An epidemiological study was performed on leishmaniasis in a newly established community in south-eastern Paraguay. 149 persons, of 172 inhabitants, were thoroughly examined by clinical, parasitological and immunological (leishmanin skin test) examinations. 88 of those examined (59%) were clinically positive for dermal and nasal (mucosal) lesions or dermal scars, while 74 (50%) were positive by the leishmanin test. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of photodynamic therapy utilizing aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate in vitro on several human malignant and normal cell types, with or without hyperthermia. A case of false positive I-131 MIBG imaging for detection of pheochromocytoma is presented. There was an area of increased tracer uptake in the left renal region that showed steadily reducing activity over a period of three days. This raised the suspicion of a dilated renal pelvis, which was later confirmed by Tc-99m DTPA imaging. It is advisable in cases of ambiguous I-131 MIBG imaging to use Tc-99m DTPA rather than Tc-99m DMSA for localizing the kidneys and renal pelvis.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disorder leading to progressive skeletal and cardiac myopathy. Elevated myocardial T1 values correlate with fibrosis in most disease processes, but DMD skeletal and cardiac histopathology is defined by fibrofatty replacement that may result in a decrease in T1 values, due to the low T1 of fat.
