PURPOSE: Posterior Interosseous Nerve (PIN) syndrome results from compressive neuropraxia of the deep branch of the radial nerve (DBRN) at or around the Arcade of Frohse (AOF), manifesting purely as motor deficits. Accurate localization of the nerve remains challenging due to limited surface landmark data. This study aimed to establish reliable geometric surface landmarks to guide clinicians in diagnosing and managing PIN syndrome.
METHODS: Sixteen upper limb specimens from eight cadavers (7 male, 1 female) underwent standardized dissection. Key measurements were recorded, including lengths o

METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty consecutive patients who had an indication for a free radial forearm flap (FRFF) reconstruction were included in the study. Patients with scars on their arms, a history of extremity lymphedema, metastatic disease, or axillary node dissection were excluded. The Transonic® Microvascular Flow Probe was used to measure l …

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided percutaneous irrigation of calcific tendinopathy (US-PICT) applied out of the shoulder, comparing its effectiveness to US-PICT of the rotator cuff.
METHODS: Patients subjected to US-PICT for extra-shoulder calcific tendinitis (Case Group) were compared to those subjected to US-PICT of the rotator cuff (Control Group). We had pre-procedure Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain score, 1- and 3-month VAS of patients of the Case Group, pre-procedure and 3-month VAS of patients of the Control Group.
RESULTS: The Case Group consist

There is a paucity of literature documenting the cadaveric muscle thickness of pronator quadratus. We measured the width and depth of this muscle bilaterally in 15 cadavers. There was a significant difference in thickness between male and female cadavers, but the width was proportional to radius length.

This study assessed the lead and trail arm peak and average extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) muscle activity in association with tri-planar angular velocities of the lead and trail wrists during the golf swing. Fifteen sub-elite, male right-handed golfers (Mage = 34.7 years ±13.3, Mhandicap = 1.5 ± 2.2) were recruited to execute five shots each with their pitching wedge, 7-iron and driver clubs in an indoor golf simulator. Surface electromyography (EMG) sensors were placed over the ECU muscle belly and inertial measurement unit sensors were placed bi-laterally on the distal forearm and dorsum of t…

BACKGROUND: Repetitive piano movements have been associated with playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) such as forearm myalgia and symptoms of lateral epicondylopathy. Despite the high prevalence of PRMDs among pianists, there is poor understanding regarding the underlying physiological mechanisms. Intramuscular oxygenation may play a role in the development of PRMDs. Therefore, this observational study aimed to explore the effect variability of playing piano repertoire on the oxygenation of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB).
METHODS: Surface electromyography (EMG) activit…

METHODS: Electronic medical records of the largest health provider in Israel, which provides health services to more than 50% of the population, were reviewed for pulled elbow cases between 2005 and 2020. Patients aged 4.5 months to 7 years were included. Demographic information, the discipline of the treating physician, and acquisition of elbow radiographs were gathered.
RESULTS: A total of 4357 patients, 62.8% girls, were included. The average body mass index was 16.1 (SD, 1.2). Most patients were from communities in the upper half of the socioeconomic status clusters 6 to 10 (64.63%). Most

BACKGROUND: The radial arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare complication occurring after transradial cardiac catheterization. Patients with AVF typically present with signs of venous dilation, such as swelling or palpable thrills. However, neurological complications secondary to radial AVFs are rare. This paper reported a rare case of ischemic steal syndrome that occurred 11 months after the transradial cardiac catheterization, most likely as a consequence of radial arteriovenous fistula.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper described a case of a 73-year-old female, who complained of right forearm …

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries are becoming increasingly common. The palmaris longus (PL) and gracilis (GR) tendons are the most common grafts used in UCL reconstructions. While clinical studies have demonstrated relatively similar outcomes for either graft, there is little quantitative data describing these grafts from a material perspective, specifically the mechanical and microstructural properties of these tissues and how they respond under dynamic loading. The purpose of this descriptive laboratory study was to quantify and compare the mechanical and microstructural properties o

CASE: A 51-year-old man presented with pain and paresthesias in the median nerve distribution and a subjective loss of grip strength. Imaging revealed a thrombosed persistent median artery in the carpal tunnel abutting the median nerve. The thrombosed portion of the artery was surgically excised, and the patient experienced resolution of symptoms.
CONCLUSION: Persistent median artery thrombosis is rare and can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Ultrasound is a useful tool for diagnosis and appropriate surgical planning. Although treatment with systemic anticoagulation is an option, surgical excisi

INTRODUCTION: Posterior interosseous nerve syndrome, a branch of the radial nerve at the level of the forearm, is characterized by the motor function loss of some or all of the muscles innervated distally.
CLINICAL CASE: A 26-year-old male with a history of proximal radius fracture associated to radial nerve injury, treated with osteosynthesis 7 years earlier, with full recovery, who currently presented intense pain 4 cm distal to the radial head, accompanied by paralysis of Extensor pollicis longus, Extesnor pollicis brevis and Abductor pollicis longus, with paresis of the Extensor indicis p…

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound-guided thread release (USGTR) is a minimally invasive technique with excellent clinical outcomes currently used in clinical practice to divide the transverse carpal ligament in carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study is to determine whether this technique can be modified for use in large anatomical compartments in soft embalmed cadaveric models.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two operators adapted the USGTR technique for use in muscular compartments of the forearms and legs in a single soft embalmed cadaver. An iterative approach was used to adapt and improve the techn…

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous lobular capillary haemangioma (IVLCH) is a rare benign lesion with minimal published reports containing a description of its appearance at medical imaging. We present the ultrasound and MRI images of a histologically proven IVLCH and provide the first review of the imaging findings reported in the literature.
METHODS: The imaging findings of a case of IVLCH are presented. A PubMed search of English language articles was performed from 1966 to October 2016, and all relevant papers were reviewed. Imaging findings from those papers are summarised.
RESULTS: Key features

PURPOSE: Mirror hand or ulnar dimelia is a rare and poorly studied congenital anomaly of the upper extremity. Understanding of its anatomy is limited by the rarity of the deformity and the variability in presentation. We present the case of an 80-year-old female donor with an incidental finding of mirror hand.
METHODS: Medical history indicated no record of any surgical procedures or interventions to the right upper extremity suggesting that the donor had lived an independent life without the need for prosthetic aids. Unfortunately, no record of a hand examination or any visit to a hand speci
