Individualized Functional Brain System Topologies and Major Depression: Relationships Among Patch Sizes and Clinical Profiles and Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies of major depression have typically been conducted using group-level approaches. However, given interindividual differences in brain systems, there is a need for individualized approaches to brain systems mapping and putative links toward diagnosis, symptoms, and behavior. METHODS: We used an iterative parcellation approach to map individualized brain systems in 328 participants from a multisite, placebo-controlled clinical trial. We hypothesized that participants with depression would show abnormalities in salience, control, default, and affective systems, whi

Using Cognitive-Motor Dual-Tasks and Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Characterize Older Adults with and without Subjective Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to individuals who report persistent cognitive deficits but perform normally on neuropsychological tests. Performance may be facilitated by increased prefrontal cortex activation, known as neural compensation, and could be used to differentiate between older adults with and without SCD. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional pilot study measured changes in the hemodynamic response (ΔHbO2) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as well as cognitive and motor performance during fine and gross motor dual-tasks in older adults with and w

Using an appetitive operant conditioning paradigm to screen rats for tinnitus induced by intense sound exposure: Experimental considerations and interpretation.

In an effort to help elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying tinnitus in humans, researchers have often relied on animal models; a preclinical approach which ultimately required that behavioral paradigms be designed to reliably screen animals for tinnitus. Previously, we developed a two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) paradigm for rats that allowed for the simultaneous recording of neural activity at the very moments when they were reporting the presence/absence of tinnitus. Because we first validated our paradigm in rats experiencing transient tinnitus following a high-dose of sodium sali

Nucleus accumbens: a systematic review of neural circuitry and clinical studies in healthy and pathological states.

OBJECTIVE: The nucleus accumbens (NAcc) of the ventral striatum is critically involved in goal- and reward-based behavior. Structural and functional abnormalities of the NAcc or its associated neural systems are involved in neurological and psychiatric disorders. Studies of neural circuitry have shed light on the subtleties of the structural and functional derangements of the NAcc across various diseases. In this systematic review, the authors sought to identify human studies involving the NAcc and provide a synthesis of the literature on the known circuity of the NAcc in healthy and diseased

Kinematic effects of a pedicle-lengthening osteotomy for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis.

OBJECT: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) may lead to disabling neurogenic symptoms and has traditionally been treated using open laminectomy. A new technique for correcting LSS involves lengthening the lumbar pedicles through bilateral percutaneous pedicle osteotomies. In this paper, the authors' goal was to evaluate the changes in spinal canal dimensions and kinematic behavior after pedicle-lengthening osteotomies. METHODS: The kinematic behavior of 8 cadaveric lumbar segments was evaluated intact and after bilateral pedicle-lengthening osteotomies at the L-4, L-5, and L-4 and L-5 levels. Testin

From behavioral profiles to neural scaffolds: cortico-striatal integrity predicts longitudinal stability and transition in psychological adaptability during early adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Psychological adaptability hinges on the dynamic balance between cognitive regulation (self-control) and emotional reactivity (impulsivity, reward/punishment sensitivity). However, traditional variable-centered approaches often fail to capture how these traits holistically co-occur, and the neural architectures predicting their longitudinal transitions in early adulthood remain under-explored. METHODS: This longitudinal study (N = 1,229 baseline; N = 432 2-year follow-up) integrated a person-centered behavioral approach with resting-state fMRI. We employed Latent Profile Analysis

Cognitive deficits linked to intrinsic timescales and gray matter volume abnormalities in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is associated with cognitive deficits and neural abnormalities, yet how temporal properties of regional brain activity align with structural changes across development remains unclear. We integrated intrinsic neural timescale (INT) with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to explore whether intrinsic timescales disruptions co-localize with gray matter volume (GMV) alterations and relate to cognition in children with DMD. METHODS: Thirty-six children with DMD and 30 age-matched healthy controls underwent T1-weighted MRI and resting-state fMRI. INT and VBM

Biophysically informed large-scale circuit modeling reveals region-specific microscale dynamics in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Objective. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is frequently accompanied by hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and involves widespread alterations in brain structure and function. However, most neuroimaging studies rely on single-modality data and provide limited insight into the microscale neural mechanisms underlying these changes. The relationship between structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity also remains insufficiently understood. This study aims to integrate structural and functional data to investigate microscale neural dynamic alterations in TLE.Approach. A biophysically informed re

The Interaction Between the Central Nervous System and Dental Tissues: Hypothetical Dental Interoception Inferred From Skeletal Interoception.

BACKGROUND: The circuit of interoception, through which the nervous system monitors internal physiological states and maintains tissue homeostasis, has been well characterized in bone. However, whether a comparable interoceptive mechanism exists in the other mineralized tissue-teeth-remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: This review uses skeletal interoception as a comparative framework to examine whether analogous sensory-regulatory mechanisms may operate in dental tissues. We summarize the neuroanatomical basis of dental innervation, the peripheral cellular mechanisms by which the pulp-dentine comple
