INTRODUCTION: Although the coracoid process seems to play an important anatomical role, there are few reports concerning fracture nonunion of the coracoid process (CN) and its disorders. Therefore, there is no widely accepted standard for the treatment of CN.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed and Scopus were searched using "scapular fracture" and "coracoid fracture" as search terms. The inclusion criteria were English full-text articles concerning coracoid fracture, and articles that described patient characteristics and presented appropriate images. The exclusion criteria were descriptive cases,

UNLABELLED: "Open-book" pelvic fractures associate a diastasis and/or a fracture of the pubic rami with a posterior pelvic disruption of the sacro-iliac joint. These uni or bilateral lesions are potentially lethal mainly due to associated injuries and massive pelvic hemorrhage. The most frequently injured arteries are parietal branch of the commune, internal or external arteries because of their proximity to the bone, the sacro-iliac joint and the inferior ligaments of the pelvis. The pelvic bone dislocation and the increase of pelvic volume facilitate blood effusion. The aim of this study was

Migration of orthopedic screws into the bladder is a rare postoperative complication following surgical fixation of pelvic fractures. We present a case of a 61-year-old man who sustained a type 3 anteroposterior compression injury with pubic symphysis diastasis, left sacroiliac joint dislocation, and lumbar spine transverse process fracture. At the time of presentation open-reduction internal fixation of his pubic symphysis and closed-reduction percutaneous screw fixation of the left sacroiliac joint was performed. At his 6 month post operative visit, the patient was seen for follow up and rep

One-stage or two-stage revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in periprosthetic joint infections has been at the center of scientific debate for many years. As regards two-stage revision TKA, cement spacers have a good infection control rate with successful results reportable up to 96%, though some studies describe related spacer complications such as stiffness and loss of bone stock. We report a case of a fracture close to the antibiotic-loaded cement spacer in a 74-year-old female patient. Due to the blood tests and high risk of infection, we performed a hybrid external fixator. Six months a

Dislocation of the elbow associated with radial head and coronoid fracture, the so-called "terrible triad" of the elbow, is challenging to treat and has a history of complicated outcomes. However, advances in the knowledge of elbow kinematics combined with improved implants and surgical techniques during the past few years have led to the development of standard surgical protocols. This review article analyses the results in 137 elbow triad injuries of five studies treated using the current protocols. These include fixation of the coronoid fracture, repair or replacement the radial head, and r

Aseptic osteonecrosis appears to be an infrequent adverse event after kyphoplasty which has not previously been reported. In the following, we present the case of a 73-year-old female who sustained a compression fracture of the first lumbar vertebra (L1) in a motor vehicle accident. The fracture was treated by kyphoplasty using PMMA cement. Three weeks after hospital discharge the patient was presented with increasing back pain. In imaging, dislocation of the PMMA cement could be shown combined with a total collapse of the L1 vertebra. The resulting significant kyphosis was first reduced by do

Maltracking of the patella component in total knee arthroplasty usually leads to complications such as subluxation, dislocation, fracture, excessive wear, or implant failure. After using a new posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty and a specific protocol for the patellofemoral articulation we determined the incidence of lateral retinacular release and patella complications. We retrospectively reviewed 255 consecutive primary posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasties with an anatomic femoral component and a three-peg offset-dome patella. Component alignment was achieved using Whites

AIM: Essex-Lopresti lesion (ELL) consists of a radial head fracture in combination with a rupture of the interosseous membrane and a dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint. In the case of radial head resection proximal migration of the radius occurs. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the treatment and outcome for chronic ELL.
METHOD: Altogether 6 patients with secondary ELL were detected and clinically reviewed. Therapy consisted of implantation of a silastic radial head prosthesis in 3 cases and ulna shortening in 2 other cases. One patient received both procedures. In t

We reviewed the outcomes of 24 cases (24 patients) of uncemented total hip arthroplasty done to treat secondary osteoarthritis due to quiescent previous infection. There were 16 men and eight women aged from 24 to 78 years (mean, 50 yr). Eight patients had proven or probable tuberculous infection and the other 16 patients had a past history of septic hip. The patients were followed for between 2.5 and 7 years (mean, 4.5 yr). According to the Harris hip rating system, 18 of the patients had excellent or good results. Three patients had a preoperative erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 40 mm/h or

