[Multifocal gliomas in cerebral hemisphere associated with von Recklinghausen's disease: case report].

A case of intracerebral multifocal gliomas with von Recklinghausen's disease is reported. A 12-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital with an episode of convulsive attacks which were uncontrolled by anticonvulsants. CT scan and MRI revealed small well circumscribed tumors in the left frontal cortex and left parietal subcortex. Both of the tumors revealed low density in plain CT scan and low intensity in T1 weighted MRI. The vascularity of these tumors was poor in cerebral angiography. In other words these tumors were of a similar nature. The histology of the frontal tumor, which was totally

Undiagnosed phaeochromocytoma in the perioperative period. Case reports.

Phaeochromocytomas appear as frequently as one in 1000-2000 patients. Release of catecholamines may be triggered by events in the perioperative period. Patients whose phaeochromocytomas are diagnosed in this period, have a mortality of about 80%. Three patients with perioperative debut of symptoms of a phaeochromocytoma are presented. A possible drug-induced release of catecholamines from the tumour is suggested for two of the patients. The first symptoms of a phaeochromocytoma may be arrhythmias and shock, which favours the use of adrenergic blockade prior to elective removal of phaeochromocy

Cutaneous malignant melanoma in association with other skin cancers.

A case-control study of 232 cases of cutaneous malignant melanoma and 232 matched controls was performed to assess the association of the disease with nonmelanotic skin tumors--basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and solar keratoses. There was a fourfold increase in risk of melanoma of all types when actinic tumors were present on the face. The risk was not restricted to the lentigo malignant melanoma class as might be expected but was significantly raised for superficial spreading melanoma and nodular melanoma as well (relative risk, 2.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-7.2). This r

A clinicopathologic study of 92 cases of granulosa cell tumor of the ovary with special reference to the factors influencing prognosis.

Ninety-two cases of granulosa cell tumor of the ovary have been studied. The clinical and pathologic data from this group were similar to that obtained in previous series. Because of the long natural history of many granulosa cell tumors, crude death rates over a relatively short period give little indication of the true malignant potential of these neoplasms and hence corrected survival rates were calculated; these show that, if no patient died from any other disease, approximately half of the women with this neoplasm would die, as a result of the tumor, within 20 years. Factors indicating a

The clinical challenge of MEN1 phenocopies: insights from a multicentric national retrospective study.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by MEN1 gene mutations, typically involving primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs), and/or pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs). However, 10-30% of patients with MEN1-like features lack identifiable MEN1 mutations and are classified as phenocopies. This retrospective multicenter study, conducted across 10 Italian referral centers, aimed to characterize the main clinical features of phenocopies. Among 240 patients evaluated for suspected MEN1 over five years, 175 (mea

A case of intravascular large B-cell lymphoma in the left adrenal and another tumor in the right adrenal detected by (18)F-FDG PET/CT.

OBJECTIVE: Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare but fatal malignancy with a rapid onset, and presenting as an aggressive variant of diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Fluoro-18-fluorine positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG PET/CT) is reported to be highly sensitive in diagnosing lymphoma. Herein, we present our (18)F-FDG PET/CT findings at an early case of IVLBCL in bilateral adrenals. The patient had no symptoms. Positron emission tomography and CT images showed irregular density on bilateral adrenals indicating malignant tumor and also anoth

Successful treatment of multiple hepatocellular adenomas with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation.

Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is one of the important complications of glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSD-Ia) because it can be transformed into hepatocellular carcinoma. Although surgical resection is a standard treatment of choice for solitary HCA, multiple HCAs in GSD-Ia patients present as therapeutic challenges for curative treatment. Therefore, treatment strategy according to malignant potential is important in management of HCAs in GSD-Ia. The authors present a case of histologically proven multiple HCAs without β-catenin mutations occurred in a GSD-Ia patient treated successfully wit

Schwannoma in neurofibromatosis type 1: a pitfall for detecting malignancy by metabolic imaging.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the development of multiple peripheral nerve sheath tumors, the majority of which are benign neurofibromas. However, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) occur with a 10 % lifetime risk in patients with NF1, often developing within a neurofibroma. When clinical suspicion for an MPNST arises, imaging with FDG PET and MRI is performed to characterize a peripheral tumor for potential malignancy. In this report, we describe a patient with NF-1 who had two peripheral tumors with similar features by PET, both s

Co-occurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma and primary lymphoma of the thyroid in a patient with long-standing Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer, whereas mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the thyroid gland is uncommon. Simultaneous occurrence of both disease entities is very rare. PATIENT FINDINGS: A 59-year-old man with known hypothyroidism from Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was seen for thyroid nodules. A thyroid ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous thyroid gland with two hypoechoic nodules, one in the right aspect of the isthmus measuring 2.0 cm×3.2 cm×1.7 cm and another one in the left lobe measuring 1.4 cm×1.3 cm×1.2 cm. Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip after allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been considered a curative treatment option for many hematological and non-hematological disorders. Despite the use of advanced methods of tissue typing and new therapies, graft versus host disease (GVHD) remains a major obstacle. Secondary malignancies are also among the most serious long-term complications after HSCT including leukemia, lymphomas, and to a lesser extent, solid tumors. The most commonly observed solid tumor is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report two cases of SCC of the lower lip diagnosed several years after HSC

Cancer family history characterization in an unselected cohort of 121 patients with uveal melanoma.

Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. The extent of the contribution of familial/hereditary predisposition to the development of uveal melanoma is largely unknown. Thus we sought to ascertain the frequency of cancers in patients with UM and their family members to identify the prevalence of hereditary/familial predisposition to cancer in these patients. An unselected series of 121 patients with UM seen in a university-based tertiary referral program were consented to the study. Cancer histories (site and age of diagnosis) were obtained for all first-

Multiple primary malignancies in Spanish patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: analysis of a hospital-based tumor registry.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Little is known about the etiological associations and clinical features of extrahepatic primary malignant (EHPM) neoplasms in subjects with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this study was to characterize this phenomenon in a consecutive series of Spanish patients in order to define its natural history and influence on survival. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 245 patients with HCC during the period 1999-2003 was performed. Subjects identified with a second primary malignancy elsewhere constituted the EHPM group and were compared to patients with HCC alone.

Diffuse hemangiomatosis with predominant central nervous system involvement.

Diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis presents with multiple, progressive, rapidly growing cutaneous hemangiomas associated with widespread visceral hemangiomas in the liver, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, brain, and meninges. Described here is a case of diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis with predominant central nervous system involvement. The early appearance of central nervous system lesions on imaging can overlap with that of cavernous malformations, confounding diagnosis; however, rapid growth, response to steroids, cystic appearance with sedimentation levels of the mature lesions, and involveme

Bilateral vocal cord palsy due to brain-stem cavernoma--a diagnostic dilemma!

Vocal cord palsy may result from varied causes. However, cord palsy resulting from a brain-stem cavernoma has never been reported. We report a patient with vocal cord palsy in a 30-year-old male resulting from the brain-stem lesion. The patient became symptomatic each time the lesion bled and improved gradually when the bleeding resolved. Repeated insults on the brain-stem produced permanent cord palsy. Although a rare presentation, brain-stem cavernoma may be considered in the aetiology of cord palsy.

Expression of cytokeratin markers, ER-alpha, PR, HER-2/neu, and EGFR in pure ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and DCIS with co-existing invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast.

Previously, we showed that pure ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast can be divided into 3 subtypes (luminal, basal/stem, and null) based on the expression of 5 cytokeratin (CK) markers: CK5/6, CK14, CK17 (stem/basal), and CK8, CK18 (luminal). The distributions of CK subtypes were associated with nuclear grade and differential expression of estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha), progesterone receptor (PR), HER-2/neu, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). In this study, we further explore the expression patterns of CK markers, ER-alpha, PR, HER-2/neu, and EGFR by immunohistochemica

Rapid mutation screening for HRPT2 and MEN1 mutations associated with familial and sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism.

Familial hyperparathyroidism, a disease of the parathyroid glands, may occur in conjunction with pituitary and pancreatic tumors (multiple endocrine neoplasia type I), kidney and bone tumors (hyperparathyroidism jaw tumor syndrome), or alone (familial isolated hyperparathyroidism). This study describes the development and validation of rapid scanning for mutations in two tumor suppressor genes linked to familial hyperparathyroidism-MEN1 and HRPT2. Denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography mutation scanning for MEN1 was performed using a set of 10 amplicons covering the nine coding exon

No effect on adenoma formation in Min mice after moderate amount of flaxseed.

BACKGROUND & AIM: The mammalian lignan enterolactone (ENL) produced from plant lignans, e. g. secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG), may protect against various cancers in humans. The present work aims to evaluate the effect of flaxseed on tumour formation in multiple intestinal neoplasia (Min) mice, a model for colon tumorigenesis. DESIGN: Male and female Min mice were fed either with a non-fibre control diet or the same diet supplemented with 0.5 % (w/w) defatted flaxseed meal. Conversion of SDG to the mammalian lignans enterodiol (END) and ENL in the gut, and plasma ENL, were measured by

Double lung cancer combined with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. A case report.

A 68-year-old woman was admitted because of two abnormal lung shadows, which later proved to be differentiated double cancer. Preoperative hematology tests showed a low platelet count and the result of bone marrow aspiration was compatible with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). A normal platelet count was once obtained by preoperative percutaneous partial splenic arterial embolization (PSE). However, as there was a tendency for the platelet count to decrease just before surgery, one shot high-dose immunoglobulin (Ig) was administered, which is thought to have a short term effect. The
