To evaluate the diagnostic utility of MR and CT in neurodegenerative diseases of childhood, we examined 63 children (MR in 44, CT in 53) car … elps distinguish children with neurodegenerative diseases from those with nonprogressive idiopathic movement disorders. The most common abnormalities included signal alterations (MR) or decreased attenuation (CT) of the basal ganglia and cerebral white matter, as well as local or generalized brain atrophy. Although considerable overlap was present, the findings show …

Many anorexic and bulimic patients induce vomiting by inserting their fingers in the oral cavity. We hypothesized that finger pressure could lead to tooth movement, eventually resulting in the development of orthodontic abnormalities, particularly open-bite. Twenty-four females with eating disorders and 24 matched controls underwent orthodontic examination and completed a dental questionnaire. Orthodontic abnormalities were more commonly found in the eating disorder group and open-bite was the most common abnormality seen. The presence of open-bite or other orthodontic abnormality was not asso

INTRODUCTION: Chorea is a rare movement disorder in the context of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although basal ganglia thrombosis, autoimmune injury or neuronal direct lesion have been proposed as possible explanations, its mechanism is still unknown. It is important to understand its pathogenesis so that the best treatments can be identified.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female adolescent with choreoathetoid movements of the trunk and four limbs, slurred speech, hypophonia and orofacial dyskinesia with 14 days of evolution. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed recent subcorti

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the blood pressure increase observed during menopausal transition is affected by sleep-disordered breathing and the menopause itself. Further, we aimed to find new sleep-disordered breathing related markers that would predict the development of hypertension. Sixty-four community-dwelling premenopausal women aged 45-47 years were studied. Polysomnography, serum follicle stimulating hormone, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and a physical examination were performed at baseline and again after 10 years of follow-up. Indices for sleep apnea/hypopnea

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a serious, nonrhythmic and iatrogenic movement disorder, and is a common comorbidity in patients with schizophrenia (SZ). The main goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence, clinical correlates, and risk factors of TD in Chinese patients with chronic SZ, which has not been fully studied. This study adopted a cross-sectional design. A total of 901 Chinese inpatients with SZ were recruited between 2008 and 2011. We used the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) to measure the severity of TD, and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used

BACKGROUND: In Huntington's disease there is evidence of structural damage in the motor system, but it is still unclear how to link this to the behavioral disorder of movement. One feature of choreic movement is variable timing and coordination between sequences of actions. We postulate this results from desynchronization of neural activity in cortical motor areas.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to explore the ability to synchronize activity in a motor network using transcranial magnetic stimulation and to relate this to timing of motor performance.
METHODS: We examined synchron

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the pediatric population at an increased risk of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD). Polysomnographic data from the Caffeine for Apnea of Prematurity-Sleep (CAPS) study showed a high prevalence of elevated periodic limb movement index (PLMI) in a cohort of ex-preterm children, but the clinical importance of this finding, such as association with RLS, is unknown. We hypothesized that ex-preterm children would have a high prevalence of RLS and PLMD.
METHODS: Ex-preterm children enrolled in CAPS, now aged 5-12 years, comple

BACKGROUND: Oculomotor disturbances and nystagmus are seen in many diseases of the nervous system, the vestibular apparatus, and the eyes, as well as in toxic and metabolic disorders. They often indicate a specific underlying cause. The key to diagnosis is systematic clinical examination of the patient's eye movements. This review deals mainly with central oculomotor disturbances, i.e., those involving smooth pursuit, saccades, gaze-holding, and central types of nystagmus.
METHODS: We searched the current literature for relevant publications on the diagnosis and treatment of oculomotor distur

Costeff Syndrome, which is caused by mutations in the OPTIC ATROPHY 3 (OPA3) gene, is an early-onset syndrome characterized by urinary excretion of 3-methylglutaconic acid (MGC), optic atrophy and movement disorders, including ataxia and extrapyramidal dysfunction. The OPA3 protein is enriched in the inner mitochondrial membrane and has mitochondrial targeting signals, but a requirement for mitochondrial localization has not been demonstrated. We find zebrafish opa3 mRNA to be expressed in the optic nerve and retinal layers, the counterparts of which in humans have high mitochondrial activity.…

The dopamine transporter (DAT) operates via facilitated diffusion, harnessing an inward Na(+) gradient to drive dopamine from the extracellular synaptic cleft to the neuron interior. The DAT is relevant to central nervous system disorders such as Parkinson disease and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and is the primary site of action for the abused psychostimulants cocaine and amphetamines. Crystallization of a DAT homolog, the bacterial leucine transporter LeuT, provided the first reliable 3-D DAT template. Here, the LeuT crystal structure and the DAT molecular model have been combine

The occurrence and irreversibility of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a motor disorder of the orofacial region, resulting from chronic neuroleptic treatment has been considered a major clinical issue in the treatment of schizophrenia. The molecular mechanism underlying the pathophysiology of TD is not completely known. Several animal studies have demonstrated an enhancement of oxidative damage and increased glutamatergic transmission after chronic administration of neuroleptics. The present study investigated the effect of rutin, an antioxidant in haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia by using dif

Around 1900 a psychiatric reform movement propagated the foundation of sanatoriums for the lower middle class in Germany. These sanatoriums were supposed to cure patients suffering from neurasthenia and associated disorders. Many private sanatoriums existed for curing neurasthenia. Visiting them was a luxury beyond most of the patients' means. Therefore, the so called "Volksnervenheilstätten"-movement aimed at providing sanatorium care for free or at very low costs. One of the first sanatoriums that arose from this movement was the "Rasemühle" close to Goettingen. It was founded in 1903. As a

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients with comorbid panic disorder (PD) may express additive symptoms of central fear system disturbance. They endorse elevated levels of sleep and nightmare disturbance [Leskin GA, et al., J Psychiatr Res 2002;36:449-452], and demonstrate movement suppression during laboratory sleep [Woodward SH, et al., Sleep 2002;25:681-688]. We estimated respiratory rate and rate variability separately for rapid-eye movement (REM) and non-rapid-eye movement (NREM) sleep. Subjects were 49 Vietnam combat-related PTSD inpatients (11 with comorbid PD and 38 without) and