Twenty-six patients with blunt trauma of the cervical spine, producing a subluxation from a "locked" or "perched" facet, facet destruction with evidence of instability, or a fracture involving the foramen transversarium, underwent preoperative vertebral angiography to determine the incidence of vertebral artery injury. The cervical spine injury in all the patients was deemed unstable and in need of surgical stabilization. Spinal cord injury was present in one-half of the patients studied. Vertebral artery injury was identified angiographically in 12 patients (46%). Occlusion of the vertebral a

The symphysis pubis is a nonsynovial amphiarthrodial joint that is situated at the confluence of the two pubic bones. A thick intrapubic fibrocartilaginous disc is sandwiched between thin layers of hyaline cartilage. The inferior pubic ligament provides most of the joint's stability. Anatomic sections demonstrate a symphysis by the end of the second month of gestation. Thick cartilaginous end-plates are present at birth but become thin by the time of skeletal maturity. Congenital diseases resulting in failure of symphysis formation include exstrophy of the bladder and cleidocranial dysostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Nonosteoporotic burst vertebral fracture could commonly be treated with conservative or surgical approach. Currently, decision-making process is based on thoracolumbar (TL) AO spine severity injury score. However, some factors could affect posttraumatic kyphosis (PTK) and could be taken into account. The aim of the present study is to identify if axial and sagittal fracture shape and initial kyphosis are the risk factors for PTK.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive patients treated between 2016 and 2017 for TL vertebral fracture with conservative treatment were retrospectivel

In this paper, super-gravity solidification and cold-rolling were utilized to obtain Al-14.5Si alloys. The influence of annealing time on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-14.5Si alloys was investigated. Our results indicated that high elongation was achieved by super-gravity solidification due to the submicron eutectic Si, making it possible to undertake the conventional cold-rolling. The yield strength (~214 ± 11 MPa) was significantly enhanced (~68.5%) after cold-rolling mainly due to high dislocation density. The coarsening of eutectic Si could be observed during annealing, wh

Isolated lesion of the axillary (or circumflex) nerve is infrequent, this is usually associated with a brachial plexus injury. In our institution, in a period comprised between the years 2015-2017, a frequency of only 0.4% of this injury has been observed. Clinical case: Male patient of 31 years of age, with trauma in the right shoulder, caused by fall of his own height in work accident. The admission graph of the right shoulder shows anterior inferior dislocation of the glenohumeral joint, associated with a greater tubercle fracture. He underwent surgery, with closed reduction of the glenohum

Pediatric blunt scrotal trauma is most often the consequence of sports injury and presents a diagnostic challenge because swelling and pain make a scrotal physical exam difficult. US with color flow and duplex Doppler is the first-line imaging modality with the goal of accurate and timely diagnosis of injury requiring surgery to preserve fertility and hormonal function. US imaging findings following blunt scrotal trauma include hydrocele, hematocele, testicular hematoma, testicular fracture, testicular rupture, compromised perfusion/testicular torsion and testicular dislocation. Importantly, s

In any cervical spine trauma involving dislocation of the facet joints or transverse foramen, a concomitant injury of the vertebral arteries must be excluded. Early diagnosis of an arterial occlusion is important because therapeutic intervention can prevent further complications, such as irreversible vertebrobasilar ischemia. Conservative and surgical treatment strategies are chosen depending on patient symptoms, fracture morphology, and grade of vascular injury. The benefit of anticoagulant medication after blunt injuries of the vertebral arteries in preventing thromboembolic events remains a

In this report, we discuss a case of a 14-month-old male presenting in the emergency department with refusal to bear weight on his left leg. Plain radiographic studies revealed no evidence of effusion, fracture, or dislocation. Laboratory studies were significant for an elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein. Further studies included unremarkable ultrasound of the left hip and normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both hips. An incidental finding on MRI was a left inguinal mass concerning an incarcerated hernia. Ultrasound of this mass demo

Charcot neuroarthropathy is often a devastating diabetic foot complication that poses a great risk for limb loss and can have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life in the presence of multiple existing comorbidities. It is a progressive and debilitating condition characterized by joint dislocation, pathologic fracture(s), and extensive destruction of the foot or ankle architecture secondary to dense peripheral neuropathy. This pathologic process can be idiopathic, secondary to acute trauma or previous surgery, or attributable to repetitive "microinjury." Once the Charcot process h
