The large mineral deposits at the macroscopically occluded fissure was investigated using a high-resolution electron microscope. The large polygonal crystals at the bottom third of the fissure consisting of single crystals were mainly whitlockite. The unusual occurrence of skeletal muscle in the pineal gland of the bat Rhinopoma microphyllum is described. Individual muscle fibres were centrally placed and were incompletely encapsulated by a labyrinthine network of widened spaces filled with electron-dense material. The 2.4 micron long sarcomeres consisted of well developed A, I, H, M, and Z bands. A few myofibrils were oriented transversely within the same fibre. T system components, mitochondria and glycogen appeared normally distributed. Unmyelinated nerve bundles impinged upon the fibre but neuromuscular junctions were not observed.

Pinealocytes are not only the principal cellular components of the pineal gland, but they are also the principal synthetic machinery of this enigmatical gland with highly diverse and often questionable empyreal roles assigned to it. A case of lichen planus pemphigoides is described in which bullae and erosions affected the areas of lichen planus only. The diagnosis was confirmed by the finding of linear C3 and IgG deposition in the basement membrane zone (BMZ) of perilesional skin. Indirect immunofluorescence revealed circulating IgG anti-BMZ antibodies and a lamina lucida split was demonstrated by electron microscopy. This case challenges the clinical dogma that the occurrence of bullae on normal-appearing skin is essential for the diagnosis of lichen planus pemphigoides.

An investigation by electron microscope was performed on the submandibular gland of unweaned cats for studying its morphology and carbohydrate histochemistry. The cytoarchitecture was comparable with that of adult animals with the exception of the degree of membrane merging in both demilunar and acinar cell secretory granules. Conversely, the submandibular gland of unweaned cats showed a peculiar HID-TCH-SP reactivity at acinar cell level.

The ocular histopathology of type I mucopolysaccharidosis was studied with histochemical, ultrahistochemical, and ultrastructural techniques. The latter method showed extensive intracellular accumulation of fibrillogranular vacuoles in virtually every ocular tissue. Ultra-histochemistry proved that the fibrillogranular material was acid mucopolysaccharide. We analyzed the structural and functional relationship between lens sutures and lens optical quality (focal length variability) by correlative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser scan analysis. Eleven unilateral cryptorchid stallions, two to three years old, were castrated at Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Five of these cryptorchid cases were abdominal and the rest were inguinal. This study was initiated to document the differences between the abdominal and inguinal equine cryptorchid testes. Specimens were obtained from the abepididymal side of each cryptorchid testes and processed for light and electron microscopic study. The cryptorchid testes were smaller than the scrotal testes, with the abdominal testes being one-fourth the size of the scrotal testes.
