BACKGROUND: Several changes have occurred in the presentation and course of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS since the introduction of HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). In some individuals who take HAART, retinitis is kept under control even after the discontinuation of anti-CMV therapy. However, many of these patients develop intraocular inflammation. Hairy cell Leukaemia (HCL) is a rare chronic lymphoid hemoproliferation. Few studies have been carried out in this area in sub-Saharan Africa. Between January 1993 and December 1999, 10 cases (6 men and 4 women, average age: 43.3) of HCL were registered in the haematology service of the University hospital Centre of Brazzaville (UHCB). Data from all parts of the world show a rising incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma. The latter is one of the most difficult malignancies to treat. OBJECTIVES: To study the factors determining new recurrences in patients with frequently recurring superficial bladder tumors.
METHODS: Of all 205 eligible patients, each received 5 weekly intravesical instillations of mitomycin C (MMC), with the first instillation given perioperatively. This was followed, according to randomization, by BCG instillations alone or by alternating instillations of interferon-alpha and BCG monthly for up to 1 year. Impact of 12 variables on time to first recurrence was retrospectively studied with the Cox multiple hazards regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction. Clinical observations suggest heightened susceptibility during viral infections, yet the mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, we show that both active and passive IgG-mediated anaphylaxis were exacerbated in the setting of acute viral infection.
