Procedures and Protocols for Weight Assessment During Acute Illness in Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa: A National Survey.

BACKGROUND: Weight assessment is a key component of nursing care for individuals with the acute illness of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, there is little data to guide protocols and procedures regarding weight assessment. OBJECTIVE: To describe institutional practices regarding weight assessment of individuals during acute illness of AN. DESIGN: Treatment facilities ( N = 24) completed a survey about written protocols and procedures regarding weight assessment and disclosure of weight to patients. RESULTS: The majority of facilities ( n = 22; 92%) have written protocols for weight assessme

Neurologic Complications: Effects of Ipilimumab and Nivolumab Therapy in Patients With Metastatic Melanoma.

Checkpoint inhibitors are a form of immunotherapy that have revolutionized treatment for malignant melanoma, resulting in longer survival and better disease control. Multiple autoimmune disorders can occur with the use of checkpoint inhibitors, including severe, potentially fatal neurologic complications. Although neurologic complications are uncommon, their early recognition and treatment is required. The purpose of this article is to present information on neurologic complications of ipilimumab and nivolumab to inform nursing practice. Recommendations for evaluation and treatment of neurolog

Safe oxygen saturation targeting and monitoring in preterm infants: can we avoid hypoxia and hyperoxia?

UNLABELLED: Oxygen is a neonatal health hazard that should be avoided in clinical practice. In this review, an international team of neonatologists and nurses assessed oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) targeting in preterm infants and evaluated the potential weaknesses of randomised clinical trials. CONCLUSION: SpO2 of 85-89% can increase mortality and 91-95% can cause hyperoxia and ill effects. Neither of these ranges can be recommended, and wider intermediate targets, such as 87-94% or 88-94%, may be safer.

Common biochemical markers for diagnosing heart disease.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) and clinical features alone are used to diagnose almost 75 per cent of patients presenting with an acute myocardial infarction (MI). In these cases elevated cardiac enzyme levels merely confirm the diagnosis. However, when the clinical picture is less characteristic and the ECG is normal or has nonspecific changes, verification may rely on the detection of enzyme elevation. This article outlines the common biochemical markers used to assess for myocardial damage and the implications for nursing practice.

The false localizing signs of increased intracranial pressure.

False localizing signs, although rare, indicate significant increased intracranial pressure with tissue shift, has occurred. A review of the historical perspective highlights the discovery of these false localizing signs, and exploration of the anatomic and physiologic causes provides important insight for neuroscience nurses. Critical thinking skills, and a world view paradigm for clinical practice are developed upon an in-depth understanding of neurologic dysfunction. Collaborative relationships are enhanced by an interdisciplinary approach to assessment of the critically ill neuroscience pa

Understanding emotional and practical challenges of initiating oxygen therapy in pulmonary fibrosis: insights from a patient-centered survey.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) causes respiratory insufficiency due to progressive lung scarring and impaired gas exchange. Although no curative treatment exists, pharmacological therapies may slow progression, while oxygen therapy alleviates hypoxemia, improves functional capacity, and enhances well-being. This study explored psychosocial and practical barriers to oxygen initiation, and their prevalence, among patients with PF. METHODS : We conducted a cross-sectional mixed-method survey in 2024, following the Consensus-Based Checklist for Reporting of Survey Studies (CROSS), co-develope

Etiquette of the antibiotic decision-making process for surgical prophylaxis in Ethiopia: a triangulated ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic antibiotics reduce surgery-associated infections and healthcare costs. While quantitative methods have been widely used to evaluate antibiotic use practices in surgical wards, they fall short of fully capturing the intricacies of antibiotic decision-making in these settings. Qualitative methods can bridge this gap by delving into the often-overlooked healthcare customs that shape antibiotic prescribing practices. AIM: This study aimed to explore the etiquette of the antibiotic decision-making process of surgical prophylaxis antibiotic use at Tikur Anbessa Specialized

Attachment insecurity, professional quality of life, and perceived posttraumatic growth among hospital nurses.

BACKGROUND: Hospital nurses routinely manage emotionally demanding clinical work that may contribute to burnout and secondary traumatic stress, while also providing opportunities for meaning making processes, compassion satisfaction, and perceived posttraumatic growth. Attachment insecurity may shape how nurses regulate distress and engage with supportive relationships, but its associations with both negative and positive professional outcomes remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations among attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, professional quality of life, and perc

Evaluating Nursing Work Systems and Identifying Barriers for Robotic Technology Integration: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Robotic technology has the potential to assist nurses, but the complexity and unpredictability of health care environments cannot be replicated in a laboratory setting. Furthermore, there is a lack of experiential evidence that robotic technology will meaningfully impact nursing. Collaborative development of technology and real-world usability studies offers the ability to address problems early in the design process when functional changes can be implemented. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use an observational study and systematically evaluate the work system of inpa

Psychological Distress Among Nurse Practitioners After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, frontline health care workers have experienced significant stress due to concerns about their own infection risk, fear of transmitting the virus to their families, societal stigmatization, changes in work hours, and uncertainties regarding disease progression. However, the related studies in the literature focus predominantly on psychological distress among nurses, physicians, and administrative staff during the pandemic and its factors of influence, with few studies exploring this issue in nurses during the postpandemic period.

The effects of nursing interventions on anxiety and depression in infertile females undergoing assisted reproduction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have investigated the impact of nursing interventions on psychological factors such as anxiety and depression in infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, the results have been inconsistent, and the effectiveness of these nursing interventions on the physiological status of these patients varies. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to summarize and compare the outcomes of these studies across different types of nursing interventions. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of various nursi

Desperately seeking parenthood: neonatal nurses reflect on parental anguish.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore the ways in which neonatal nurses understand the experience of parents who have experienced infertility, conceived a baby via in vitro fertilisation and delivered an extremely premature infant. The chance of a poor long-term outcome for the baby is significant; therefore, parental anguish plays out in the neonatal intensive care. BACKGROUND: Current literature suggests that infertility is a significant issue for ageing women and many couples experience multiple cycles of invitro-fertilisation (IVF) treatment to achieve a pregnancy. Babies conceive

Prenatal office practices regarding infant feeding choices.

The objective of this study was to determine the obstetric care providers' roles in breast-feeding promotion during prenatal care. A questionnaire addressing breast-feeding issues was sent to family practitioners (FP), obstetric-gynecologists (OB/GYN), and nurse midwives (NM) in Iowa, USA. All NM, 97% of FP, and 85% of OB/GYN reported asking infant feeding preference-usually only at the first prenatal visit. NM (73%) were most likely to provide extensive breast-feeding counseling. OB/GYN (68%) and FP physicians (90%) reported doing their own breast-feeding counseling. Breast examinations targe
