear type].

The prevalence of occupational hearing impairment constantly increases, thus there are more and more people who become deaf and disabled from carrying on their jobs and normal social contacts. The technical efforts aimed at limiting exposure to noise, as well as medical prophylactic activities are not efficient enough. Therefore the authors analyse the possibilities of occupational hearing impairment treatment. Pharmacologic preparations likely to affect the temporary and permanent threshold shift, are considered. Within operative treatment, microsurgical technique of implanting microelectrode

Recurrent Neural Networks for Mexican Sign Language Interpretation in Healthcare Services.

In Mexico, the Deaf community faces persistent communication barriers that restrict their integration and access to essential services, particularly in healthcare. Even though approximately two million individuals use Mexican Sign Language (MSL) as their primary form of communication, technological tools for supporting effective interaction remain limited. While recent research in sign-language recognition has led to important advances for several languages, work focused on MSL, particularly for healthcare scenarios, remains scarce. To address this gap, this study introduces a health-oriented

Auditory Rehabilitation in Single-Sided-Deafened Patients after Surgery to the Cerebellopontine Angle for Vestibular Schwannoma: What Is the Patient's Choice?

Background: Surgical resection of vestibular schwannomas (VS) can be responsible for single-sided deafness (SSD). Hearing restoration can be a challenge both for the otolaryngologist and the patient. Patients and Methods: In a retrospective series, we analyzed the charts of SSD patients operated on for VS from 2005-2021, checking which type of hearing rehabilitation was chosen. All patients who wanted a hearing restoration underwent a hearing in noise test (HINT) in a stereo auditorium with and without a bone-anchored hearing device (BAHD) worn with a headband on the deaf side. Then, they had …

Identity change of late-deafened adults after receiving cochlear implants.

PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to understand how adults reconceptualise their identity when experiencing hearing loss as an adult, and how their identity might change with a cochlear implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an online survey administered through cochlear implant social media groups, with follow-up semi-structured interviews, participants answered questions about their hearing loss and cochlear implant experiences. Forty-four people answered the survey and 16 participated in an in-depth interview. All were older than 18 years, once had heard, became deafened in adulthood an

Satellite habilitation centres following cochlear implantation - Are they the way ahead in improving outcomes in developing countries?

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation is a safe surgery for restoration of hearing in profoundly deaf children. Following cochlear implantation, children undergo rehabilitation (or 'habilitation' for those without previous hearing). The device is programmed after the surgery, so that the user can hear sounds through it and through rehabilitation training, the heard sounds are made to understand. OBJECTIVE: Our study was aimed at analysing the role of satellite habilitation centres following cochlear implantation by analysing the outcomes following habilitation and comparing it with the outcomes
