Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni and Fe) in surface sediments from nine sites in western Xiamen Bay and its vicinity were studied in order to understand current metal contamination due to urbanization and economic development in Xiamen, China. The presence of a foreign body in the urinary tract may serve as a nidus for stone formation. A 40-year-old male was found on CT scan to have a 2.4 cm stone in his Indiana pouch urinary diversion. As the stone was fragmented during endoscopic lithotripsy, a metallic round object was visualized, which was subsequently established to be a metallic ball bearing. The traditional endoscopic management of bile leaks involves placement of plastic endoprostheses. The success rate for closure of simple leaks (cystic duct, Luschka's duct) with this approach is high. We describe 3 patients with complex biliary leaks of the gallbladder bed that were successfully closed by using transpapillary placement of covered self-expandable biliary stents. The stents were endoscopically removed after closure of the leak. All 3 patients had previously undergone open subtotal cholecystectomy for severe acute cholecystitis when complete cholecystectomy could not be performed

We described, for the first time, the metal-enhanced fluorescence from the CdTe nanocrystals spin coated on silver island films (SIFs). CdTe nanocrystals show approximately 5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity, 3-fold decrease in lifetimes, and reduction in blinking on SIF surfaces that can be observed by ensemble and single-molecule fluorescence studies. Wet method was employed to the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater, and Zn(x)Fe(3-x)O(4), Ni(x)Fe(3-x)O(4) and Cr(x)Fe(3-x)O(4) (0<x<1) were synthesized.
