Development and testing of Schisto and Ladders™, an innovative health educational game for control of schistosomiasis in schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a public health problem in many regions of the world, including Nigeria. Current control strategy involves mass drug administration with praziquantel to the endemic population. To complement and sustain on-going preventive chemotherapy, we developed a health educational game named Schisto and Ladders™ and tested its potential for the control of schistosomiasis among schoolchildren living in Imala-Odo, a highly endemic community near Abeokuta, Nigeria. METHODS: One hundred school children were randomly selected and divided into intervention and control group

Which information on women's issues in epilepsy does a community pharmacist need to know? A Delphi consensus study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and achieve consensus on a core list of important knowledge items that community pharmacists should know on women's issues in epilepsy. METHODS: This was a consensual study using a modified Delphi technique. Knowledge items were collected from the literature and from nine key contacts who were interviewed on their views on what information community pharmacists should have on women's issues in epilepsy. More knowledge items were suggested by five researchers with interest in women's issues who were contacted to rate and comment on the knowledge

Comparing knowledge and self-reported hand hygiene practices with direct observation among Iranian hospital nurses.

We compared knowledge and self-reported hand hygiene practices with direct observations among Shiraz Nemazee Hospital nurses. Overall hand hygiene compliance was low (39.6%). Use and appreciation for alcohol-based handrubs were suboptimal. Some reluctance was due to religious concerns. Most nurses self-reported performing proper hand hygiene more than 75% of the time, whereas direct observation indicated much lower levels of compliance. It appears that additional training and improved monitoring are needed.

Relationship between self-efficacy and patient knowledge on adherence to oral contraceptives using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8).

BACKGROUND: Preconception care, including family planning, is a vital component of healthcare for women of reproductive age. An average female spends the majority of her reproductive life trying to prevent a pregnancy. In order to prevent unintended pregnancy, women often rely on the use of hormonal contraceptives. In the United States, the majority of hormonal contraceptive users are prescribed oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). Reduced adherence to OCPs decreases their ability to prevent pregnancy. The study aimed to measure OCP adherence among female college students, and explore the relation

Awareness of cord blood collection and the impact on banking.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an important source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation especially in minority populations with limited chances of finding a histocompatible volunteer donor in the registry. UCB has the advantages of early availability, successful outcomes despite some histocompatibility mismatch, and low incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease. Public cord blood banks that disseminate UCB products for transplant depend on voluntary donation at participating hospitals and obstetrical providers for collection. PROCEDURE: Using survey questionnaires,

Neuropsychiatry: Towards a Philosophy of Praxis.

Neuropsychiatry is a specialized clinical, academic and scientific discipline with its field located in the borderland territory between neurology and psychiatry. In this article, we approach the theoretical definition of neuropsychiatry, and in order to address the practical aspects of the discipline, we describe the profile of a neuropsychiatric liaison service in the setting of a large hospital for neurological diseases in a middle-income country. An audit of consecutive in-patients requiring neuropsychiatric assessment at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico is re

Announcement: National Birth Defects Prevention Month and Folic Acid Awareness Week - January 2017.

The Zika virus disease outbreak has led to renewed focus on how some birth defects are caused by infection during pregnancy. "Prevent Infections for Baby's Protection" is the theme of January 2017's National Birth Defects Prevention Month. Birth defects are common, costly, and critical, and they affect one in 33 U.S. babies annually (1). Not all birth defects can be prevented, but women can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by reducing their risk for getting an infection during pregnancy.

An assessment of food safety information provision for UK chemotherapy patients to reduce the risk of foodborne infection.

OBJECTIVES: Given the increased risk of foodborne infection to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment, and the risk of listeriosis reportedly five-times greater to this immunocompromised patient group, there is a need to ensure the implementation of domestic food safety practices among chemotherapy patients and their family caregivers. However, information regarding the adequacy of resources to inform and enable patients to implement domestic food safety practices to reduce the risk of foodborne infection is limited. Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the provision of food sa

[ASSESSMENT OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES OF NURSES ON THE SKIN CONDITION AND TREATMENT OF DAMAGE].

Practical experience and numerous studies have shown that, after finishing their studies nursing graduates are not sure in their independent assessment and treatment of wounds. It appears that nursing education lacks narrowly specialized educational content in this area, practical skills and connection between graduates and experts who follow the standards and guidelines in the area of wound healing. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge through tests and attitudes of nurses/nursing graduates on the condition of the skin and damage treatment. In addition, the study was also aimed a

Fertility knowledge and the timing of first childbearing: a cross-sectional study in Japan.

Although fertility educational initiatives have increased in developed countries to prevent infertility and to broaden fertility choices, the relationship between knowledge and behaviour is still poorly understood. In order to investigate the association between fertility knowledge and timing of childbearing, we investigated male and female participants between 35 and 44 years of age who had children (n = 640) from an online survey conducted in Japan in 2013. The age at which participants actually gave birth to or fathered their first child was compared between those who were aware for at leas

Awareness and Environmental Exposures Related to Coccidioidomycosis Among Inmates at Two California Prisons, 2013.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is a major cause of illness in inmates in some California prisons. This article discusses an investigation conducted at two prisons to describe potential environmental exposures. The study did not identify modifiable risk factors; limiting the type or duration of outdoor activity in these prisons may not decrease coccidioidomycosis morbidity.

Successes and Challenges of HIV Mentoring in Malawi: The Mentee Perspective.

HIV clinical mentoring has been utilized for capacity building in Africa, but few formal program evaluations have explored mentee perspectives on these programs. EQUIP is a PEPFAR-USAID funded program in Malawi that has been providing HIV mentoring on clinical and health systems since 2010. We sought to understand the successes and challenges of EQUIP's mentorship program. From June-September 2014 we performed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with EQUIP mentees who had received mentoring for ≥ 1 year. Interview questions focused on program successes and challenges and were performed in Eng

Promotion of Cholera Awareness Among Households of Cholera Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial of the Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7 Days (CHoBI7) Intervention.

Previous studies have demonstrated that household contacts of cholera patients are highly susceptible to cholera infections for a 7-day period after the presentation of the index patient in the hospital. However, there is no standard of care to prevent cholera transmission in this high-risk population. Furthermore, there is limited information available on awareness of cholera transmission and prevention among cholera patients and their household contacts. To initiate a standard of care for this high-risk population, we developed the Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7-Days (CHoBI7), whi

Awareness of Prediabetes and Engagement in Diabetes Risk-Reducing Behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have demonstrated the benefit of weight loss and physical activity for diabetes prevention among those with prediabetes. Despite this evidence, only about half of people with prediabetes report engaging in these behaviors. One presumed barrier is low patient awareness of prediabetes. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of prediabetes awareness on the odds of engagement in diabetes risk-reduction behaviors. METHODS: A pooled cross-sectional analysis of adults from two cycles (2007-2008, 2009-2010) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was

A Cross-Sectional Study of Pesticide Use and Knowledge of Smallholder Potato Farmers in Uganda.

In response to increased pest and disease problems, potato farmers use pesticides, which could raise environmental and health concerns. This study sought to promote proper and safe pesticide-handling practices by providing data needed to guide pesticide regulation policy and training for extension staff and farmers. A household survey was conducted in three major potato-growing agroecological zones of Uganda. Two hundred and four potato farmers were interviewed about the type and source of pesticides they use in potato cultivation, the frequency of applications, the use of protective clothing,
