We tested the hypothesis that suppressive effects of endogenous opiate substances are involved in certain hypogonadotropic states. For this purpose, we studied gonadotropin secretion in idiopathic hypopituitarism (five children), constitutionally delayed adolescence (five boys), and Kallmann's syndrome (three men). A nomogram indicating the risk of having a fetus with open spina bifida in relation to a particular maternal serum and amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level is described. The nomogram is designed for counselling patients with borderline amniotic fluid AFP results, who on average are only marginally at risk of having a fetus with open spina bifida. Physicians who perform aeromedical evaluations are aware of the value conflicts inherent in being both a physician and a social agent. This paper examines some of the conflicts which occur when the psychiatrist acts as an aeromedical examiner. Five areas are examined: 1) the use by the psychiatrist of the authority delegated by the social system, 2) issues of confidentiality, 3) efforts of the social system to influence the psychiatrist's findings, 4) the requirements to make decisions in areas where scientific data is lacking, and 5) the physician's imperative to "do no harm" to his patient.

We tested Malan's method of constructing outcome criteria in brief dynamic psychotherapy by positing a core neurotic problem, psychodynamic outcome criteria, and psychodynamically oriented target criteria for 41 neurotic outpatients receiving either psychotherapy or behavioral therapy. We found that trained raters could assess psychodynamic problems and outcomes with high interrater reliability and agreement. In order to investigate the clinical characteristics of the immediate pigment darkening (IPD) reaction for normal healthy Caucasian individuals and its conceivable relation to age, sex, skin type and to the minimal erythema dose (MED), a standardized light testing procedure was used and 72 subjects were studied. A cohort of 574 black Adults (mean age 47 years with a range of 28-73 years) with sickle cell trait (haemoglobin AS) which had been age and sex matched with 1148 controls (haemoglobin AA) was monitored for 7 years. Five hundred twenty-five atopic patients were skin tested over a 12-mo period to several crude allergens with a puncture skin-testing technique utilizing a bifurcated needle originally developed for smallpox immunization. Methods are described for collecting constituents of mixed saliva, viz. parotid, submandibular, monor gland and sublingual saliva and gingival fluid. Literature is cited which showed that using these techniques, few antibiotics could be found in mixed saliva or its main components but all were detected in gingival fluid. Sclerosteosis is a unique autosomal recessive condition in which skeletal overgrowth is associated with syndactyly and digital malformation. Analysis of the course and clinical features in 25 affected individuals showed that the condition is progressive and potentially lethal. Facial palsy and deafness are common complications and raised intracranial pressure may develop. The clinical and radiographic stigmata of sclerosteosis permit differentiation from the other disorders of the "osteopetrosis" or "Albers-Schönberg disease" group, in which bony thickening and cranial nerve palsy occur.

Lactose intolerant populations are heterogeneous with respect to their milk-drinking habits. A gradation of lactase activity in the intolerant population may result in sufficient lactose hydrolysis to obviate symptoms and lead to continued milk consumption. Blood samples were collected on several occasions from Sprague-Dawley-derived rats by means of cardiac puncture at 8 h intervals over a 24 h period.
