Pancreatic enzyme therapy may be beneficial to all patients with chronic pancreatitis, even those in whom the condition is very mild. The goal of enzyme therapy should be to restore normal gastrointestinal physiology as completely as possible. Monitoring of body weight is recommended as the main measure of treatment efficacy. Most pancreatic enzyme preparations presently employed are porcine in origin and must meet certain standards of quality for human consumption. Patent filarial infection has been correlated with a profound suppression of humoral and cellular responses to filarial antigens. Prelingual profound deafness typically results in aberrant or unintelligible speech production. For approximately 70 years, researchers and engineers have attempted, with little success, to provide electronic aids for speech training. Recent computer and signal processing technology has provided the impetus for several groups to implement new speech training aids. Following a review of deaf speech characteristics, several current computer-based aids are described. Included among those reviewed are two interrelated speech training aids which resulted from collaboration among the authors.

Hosts were depleted of individual cellular components to determine the effects of these manipulations on cellular defence mechanisms in acute and chronic pyelonephritis. In a clinical and cytogenetic survey of 39 individuals with Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome (PLWS) (23 males and 16 females ranging in age from 2 weeks to 39 years), an interstitial deletion of chromosome 15 (breakpoints q11 and q13) was identified in 21 cases and apparently normal chromosomes in the remainder. We tested the hypothesis that suppressive effects of endogenous opiate substances are involved in certain hypogonadotropic states. For this purpose, we studied gonadotropin secretion in idiopathic hypopituitarism (five children), constitutionally delayed adolescence (five boys), and Kallmann's syndrome (three men). A nomogram indicating the risk of having a fetus with open spina bifida in relation to a particular maternal serum and amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level is described. The nomogram is designed for counselling patients with borderline amniotic fluid AFP results, who on average are only marginally at risk of having a fetus with open spina bifida. Physicians who perform aeromedical evaluations are aware of the value conflicts inherent in being both a physician and a social agent. This paper examines some of the conflicts which occur when the psychiatrist acts as an aeromedical examiner. Five areas are examined: 1) the use by the psychiatrist of the authority delegated by the social system, 2) issues of confidentiality, 3) efforts of the social system to influence the psychiatrist's findings, 4) the requirements to make decisions in areas where scientific data is lacking, and 5) the physician's imperative to "do no harm" to his patient.

We tested Malan's method of constructing outcome criteria in brief dynamic psychotherapy by positing a core neurotic problem, psychodynamic outcome criteria, and psychodynamically oriented target criteria for 41 neurotic outpatients receiving either psychotherapy or behavioral therapy. We found that trained raters could assess psychodynamic problems and outcomes with high interrater reliability and agreement. Using these measures with behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy patients, we found that the psychodynamic ratings could be extended to patients not treated psychodynamically
